EXTD=ns, Inc\n\nOriginally Released 1999\nRemastered Rhino CD Edition
EXTD=Released February 5, 2002\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Grateful Dead ta
EXTD=pe archivist Dick Latvala has not only picked the concerts in the
EXTD= Dick's Picks series, but also made editing decisions, and his ch
EXTD=oices on this four-CD set are liable to be controversial. The Dea
EXTD=d's three-night stand in Boston in the fall of 1973, shortly afte
EXTD=r the release of Wake Of The Flood produced what most Dead Heads
EXTD=consider a good show (11/30), an off-night, more for the audience
EXTD= than the band (12/01), and a great show (12/02), the last mainly
EXTD= because of a particularly experimental "Mind Left Body" jam in t
EXTD=he second set. Here, Latvala presents edited versions of the firs
EXTD=t and third nights (two CDs each), creating some interesting cont
EXTD=rasts since, for example, 11/30 begins with "Morning Dew" and 12/
EXTD=02 ends with it, and each show features a long "Playing In The Ba
EXTD=nd" and a performance of "Weather Report Suite" from Wake Of The
EXTD=Flood. The cuts are for the most part judicious, but some fans ma
EXTD=y question the consolidation of the shows. Still, at four discs,
EXTD=this is the longest Dick's Picks yet and may be testing the water
EXTD=s for even longer volumes that would be more complete. ~ William
EXTD=Ruhlmann\n \nAmazon.com Editorial Review\nOne of the odder collec
EXTD=tions in the Dick's Picks series, this four-disc set includes mos
EXTD=t of the music played on the first and last nights of a three-nig
EXTD=ht run at Boston Music Hall in late fall 1973. With Donna Godchau
EXTD=x off the road to give birth, the band was back down to a quintet
EXTD=, and they're mostly found here in a mellow and airy vibe. Many o
EXTD=f the tunes are taken at slower tempos than some fans may be used
EXTD= to--with the exception of "They Love Each Other," which is done
EXTD=here in a seldom-heard peppy style with additional verses that di
EXTD=dn't make the final cut. There's some duplication of material as
EXTD=well, though you can't argue with any of the performances. --Marc
EXTD= Greilsamer \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nI've heard it all bef
EXTD=ore, October 6, 2003 \nReviewer:    kireviewer (Sunnyvale, Ca Uni
EXTD=ted States)\nSince Jerry Garcia's death, there have been over 40
EXTD=live Grateful Dead albums released. Add to that, the live albums
EXTD=already released and you have about 60 albums to choose from. No
EXTD=two shows were exactly alike, but they did repeat songs from one
EXTD=show to the next. And for some songs, there was not a lot of vari
EXTD=ation in how they were played. One "Me and My Uncle" sounds prett
EXTD=y much like the next.\n\nThis CD consists of two complete concert
EXTD=s, played two days apart. The tour was in support of the Wake of
EXTD=The Dead album that was released just two months earlier. Morning
EXTD= Dew and the Weather Report Suite are repeated both nights. There
EXTD= isn't much difference on how these songs are played each night,
EXTD=so you do get some repeat here.\n\nThe band on this album is a st
EXTD=ripped down, five piece band. Donna Godcheaux is on maternity lea
EXTD=ve and Micky Hart is not with the band. The band has starker, sim
EXTD=pler sound. The Weather Report Suite reminds me of Willie Nelson'
EXTD=s Red Headed Stranger album. Wier even sounds like Nelson in a fe
EXTD=w spots.\n\nThis is the same band and tour that is also on Dick's
EXTD= Picks Volume 1 and 24. If buy all 3 Dick's Picks, you get 4 conc
EXTD=erts recorded within a 2 month span. Between them, all songs from
EXTD= the album Wake of the Flood get repeated at least twice. There i
EXTD=sn't much difference in any of these songs from night to night. \n
EXTD=\nI don't know why it is necessary to release whole concerts. It
EXTD=would have been better to release a greatest hits album from the
EXTD=tour, instead of 4 complete concerts. Also, it it necessary to in
EXTD=clude all of the talking in between tracks? I guess it gives you
EXTD=the feeling of "being there". \n\nAlso, why do we need 4 concerts
EXTD= from a two month period, when there are many other periods in th
EXTD=e Dead's history that still aren't covered. I have yet to see a c
EXTD=oncert CD featuring the real spacy, hour long Blues for Allah.\n\n
EXTD=The one thing this two concert set does show, is that the Dead co
EXTD=uld be a lot better on one night than the next. The second show i
EXTD=s much more interesting than the first, with a very nice Warf Rat
EXTD= and Playing in the Band.\n\nThere is nothing new on Volume 14 th
EXTD=at hasn't been heard on other Dead albums (except for the a nice
EXTD=five minute piece of the Jam, and the Beer Barrel Polka). There a
EXTD=re many, many other choices that are better than this. I would st
EXTD=art with the excellent So Many Roads. This is a boxset, done righ
EXTD=t. It features some of the best versions of each song. Next choic
EXTD=e would be Without A Net. It also features most of the songs from
EXTD= Wake Of the Flood, but they get a nice updated treatment.\n\nThi
EXTD=s isn't a bad album, it's just pointless. All the songs are avail
EXTD=able elsewhere, either done the same or much better. Each disc is
EXTD= over 70 minutes long and the sound quality is good, although the
EXTD= mix is bad in some places, especially on the second show. Wier's
EXTD= vocals are way out in front in some spots, and you get an ocassi
EXTD=onal guitar blast here and there. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\n
EXTD=a great collection from two nights, April 7, 2004 \nReviewer: B.
EXTD=J Lam "lamb@hallevans.com" (littleton, colorado United States) \n
EXTD=Many are dismissive of this Pick and I suggest that they could no
EXTD=t be more wrong. Yes, the music has an overall mellowness to it a
EXTD=nd is mostly laid back, but there is brilliance in the delivery a
EXTD=t every turn.\n\nFirst, the booklet notes explain that, incredibl
EXTD=y, the band's itinerary was confused, causing the band to almost
EXTD=miss its Nov. 30 show. As it was they showed up late for it! Thus
EXTD=, the first song here, Morning Dew, was a sort of sound check for
EXTD= the band. The entire first cd has lots of between song chatter,
EXTD=which I like, and by the time of Dire Wolf and Black Throated Win
EXTD=d (BTW), the hour is late, the band has a "what the hell" attitud
EXTD=e and the mellowness is contagious. I'm no fan of BTW and I think
EXTD= that this may be the best recording of it I've heard. The first
EXTD=set closes with PlayingITB and because Donna is on maternity leav
EXTD=e, it is a very enjoyable ending to cd one.\n\nCD two has the exc
EXTD=ellent Here Comes Sunshine and Eyes of the World, but here the so
EXTD=ngs, which at this time are very new, lack a certain focus that t
EXTD=he band applied later, especially to Eyees. Both arre used as spa
EXTD=cce out jam fests (especially Eyes) and they lose some of their e
EXTD=nergy, if not their beauty, presented on other DPs and live Dead.
EXTD= Generally, the less said about WRS, the better, but here the son
EXTD=g is still fresh and new to the band and it shows. This cd ends w
EXTD=ith a very strong Sugar. While I like cd 2, it is my least favori
EXTD=te of this four cd set.\n\nCD 3 is from the Dec. 2 show and, I su
EXTD=ggest, is one of the best first sets in the entire DP collection.
EXTD= Brown Eyed Women and Ramble on Rose are great songs and are rare
EXTD=ly found, especially together and without Donna. \n\nCD 4 is awes
EXTD=ome. The PlayingITB dissolves entirely into a spacey jam and out
EXTD=of it evolves a fantastic slide guitar solo by Jerry that sounds
EXTD=hauntingly familiar, but I cannot place the tune. Any way it's al
EXTD=l fantastic. He's Gone especially and Truckin are both great. And
EXTD= then... when you look at the last two songs, Stella and Morning,
EXTD= you may think that this is a really boring way to end the concer
EXTD=t. But remember, these cds have an over-all mellowness to them an
EXTD=d this ending is in keeping perfectly with what has come before.
EXTD=And the best part is that the Morning builds ever slow slowly to
EXTD=a fantastic crescendo -- the result of a tension building march t
EXTD=hat is finally released by the band. Maybe the best Morning Dew t
EXTD=hat I've heard by the boys.\n\nOne nit to pick is that the bookle
EXTD=t is sparse and not that well done for a four cd set. Throughout
EXTD=the musicianship is very good. Especailly of note are both Phil's
EXTD= bass and Keith's piano. And most importantly Jerry's voice sound
EXTD=s oh so sweet. He is in his prime here both in voice and on guita
EXTD=r. You will get a great feel for the band's progression in this e
EXTD=ra by listening to DP 14, DP 1 and then DP 7. By far this is one
EXTD=of my favorite live Dead collections. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Rev

EXTD= (Portland, Maine Observatory) \nWicked Good! During a weird tran
EXTD=sition for the band, some great music is preserved in this 4 CD s
EXTD=et. PigPen has recently passed. You have the band (minus Mickey a
EXTD=nd Donna), the crew, and the audience all getting involved in thi
EXTD=s Beantown Barn Burner. Everyone is loose and having fun and it c
EXTD=omes right through the speakers as if it were happening through t
EXTD=he nearest wormhole or right around the corner. Imageries of ghos
EXTD=ts of colonial patriots dressed as indians dancing to the beat of
EXTD= their own little tea-party, unbeknownst to some of the drunken c
EXTD=rowd as the dead break into "Beer Barrel Polka"... Let it be said
EXTD= that deadheads are not usually known for booze. There must have
EXTD=been a bar in the back of the hall. Some cool moments are capture
EXTD=d as Bobby tests the equipment, "whooping" up sound checks betwee
EXTD=n songs as Phil cracks jokes and fools with the audience as the c
EXTD=rew work with a scaled down version of "the wall of sound" to fit
EXTD= into the music hall. Rowdy crowd yet very intimate. Collected fr
EXTD=om 2 nights, I prefer to start with disc 3 and end with 2 (3->4->
EXTD=1->2). "Cold Rain and Snow" begins, turn it up, and 'Boogie'!! It
EXTD= sounds sooo good! Man, what fun! \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\n
EXTD=Dick's Picks Only Get Better From Here, July 19, 2002\nReviewer:
EXTD="pmbellocq" (Slidell, LA USA)\nI should have paid more attention
EXTD=to the lowest rated reviews for this one, as I bought this one us
EXTD=ed and somewhat regret it. Parts of this set sounds downright let
EXTD=hargic, almost to the point of sounding drunk. If it were not for
EXTD= the second CD and a few other good moments, this would be a two-
EXTD=star effort. By itself, it is not really a bad set of 4 CD's, but
EXTD= it's just that almost any other live Grateful Dead CD's will hav
EXTD=e better versions than what is presented here. This set also has
EXTD=the distinction of having one of the worst versions of Playin' In
EXTD= The Band that I have ever heard. If you don't believe me, simply
EXTD= load up your jukebox with all of your live Gratedful Dead CD's a
EXTD=nd then program the same songs such they can play back to back. I
EXTD= honestly don't see how any music fan could choose the versions f
EXTD=rom this set over any of the other available live CD's (I am not
EXTD=into taping, as you have probably already guessed). As for those
EXTD=of you who really like the very laid back Dead shows, all is not
EXTD=lost. I can recommend Dick's Picks 19, which has a crystal clear
EXTD=sound and was recorded about two months prior to this set. That s
EXTD=et has a laid back feel due to the heavier jazz influence. Pass o
EXTD=n this one, as this is the worst one that I have heard from the D
EXTD=ick's Picks series. Still in all, bad DP is better than most othe
EXTD=r music out there.\n\nHalf.com Album Credits\nBill Candelario, En
