EXTD=ychedelia with a vengeance on this album -- their best of their e
EXTD=ntire history -- which also retains a soulful core and adds a bit
EXTD= of a Latin beat. The original album on Atlantic was a monster se
EXTD=ller thanks to the title track, practically the group's signature
EXTD= tune (number one on the pop charts, number three on R&B), but "G
EXTD=roovin'" was only one small strong point on the album of the same
EXTD= name. "Find Somebody" marked a return to the group's garage band
EXTD= sound with a psychedelic twist, including phased fuzztone guitar
EXTD=s and some catchy lyrics and choruses. "How Can I Be Sure" is the
EXTD= second-best-known song off of this album, but it has a fully suc
EXTD=cessful companion piece, "I'm So Happy Now," which applies simila
EXTD=r instrumentation to very different (but pleasing) effect. Gene C
EXTD=ornish's "I Don't Love You Anymore" could be the finest pop song
EXTD=in the band's repertory apart from "How Can I Be Sure," with a de
EXTD=lectable guitar part, scrumptious melody, and delicious chorus. "
EXTD=You Better Run" was more than a year old when it turned up on thi
EXTD=s album, and its garage band sensibilities are a bit more primiti
EXTD=ve than those of "Find Somebody," but it's a great piece of rock
EXTD=& roll. The band turns in one superb Motown cover, "A Place in th
EXTD=e Sun," done in a surprisingly subdued fashion. And for a finale,
EXTD= Cavaliere and Brigati turn in an exultant period piece, "It's Lo
EXTD=ve," whose soaring lyrics are matched by guest artist Hubert Laws
EXTD=' flute -- alas, his presence would point the way toward less eff
EXTD=ective, more disjointed work in the group's future, as they moved
EXTD= more deeply into psychedelia. \n\n[Collectors Choice's 2007 reis

EXTD=y cool classics, October 22, 2007 \nBy  T. LeBaron "Todd LeBaron"
EXTD= (NH) \nCollectors Choice is getting to be as good at reissues as
EXTD= Rhino Records with these Rascals reissues of all seven of their
EXTD=Atlantic albums (Sundazed has the other two, originally on Columb
EXTD=ia in the Rascals' final years). What's particularly nice about t
EXTD=he first four of these is that you get the stereo AND mono mixes
EXTD=of all the songs (in the case of Once Upon a Dream, the mixes are
EXTD= noticeably different) along with completely restored cover art a
EXTD=nd liner notes. Groovin', as many others have said, might be the
EXTD=best place for the uninitiated to start their Rascals collections
EXTD= (along with the Ultimate Rascals package on Warner Special Produ
EXTD=cts with 20 tracks, including everything on the Time Peace Greate
EXTD=st hbits disc and six more). Great job, Collectors Choice...some
EXTD=long overdue respect for these classics! \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOME

EXTD=nt!!!, October 31, 2003\nReviewer: A music fan\nThis is one of th
EXTD=e great albums of the 1960's. The Rascals are often slagged for b
EXTD=eing a singles band. This assumption is far from the truth, many
EXTD=of their albums are excellent. This recording is where psychelia,
EXTD= soul, folk-rock, garage punk, and ethinic elements mesh successf
EXTD=ully into one cohesive offering. The hits (Groovin, How Can I Be
EXTD=Sure, and A Girl Like You)do not a need further explanation. You
EXTD=Better Run is an incredible early punk rock tune that has proved
EXTD=to be very influential. Find Somebody has menacing circular guita
EXTD=r riffs that grab the listener immediately. I'm So Happy Now coul
EXTD=d have easily found a home on the Beach Boy's masterful Pet Sound
EXTD=s album. Sueno burns with 60's experimention including backward c
EXTD=ymbals and a fiery spanish guitar style riff. Every song is a win
EXTD=ner and very individual. This is the Rascals version of the Beatl
EXTD=e's great Revolver album (still their best!) In addition, the Ras
EXTD=cals voices sound excellent and they have not abodoned their soul
EXTD= roots. This is an essential listen for any 60's rock fan!\n\nAMA
EXTD=ZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nStill Sounding Good After 30+ Years, Jun
EXTD=e 4, 2001\nReviewer: Kurt Harding "bon vivant" (Boerne TX)\nMy in
EXTD=terest in top-40 music had a very short lifespan; by the time I w
EXTD=as 13 I had left most of it behind to listen to all the great pro
EXTD=gressive music that came out of the late 60s. One of the few exce
EXTD=ptions is that I always liked the Young Rascals and I still do to
EXTD=day. There was just something about their music which set them ap
EXTD=art from their top-40 contemporaries. Groovin' was one of the top
EXTD= songs of 1967, but this album offers much more. First, there are
EXTD= the distinctive voices of Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati, the
EXTD=n there is the robust R&B feel to much of their work with occasio
EXTD=nal flashes of Latin influences. Groovin' contains lots of great
EXTD=songs:A Girl Like You, the romantic How Can I Be Sure, the title
EXTD=cut, If You Knew, the jazz-inflected It's Love, and my favorite A
EXTD= Place in the Sun which at almost 5 minutes long, was unusually l
EXTD=ong for a song of that period. There are only a couple of songs t
EXTD=hat didn't come through the remastering well, notably Find Somebo
EXTD=dy. If you grew up in the 60s, this album will really carry you b
EXTD=ack. If not, the Rascal's joyful, uplifting, R&B tinged romantici
EXTD=sm will make you a convert. I heartily recommend this CD which st
EXTD=ill sounds good after 30+ years.\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nG
EXTD=reat way to daydream on days gone bye..., March 14, 1999\nReviewe
EXTD=r: A music fan\nThis was a great album to bring back memories of
EXTD='68 just before the invasion of the heavy stuff. I think that the
EXTD= Young Rascals were the first to produce an album that had a cont
EXTD=inuous story that unfolded musically, that album was Once Upon a
EXTD=Dream, which is reproduced here as "Groovin", giving credit to on
EXTD=e cut that really made the charts. It is unfortunate that Warner
EXTD=made the mistake of leaving out one song that was an important pa
EXTD=rt of the entire "musical trip" offerred by this album. In fact,
EXTD=although the tunes were there, the feel of the original vinyl alb
EXTD=um is gone. Hey, Warner try it again and this time just reproduce
EXTD= the entire "Once Upon a Dream" album without the editing license
EXTD=.\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nmemories of the good ole days.,
EXTD=February 2, 1999\nReviewer: A music fan\nThis song reminded my of
EXTD= laying around all day in my backyard on a Sunday afternoon with
EXTD=my beautiful girlfriend who eventually became my beautiful wife.
EXTD=Thanks for the memories!\n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nThe (Young) Ras
EXTD=cals' best-known album is this 1967 release, thanks to the title
EXTD=track, the group's biggest-ever single. An infectiously lazy quas
EXTD=i-bossa nova with more hooks than really should be allowed in any
EXTD= one song, "Groovin'" is a stone classic, one of the best and mos
EXTD=t-beloved singles of the '60s.\n\nThe fact that GROOVIN' has anot
EXTD=her hit single which some fans think is even better--the gorgeous
EXTD=ly melodramatic, spacious "How Can I Be Sure"--makes this by defa
EXTD=ult better than any of the Young Rascals' more scattershot and co
EXTD=vers-heavy earlier albums. The other nine tracks are cut from the
EXTD= same stylistic cloth as the hits: more refined and quieter than
EXTD=their raucous early hits, songs like "I'm So Happy Now" and "If Y
EXTD=ou Knew" are delightful collisions of lite-psych and jazz-inflect
EXTD=ed blue-eyed soul. GROOVIN' is a delightful album and probably th
EXTD=e best starting point for this often underrated group.
