EXTD=13, 2006\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Boston is one of the best-selling
EXTD=albums of all time, and deservedly so. Because of the rise of dis
EXTD=co and punk, FM rock radio seemed all but dead until the rise of
EXTD=acts like Boston, Tom Petty, and Bruce Springsteen. Nearly every
EXTD=song on Boston's debut album can still be heard on classic rock r
EXTD=adio today due to the strong vocals of Brad Delp and unique guita
EXTD=r sound of Tom Scholz. Tom Scholz, who wrote most of the songs, w
EXTD=as a studio wizard and used self-designed equipment such as 12-tr
EXTD=ack recording devices to come up with an anthemic "arena rock" so
EXTD=und before the term was even coined. The sound was hard rock, but
EXTD= the layered melodies and harmonics reveal the work of a master c
EXTD=raftsman. While much has been written about the sound of the albu
EXTD=m, the lyrics are often overlooked. There are songs about their r
EXTD=ise from a bar band ("Rock and Roll Band") as well as fond rememb
EXTD=rances of summers gone by ("More Than a Feeling"). Boston is esse
EXTD=ntial for any fan of classic rock, and the album marks the re-eme
EXTD=rgence of the genre in the 1970s. -- Vik Iyengar\n\nAMG EXPERT RE

EXTD= fifteen million copies and featured the smash hits "More than a
EXTD=Feeling, " "Peace of Mind, " and "Let Me Take You Home Tonight."

EXTD=one, perfectly remastered., June 23, 2006\nReviewer: M J Heilbron
EXTD= Jr. "Dr. Mo" (Long Beach, CA United States)\nYou are reading thi
EXTD=s, I hope, in order to decide whether or not to purchase this CD.
EXTD= \nYou are probably inordinately familiar with the album. It is a
EXTD=n album, like "Rumours" or "Saturday Night Fever" or "Frampton Co
EXTD=mes Alive", which captures and defines the best and worst of an e
EXTD=ra. It sounds like nothing else of the time. \nSure, it has a lit
EXTD=tle Queen, a little southern boogie, a little ELO even...but it's
EXTD= a "Boston" sound, through and through. \nThere's no need to addr
EXTD=ess the individual songs. \nYou know them. You love them. You hav
EXTD=e them memorized. \nYou know that the end of the album gets a lit
EXTD=tle weak, but you probably kept replaying that one side anyways.
EXTD=Or at least MOST of the time. \nSo, the BIG question is...how wel
EXTD=l is the remastering done? \nWell, you know how some remastering
EXTD=cleans things up with such detail and precision you feel like you
EXTD= are in the studio? \nOr they expand the soundstage that you can
EXTD="see" the players in their respective position? \nOr the studio t
EXTD=rickery comes alive inside your headphones, making your eyeballs
EXTD=swirl? \n\nNot here. Which is perfect. \nWhat Scholz and company
EXTD=have done is restore and preserve the original warm sound. No mor
EXTD=e pops, clicks or scratches. No more tape hiss from your old 8-tr
EXTD=acks or cassettes. \nThe album never sounded "live" to begin with
EXTD=. There are no dramatic swoops, no bizarre effects. \nThe songs a
EXTD=re mixed as a whole. Vocals are overdubbed, guitars are processed
EXTD=...this is not an attempt at reality, this is rock and roll fanta
EXTD=sy. \nAnd as such, it works phenomenally well. The instruments ar
EXTD=e warm and clear. The vocals soar operatically. \nYou'll sing alo
EXTD=ng in your car or on your iPod in embarrassing fashion, and you'l
EXTD=l air-guitar about half a dozen times. You won't be able to resis
EXTD=t. \nYou'll recall all the fun you had in the seventies, and none
EXTD= of the bad fashion or haircuts. \nTime to buy now. Have a nice d

EXTD= J. Thomas "jimmyjames8" (Out on the Lost Highway)\nIt's been 30
EXTD=years since going to the Record Bar and hearing Boston blasting o
EXTD=ut of some (Bose probably) speakers hanging on the wall. It didn'
EXTD=t take with me at first and then it did and then they were just o
EXTD=verplayed and over exposed. Fast forward to summer of '78 and Bos
EXTD=ton is out on tour with Van Halen and the Outlaws doing that O're
EXTD=na Rock thing. They played a gig in the local college football bo
EXTD=wl and damn near if not, blew VH off the stage. Pipe organ et al.
EXTD= \n\nNever owned the records and never played them on the air as
EXTD=a college radio DJ. We were far to progressive and hip for that.
EXTD=Fast forward a lifetime and I read that these discs are out as a
EXTD=Tom Scholz remaster. The guy was just way ahead of his time. A ge
EXTD=nius for sure. They don't let knuckle heads into MIT. A guy from
EXTD=my high school with a perfect SAT score and an AF scholarship, fl
EXTD=unked out and followed a Bhagwan around the globe for a while. \n
EXTD=\nThese discs are excellent. Guitars everywhere. Very high produc
EXTD=tion values. Pristine sound except for the original distortion. B
EXTD=ass guitar parts get better sounding and louder as you go thru bo
EXTD=th discs in running order. Kind of buried in the mix in the first
EXTD= few cuts. Minor quibles. If you are a Boston fan you will have t
EXTD=o have these discs. If you are 16 years old and wonder what all t
EXTD=he fuss was about, you at least need to hear these discs and deci
EXTD=de for yourself. Air guitar lessons will be the next step.\n\nAMA
EXTD=ZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nGreat remaster!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, June 15,
EXTD=2006\nReviewer: Chi Fan - See all my reviews\nBelow is a letter f
EXTD=rom Tom Scholz posted on Boston.org regarding the remastering of
EXTD=this album and the follow-up, Don't Look Back, but before I get t
EXTD=o that I have a few comments. \n\nI have loved this album since i
EXTD=t's debut in 1976 and I have always felt that the last song "Let
EXTD=Me Take You Home Tonight" sounded different from the other songs
EXTD=and now the liner notes of the remastered "Boston" verify that be
EXTD=lief. On all of the other songs, with few exceptions, Tom Scholz
EXTD=played all instruments except drums. Barry played a lead here and
EXTD= Fran played a bass there, but that is about it. That is, except
EXTD=for "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" where Tom only played the orga
EXTD=n. I mention this because I remember folks complaining about "Thi
EXTD=rd Stage" and "Walk On" stating that they could tell a difference
EXTD= between these latter albums, which noted Tom as the player of mo
EXTD=st of the instruments, and the earlier ones where Boston was "a b
EXTD=and." Little did they know that it was the same method. \n\nA let
EXTD=ter from Tom Scholz regarding the newly remastered Debut album an
EXTD=d Don't Look Back! \n\nWhat the Deuce IS UP With Boston? \n\nMy a
EXTD=pologies to you all for the unintentional silence about Boston ac
EXTD=tivities and plans, especially concerning a reissue of the first
EXTD=two Boston albums. Oddly enough I was just beginning a letter lik
EXTD=e this, when that topic jumped onto my computer, forcing me to dr
EXTD=op everything, including communicating with all of you. \nSo now
EXTD=you know I do see postings on these sites! Not all of them, but e
EXTD=nough to know your collective feelings about Boston, and btw, tha
EXTD=nk you. \nEven though half of what I read is dead wrong and the o
EXTD=ther half I disagree with (you knew I was hard to please...), it'
EXTD=s really gratifying to know that so many people appreciate this m
EXTD=usic and the message behind it. Those of you who just write to sa
EXTD=y encouraging things, please believe that you have saved me from
EXTD=giving up many times! \n\nSo, after the 2004 Boston tour ended, I
EXTD= set about recording some new material. Some of it sounds more li
EXTD=ke old Boston, some sounds more like later albums, all of it has
EXTD=me excited. Unfortunately I was hampered from working effectively
EXTD= in the studio by complications from a back injury in 2003. \nIt
EXTD=seems I may have been the victim of something my doctor referred
EXTD=to as acetaminophen poisoning. I used Tylenol regularly on and of
EXTD=f the tours for some time, and as I have since read about, this a
EXTD=pparently may have wreaked havoc with the health of some importan
EXTD=t organs. No, I don't mean the Hammond or the pipe organ, I mean
EXTD=mine. \nFortunately I'm now doing much better and back to full st
EXTD=rength, and full speed in the studio...OK, I know what you're thi
EXTD=nking, just keep it to yourself! \nI had to hold up recording for
EXTD= a couple of weeks last year for some overdue studio repairs; thr
EXTD=ee months later I was nearly finished soldering, drilling, and ba
EXTD=nging when I discovered the announced Sony Legacy Boston reissue
EXTD=on line. (Funny how ex-band members who haven't played in Boston
EXTD=for 25 years knew about these plans ahead of time...) I was mildl
EXTD=y surprised to find out that two albums embodying all of my writi
EXTD=ng, performing, producing and engineering work from the 70's had
EXTD=been "remastered" by someone I didn't know, with added live recor
EXTD=dings mixed by someone else I didn't know, and I hadn't even hear
EXTD=d it! When I finally did hear it, I wished I hadn't. \n\nAlthough
EXTD= I got used to getting screwed royally by business types in the m
EXTD=usic world, the audacity of this particularly inconsiderate liber
EXTD=ty with my art got my attention very quickly. \nAlthough I was pr
EXTD=etty sure there had been a violation of my rights using the name
EXTD=Boston for this abomination, I decided to try the diplomatic, pea
EXTD=ceful approach, averting another war and creating something reall
EXTD=y valuable in the process: A comprehensive remastering of the two
EXTD= oldest albums to bring the old mixes up to the standards of 21st
EXTD= century recordings. \nFortunately my real manager did a great jo
EXTD=b of quickly getting Legacy to see my point of view, and change t
EXTD=heir plans. \nNow I know there are those of you who would go out
EXTD=and spend good money (oxymoron) for anything that says "new unrel
EXTD=eased Boston," but before you go off on me for committing new rel
EXTD=easus interuptus, I want you to know you owe me BIG TIME! The so
EXTD=called new material consisted of two Philly KBFH (despite what yo
EXTD=u may have read elsewhere) not-our-best-night renditions of Smoki
EXTD=n' and FPLY/LT, plus a trashy discard I used to toss in on the fi
EXTD=rst tour 'cause we didn't have enough music for a full set! They
EXTD=didn't even have the name right! \nThese "bonus" track mixes were
EXTD= obviously not made by Boston. Hearing the huge stereo Boston mix
EXTD= style suddenly disappear when the live cuts started was a little
EXTD= scary (even our live sound is carefully mixed in wide stereo, as
EXTD= most of you know first hand). But the real kicker was a technica
EXTD=l problem with Brad's vocal track that showed up as a very distra
EXTD=cting constant, weird phasing. \nAnd that wasn't the worst part:
EXTD=the studio recordings were just transfers to digital using the sa
EXTD=me EQ moves I prescribed for mastering them 30 years ago when eve
EXTD=rything had to be done manually, and not very precisely by modern
EXTD= standards. Not only could I hear no improvement, the overly hot
EXTD=sibilant portions that were listenable on vinyl and tape were now
EXTD= nails-on-blackboard piercing. Anyway, if you haven't figured it
EXTD=out yet, I didn't like it. \nOne good thing though, thinking abou
EXTD=t live Boston made me realize I have to dig out some tapes and pu
EXTD=t together some high quality mixes of our tour arrangements; some
EXTD= of them were totally cool. Dude. \n\nSo, we got Sony to retransf
EXTD=er from the original stereo analogue mix tapes (not the EQ'd 2nd
EXTD=gen copy companies tend to use) to 24 bit digital, and went to wo
EXTD=rk in Protools going over every second of those mixes til we were
EXTD= nearly batty. It took Bill Ryan and me eight straight LONG days
EXTD=of work, which btw was precisely when I was supposed to be in the
EXTD= FL Keys celebrating my birthday. Finally we made the final adjus
EXTD=tments with Toby Mountain at Northeastern Digital, then I joined
EXTD=Kim Hart and Gary Pihl working on the photos and booklet layout r
EXTD=evisions. I think you'll like the new pics. \nSomewhere in betwee
EXTD=n I wrote a little bit about the famous demo and the making of th
EXTD=e first album I call "Make Extra Money Working at Home in Your Ow
EXTD=n Basement," and also clarified and expanded the credits sections
EXTD=. David Wild of Rolling Stone fame also wrote an excellent piece
EXTD=from a fan's perspective for each album. \n\nBut the exciting sto
EXTD=ry is what you're going to hear when you put this CD in your play
EXTD=er. The difference is amazing to me. The guitars jump out of the
EXTD=speakers on those power chords, Brad's voice is full and warm in
EXTD=the mix like it should have been, the bass is tight and now you n
EXTD=ot only hear it, you feel it! I never liked these old mixes on 16
EXTD= bit CD; now they sound great. \nHopefully most of you will liste
EXTD=n to this directly from the CD, not an MP3! Don't get me started.
EXTD=...Now exactly when that will be possible via actual release Sony
EXTD= is not saying, but they were in enough of a hurry to ruin my b-d
EXTD=ay vacation, so presumably it will be very soon. Most recent rumo
EXTD=r: mid May. \nBtw, lest you think I'm trumpeting here to get sale
EXTD=s up, be assured Brad and I don't get treated any better financia
EXTD=lly from this than we did form the original release. You don't th
EXTD=ink that just because we wrote it, performed most of the tracks,
EXTD=and produced it we get most of the money do you? \nBut it was wor
EXTD=th taking the time for this. I've always wanted to make those alb
EXTD=ums sound good on CD, and the chance arrived. It's good to work o
EXTD=n your birthday. \n\nTom Scholz \n\nHalf.com Details \nProducer:
EXTD=John Boylan, Tom Scholz \n\nAlbum Notes\nBoston: Brad Delp (vocal
EXTD=s); Tom Scholz (guitar, organ); Barry Goudreau (guitar); Fran She
EXTD=enan (bass); Sib Hassian (drums).\n\nRecorded at Foxglove Studios
EXTD=, Watertown, Massachusetts; Capitol Studios, Hollywood, Californi
EXTD=a; The Record Plant, Los Angeles, California between 1975 and 197
EXTD=6.\n\nRecorded on a simple 12-track recorder as a demo, it was so
EXTD= good that the record company released it. Tom Scholz masterminde
EXTD=d the project in his spare time; little did he know that this rec
EXTD=ord came to define AOR, and would become a hi-fi store standard d
EXTD=emo disc. Since that time, this record-breaking debut has sold 15
EXTD= million copies in its homeland. Sholtz put so much effort into m
EXTD=aking it, he has managed only three further records in 22 years.
EXTD="More Than A Feeling" still chills in a corny sort of way and the
EXTD= harmonies are pretty impressive.
