EXTD=Listen My Friends! The Best of Moby Grape\n 2007 Sundazed Music,
EXTD= Inc.\n\nOriginally Released May 15, 2007\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW:
EXTD=As a single-disc, 20-track compilation of some of Moby Grape's be
EXTD=st material (with a radio ad for their Truly Fine Citizen album t
EXTD=acked on at the end), this works fine. As something that should r
EXTD=eally be worthy of the name "best-of," it's more problematic. For
EXTD= Moby Grape really is a group best appreciated by a more extensiv
EXTD=e (yet still selective) overview of its most enduring work, an ex
EXTD=cellent one of which was compiled in 1993 for the double-CD Vinta
EXTD=ge: The Very Best of Moby Grape. This briefer anthology includes
EXTD=just two songs, "Changes, Circles Spinning," and "If You Can't Le
EXTD=arn from My Mistakes," that didn't appear on Vintage, and can't h
EXTD=elp but suffer in comparison. That's not least because it include
EXTD=s just six of the songs from their self-titled debut album -- uni
EXTD=versally hailed as their strongest record by far -- where Vintage
EXTD= has every track from that LP. Listen! My Friends still has plent
EXTD=y of good stuff, judiciously cherry-picking their erratic post-Mo
EXTD=by Grape albums for their strongest cuts, though the more melodic
EXTD= country- and folk-oriented songs hold up far better than the blu
EXTD=esier rockers. Indeed, almost every track is impressive, making a
EXTD= case for the band as one of the '60s outfits who most adeptly bl
EXTD=ended rock, folk, blues, and country with touches of psychedelia,
EXTD= as well as showing their post-1967 stuff (at least the best of i
EXTD=t) to be sturdier than is usually remembered. If you remember the
EXTD= original releases, though, you'll find yourself wondering why hi
EXTD=ghlights like "Someday," "Lazy Me," and (from the post-Moby Grape
EXTD= days) "It's a Beautiful Day Today" and "I Am Not Willing" aren't
EXTD= here. Unless you're an extraordinarily impatient listener, then,
EXTD= Vintage remains the comp to find. -- Richie Unterberger\n\n\nAM
EXTD=AZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nARGUABLY THE BEST DAMN BAND OF THE '60S
EXTD=...OR ANY DECADE, 05/18/2007 \nBy Samuel B. King "Sam King" (Con
EXTD=cord, NH)\nI'm serious with this title. Moby Grape, had it not be
EXTD=en mucked over by the record companies, would be considered one o
EXTD=f the best bands of the 1960s, or any other decade. Consider this
EXTD=: their first album was better than the first by the Beatles, Byr
EXTD=ds, Beach Boys, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Rolling Stones (just t
EXTD=o name a few). They had 5 part harmony which could bury the best
EXTD=work by Brian Wilson or the Beatles. Jerry Miller was one of the
EXTD=top five lead guitar players of his generation (the other 4 being
EXTD= the usual suspects, led by Jimi Hendrix). Their three guitar ons
EXTD=laught, driving rhythm section and 5 part harmonies were, simply
EXTD=KILLER (WITH A kapital k!!). And the songwriting was to die for!!
EXTD= Straight rockers like "Hey Grandma", "Changes"(not on this compi
EXTD=lation)and "Indifference", beautiful country ballads like "8:05"
EXTD=and "Ain't that a shame" and psychedelic visionary Skip Spence co
EXTD=mpositions like "Seeing" and "Omaha"!! Its endless. THERE SHOULD
EXTD=BE A LAW AGAINST NOT GIVING SUCH TALENT DISPLAYED BY THIS BAND IT
EXTD=S JUST RECOGNITION!!! A hundred years from now, Moby Grape WILL b
EXTD=e recognized as one of the top groups of its era, long after less
EXTD=er, more well known acts have been long forgotten. Hey, that is t
EXTD=he point, eh? Moby Grape was NOT an act. its passion was REAL!! F
EXTD=or its members all too real. One caveat about this collection: af
EXTD=ter listening to it, you WILL want to seek out all of their first
EXTD= three albums. There are too many choice cuts missing here. I cou
EXTD=ld go on for days. However, suffice it to say you will NEVER hear
EXTD= a finer group of musicians (of any genre). Perhaps that's the po
EXTD=int: they WERE just TOO GOOD to believe at the time. \n\n\nAMAZON
EXTD=.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nWho Killed The Grape?, July 23, 2007 \nBy
EXTD=Marley (Long Island, NY)\nThe much malinged and exhustively chron
EXTD=icled story behind Moby Grape goes something like this. The geniu
EXTD=s A&R team at Columbia Records signed MB in the summer of 1966. T
EXTD=hinking that they had the next Jefferson Airplane on their hands,
EXTD= they set out to launch their new find with a unique and untried
EXTD=promotion. Instead of selecting one or possibly two singles to re
EXTD=lease, they choose instead to release all 12 tracks as singles. T
EXTD=his unfocused and confusing marketing stratgey led to little or v
EXTD=irtually no air play on top-forty radio and mired the band for wh
EXTD=at could have been a huge initial launch. \n\nThe follow-up album
EXTD= "Wow" contained fewer songs that could have found their way into
EXTD= a top-forty format and some quirky gimmicks, like the "Gene Autr
EXTD=y" track and the "Grape Jam" bonus Lp. But even these could not s
EXTD=ave Wow from mideocore sales and little or no air-play. So how va
EXTD=lid is the theory that the Columbia Record Execs killed Grape or
EXTD=is there more to the story? I'm not so sure if it was a case of p
EXTD=oor marketing or simply a band that couldn't produce a pure "radi
EXTD=o-friendly". three minute, danceable, humable and not-so-forgetta
EXTD=ble single. \n\nEven after repeated listenings, I can't help but
EXTD=think that "Listen My Friends" contains some beautiful songs by a
EXTD= band that could not be viewed as short on "chops". No way, these
EXTD= guys could hold their own with most any band of their day, But w
EXTD=as the song writing first rate? Could they stack up against The A
EXTD=irplane, The Doors, The Byrds, The Jimi Hendrix Experience or The
EXTD= Who? I'll have to agree with other reviewers who have called the
EXTD=m "second tier". Afterall what's so bad about being considered in
EXTD= the same breath as Steve Miller, Country Joe & The Fish, Santana
EXTD=, The Blues Project, Electric Flag, The James Gang, Blood Sweat &
EXTD= Tears, Love and so many other fine bands of the golden era of cl
EXTD=assic rock. \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nBuy Crosstalk inste
EXTD=ad, May 24, 2007 \nBy  whoopycat (Des Moines, IA United States)\n
EXTD=I love the Grape, they truly are the great unsung band of the 60'
EXTD=s. Their stuff is almost uniformly great. That said, this is only
EXTD= the 3rd best Moby Grape compilation out there. The best of cours
EXTD=e is the 2-disc "Vintage", which I think you can still find on Am
EXTD=azon UK. If you don't feel like hunting, then get "Crosstalk", wh
EXTD=ich is cheaper than this release and has a better track selection
EXTD=. There's no way a Moby Grape best-of can be considered definitiv
EXTD=e while missing two of their best songs, "Fall On You" and "It's
EXTD=a Beautiful Day Today". \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nThe Bes
EXTD=t and the Brightest..., May 19, 2007 \nBy  Douglas W. Hawes\nIn 1
EXTD=967 Moby Grape was the best band in San Francisco, maybe America.
EXTD= So why haven't you ever heard of 'em? \n\nThe rise and precipito
EXTD=us fall of Moby Grape makes up perhaps the most legendary, and en
EXTD=during, tale of sixties rock. In centuries down the road, people
EXTD=will still be talking about Moby Grape. They were a band which wh
EXTD=en they first appeared on stage in San Francisco immediately esta
EXTD=blished themselves as one of the hottest acts of rock, way ahead
EXTD=of their time in both spirit and prowess, according to Rolling St
EXTD=one writer Ed Naha. \n\nThis collection is a superb coverage of M
EXTD=oby Grape's essential discography, covering all four albums that
EXTD=the band recorded for Columbia. Truthfully there is classic mater
EXTD=ial missing from this compilation from the first album, as well a
EXTD=s the third album "Moby Grape '69," but this just further reinfor
EXTD=ces how brilliant this band really was. \n\nThe 20 songs that hav
EXTD=e been gleaned from Moby Grape's arsenal are overall quite well c
EXTD=hosen. The liner notes are well crafted and inspiring, and the gr
EXTD=aphics and photos are first rate. This collection is a great plac
EXTD=e to start in introducing oneself to one of American rock and rol
EXTD=l's enduring legends. \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nDoesn't L
EXTD=ive Up to the Hype, June 8, 2007 \nBy  Robert G. Daugherty (Los A
EXTD=ngeles, CA)\nMoby Grape is absolutely the most over-rated group t
EXTD=o emerge from the late sixties. What little appeal they might hav
EXTD=e had is mitigated by the ridiculous claims of their followers, i
EXTD=.e. "better first album than the Beatle, Byrds, Stones, Airplane
EXTD=et al". At best, this is a highly debatable claim. At worst, it's
EXTD= a complete falsehood (my view). \n\nSpence's work on the first t
EXTD=wo Airplane albums is better than his work with the Grape thanks
EXTD=to the far superior vocals of Marty Balin/Signe Anderson/Grace Sl
EXTD=ick and the intiguing guitar interplay provided by Casady, Kantne
EXTD=r and Kaukonen. \n\nI've tried to get into the Grape, several tim
EXTD=es. But the hype is such a turn off. Particularly when the group
EXTD=fails miserably to live up to it. \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIE
EXTD=W\nReviewing the group rather than the record, June 11, 2007 \nBy
EXTD= Gregory Starr "gs" (Oslo)\nA new record is out, and I want to k
EXTD=now if it is good. I already know the previous work of Moby Grape
EXTD= and I do not need Sam King telling me how good the group is. He
EXTD=is right but redundant. I want to know if there is anaything new
EXTD=on the record that I have not got or heard. From reading the 8 re
EXTD=viewers, I see no mention of any new material. I assume that ever
EXTD=ything on the record is recycled from the original releases and s
EXTD=everal previous compilations. A proper review might then begin wi
EXTD=th: "why does anyone need this. The second hand stores have copie
EXTD=s of the previous compilations." The next issue is why the record
EXTD= company did not release something new, like the Amsterdam concer
EXTD=t. Should record companies be rewarded when they have such conser
EXTD=vative release policies. Why buy these songs again? Foolish, righ

EXTD=\nMoby Grape may be getting a little hyped in some of the reviews
EXTD= but I have heard five or six truly outstanding tracks on this co
EXTD=llection, enough to convince me to buy the first three remasters

EXTD=s a tremendous guitar player. Poor Spence was a very fine songwri

EXTD= the songs that aren't completely inspired are cleverly arranged
