EXTT0=The first movement is in sonata form, following a formal model that had g
EXTT0=uided Beethoven throughout his career. The mood is generally bleak and st
EXTT0=ormy. A striking moment here is the onset of the recapitulation section, 
EXTT0=which instead of literally repeating the pianissimo opening bars in D min
EXTT0=or, switches to fortissimo D major, a key change which has struck many li
EXTT0=steners, paradoxically, as expressing terror or awe. Piccolo,Contrabassoo
EXTT0=n, and Trombones are not called for in this movement; however this is the
EXTT0= first appearance of a quartet of horns in a Beethoven symphony.
EXTT1=The second movement, a scherzo, is likewise in D minor, with the opening 
EXTT1=theme a kind of echo of the theme of the first movement, a pattern found 
EXTT1=likewise in the Hammerklavier piano sonata, written a few years earlier. 
EXTT1=It is notable for its propulsive rhythm and timpani solos (for this purpo
EXTT1=se the two timpani are tuned, unusually, an octave apart). At one point B
EXTT1=eethoven gives the direction ritmo di tre battute, meaning that the beats
EXTT1= of three consecutive measures must form a single rhythmic unit, as if th
EXTT1=e music were in 9/4 instead of 3/4 time; this is later reverted with ritm
EXTT1=o di quattro battute, with the typical four-measure beat. The contrasting
EXTT1= trio section is in D major and in duple time. The trio also marks the fi
EXTT1=rst arrival of the trombones in the work.\n
EXTT2=The lyrical and deeply felt slow movement, in B-flat major, is written in
EXTT2= a loose variation form, with each of the two variations dividing the bas
EXTT2=ic beat to produce a more elaborate melodic configuration than what went 
EXTT2=before. The first variation, like the theme, is in 4/4 time, the second i
EXTT2=n 12/8. The variations are separated by more impassioned passages in 3/4,
EXTT2= the first in D major, the second in G major. The final variation is twic
EXTT2=e interrupted by striking episodes in which loud fanfares for the full or
EXTT2=chestra are answered by double-stopped octaves played by the first violin
EXTT2=s alone. Also worth noting is a virtuosic horn solo assigned to the fourt
EXTT2=h player. Trombones are tacet for the movement.\n
