EXTD=rst Liberty album is overall slightly more successful than its su
EXTD=ccessor and holds up very nicely -- as rock & roll, it's not in a
EXTD= league with, say, Elvis Presley's best music of the period, or a
EXTD= match for the Beach Boys' albums for musical depth, but it estab
EXTD=lished the duo as the latter band's more lighthearted, fun-orient
EXTD=ed rivals/colleagues. Beyond the title tune (which was a modest h
EXTD=it), Jan & Dean turn in solid, rocking versions of the latter gro
EXTD=up's "Surfin'" and "Surfin' Safari," have delightfully mindless f
EXTD=un on numbers like "Let's Turkey Trot," and show their appreciati
EXTD=on of their East Coast rivals the Four Seasons with an exuberant
EXTD=version of "Walk Like a Man," while their rendition of "Rhythm of
EXTD= the Rain" has a low-key charm that wasn't usually associated wit
EXTD=h this duo (and comes off very well). The usual backup musicians,
EXTD= including Hal Blaine on drums and Glen Campbell, Tommy Tedesco,
EXTD=and Billy Strange on guitar, keep everything tight and seamless i
EXTD=n the backup department, giving Jan & Dean ample opportunity for
EXTD=vocal acrobatics and comic antics on numbers like "Mr. Bass Man."
EXTD= The duo also turns in a respectable version of the Rooftop Singe
EXTD=rs/Gus Cannon hit "Walk Right In," with an anonymous female singe
EXTD=r added to the vocals, which doesn't add anything special to thei
EXTD=r catalog (though it does anticipate the Folk 'n Roll album by th
EXTD=ree years), but balancing that is a delightful cover of Lou Chris
EXTD=tie's "The Gypsy Cried" and a good try at turning the Victor Youn
EXTD=g pop standard "My Foolish Heart" into a "Blue Moon"-type doo wop
EXTD= hit. In other words, there's a lot of charm, laughter, and smile
EXTD=s to be found in listening to this record, which makes it one of
EXTD=the more enduring lightweight rock & roll albums of its era. --

EXTD=Edition)\nA "Must Have!", February 22, 2000 \nBy  Derek Blaustein
EXTD= (Parsippany, NJ United States)\n\nIf you are a Jan & Dean fan, y
EXTD=ou really must have this CD. "Take Linda Surfin" for those who ha
EXTD=ve never heard it, is a very interesting album. There are many st
EXTD=yles of music within it. A little bit of surf music, folk music,
EXTD=doo-wop, and other cool stuff, all together on one great album. O
EXTD=f course, the classic hit "Linda" is included, which I think is a
EXTD=n awesome record! "Ride the Wild Surf" is also a great album! In
EXTD=this album, Jan & Dean give us what they are known best for... Th
EXTD=e Surf Sound. All the songs are surf songs. "Ride the Wild Surf"
EXTD=and "Sidewalk Surfin" are the big hits from the album, but all th
EXTD=e songs are great surf recordings!\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIE
EXTD=W (One Way Records 2fer Edition)\nReissue of Two LP's, November 1
EXTD=3, 1999 \nReviewer: A music fan\n\nAs the picture above shows, th
EXTD=is CD is a reissue of two Jan & Dean LP's from the mid sixties. I
EXTD=t's nice to have J & D's songs reissued as complete albums rather
EXTD= than the usual "best of" stuff. \n\nThe CD label is "One Way Rec
EXTD=ords". I've never heard of them. The address is New York, so it d
EXTD=oes not appear to be an import. \n\nThe sound quality is as good
EXTD=as any Jan & Dean reissue I've ever heard, and I've heard a lot o
EXTD=f them. Almost all songs are in flawless true stereo. Only track
EXTD=18 is in simulated stereo, but also appeared that way on the orig
EXTD=inal LP. Oh yea, the bonus track is also in simulated stereo, but
EXTD= hey, that wasn't part of the original LP's anyway. Also, the ste
EXTD=reo is in the original "Visual Sound Stereo" as originally heard
EXTD=on the Liberty LP's. "Visual Sound Stereo" typically meant the ma
EXTD=in vocal was heard on one channel only instead of the middle as i
EXTD=s typical today. Jan & Dean LP's were well known for this type of
EXTD= stereo mixing. And a thank you to One Way Records for not trying
EXTD= to remix the stereo. This is how they sounded on the original LP
EXTD='s and that's the way it should be kept, end of debate. \n\nHalf.
