EXTD=e East 1969\n2007 RCA/Legacy\n\nOriginally Released May 15, 2007\n
EXTD=\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Jefferson Airplane were less focused in 1969
EXTD= than they had been in the Summer of Love two years before. Recor
EXTD=ded at the Fillmore East, these performances find the Airplane co
EXTD=ming off their most recent album, Volunteers, released a month ea
EXTD=rlier, with the band a lot looser (drug use aside) and fractured.
EXTD= The factions in the group were presenting themselves during perf
EXTD=ormances, and this set is no exception. Guitarist Jorma Kaukonen
EXTD=and bassist Jack Cassidy connected and jammed like they would hav
EXTD=e been just as content without the vocals getting in the way, Gra
EXTD=ce Slick and Paul Kantner combined their voices and played off ea
EXTD=ch other, while Marty Balin screamed and crammed lyrics together,
EXTD= leaving little space for anyone else. During this era, harmonizi
EXTD=ng seemed out of the question, especially when the older tracks,
EXTD=like "Plastic Fantastic Lover," were being played at warp speed.
EXTD=Slick and Balin mainly yell over each other, a combination of cla
EXTD=shing personalities and competition with the sheer volume of the
EXTD=instruments. In the era of Cream and Hendrix, the Airplane had be
EXTD=come entwined with jazz-influenced improvisation and the distorte
EXTD=d, electric end of the blues; the softer, folkie side of the band
EXTD= was nowhere to be found. For what the Airplane were doing at the
EXTD= time, there's no doubt that this was exciting and adventurous mu
EXTD=sic, albeit without the intimate yin to the blazing yang. Collect
EXTD=ors will want to pick up this set, at the very least, for the inc
EXTD=lusion of the rarely heard "Uncle Sam Blues," "You Wear Your Dres
EXTD=ses Too Short," and "Come Back Baby." -- Al Campbell\n\n\nAmazon
EXTD=.com Editorial Review\nSweeping Up the Spotlight: Live at the Fil
EXTD=lmore East 1969 features the definitive edition of Jefferson Airp
EXTD=lane, icons of 1960s psychedelic rock and political agitation. Ja
EXTD=ck Casady and Spencer Dryden hold down the free-floating rhythms
EXTD=on bass and drums, Jorma Kaukonen launches feedback-laced guitar
EXTD=solos, and Paul Kantner adds rhythm guitar and backing vocals. To
EXTD=pping it all are the voices of Marty Balin and the '60s acid quee
EXTD=n, Grace Slick. In concert, the Airplane were always more rough a
EXTD=nd ready than on their acid-hued vinyl. Outside the studio, they
EXTD=were ramshackle and punky, which is why they were sometimes refer
EXTD=enced when talking about punk bands like X, who also had male and
EXTD= female lead singers. Despite having six albums under their belt,
EXTD= mostly consisting of original material, the Airplane's live set
EXTD=has a lot of mediocre blues and folk filler. Some of their more c
EXTD=haracteristic repertoire is sacrificed to workman-like renditions
EXTD= of "Uncle Sam Blues" and "Come Back Baby," albeit with some ripp
EXTD=ing Kaukonen guitar solos. Balin's raucous rant on "You Wear Your
EXTD= Dresses too Short" is embarrassing in its soul-singer aspiration
EXTD=s. Assuming this was their set sequence, it takes a while for the
EXTD= Airplane to congeal on stage. They ride roughshod over much of t
EXTD=heir materiel, but pull it together two-thirds of the way through
EXTD= on one of their most complex tunes, "The Ballad of You and Me an
EXTD=d Pooneil." With its shifting time signatures and overlapping voc
EXTD=al lines and harmonies, it's a challenge to pull off live, but th
EXTD=ey do, with soaring vocals from Balin and Slick and a long instru
EXTD=mental jam with a fractured guitar solo from Kaukonen and a featu
EXTD=re slot for bassist Casady, the most innovative and powerful bass
EXTD=ist from that era. That paves the way for a darker version of "Wh
EXTD=ite Rabbit," the mock celebration of "Crown of Creation," and the
EXTD=ir show closer, a hyped rendition of Fred Neil's ballad "The Othe
EXTD=r Side of This Life." As they always did, the Jefferson Airplane
EXTD=land high. --John Diliberto \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nTru
EXTD=e Flight, July 24, 2007 \nBy  Jeffrey A. Martin (Rochester, NY, U
EXTD=SA)\nOnce this show gets moving and the band finds it's groove, t
EXTD=his show rocks! The classic Jefferson Airplane line-up at a high
EXTD=point of their performing abilities. The last half of this disc s
EXTD=hows what Jefferson AIrplane was truly capable of doing. While it
EXTD='s no "Bless It's Pointed Little Head", it is a stellar performan
EXTD=ce. Well, a combination of two shows, but still some amazing work
EXTD= by the group. This one is definatley worth the price of admissio
EXTD=n. \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nNot flying..., July 24, 2007
EXTD= \nBy  Rodrigo N. Espieira "Rne" (Malaver , Argentina)\nThis rel
EXTD=ease is mostly well-recorded, but, well, the Airplane was not wha
EXTD=t it had been anymore. More rock-oriented than before and sometim
EXTD=es going nowhere (nowhere interesting, at least), the band sounds
EXTD= loud but flat, unimaginative, and, to make matters worse, the vo
EXTD=cals are not in tune AT ALL. Grace's voice was not the same, it s
EXTD=ounds ragged (notably on "White Rabbit") and Kaukonen's guitar is
EXTD= all over, but not to good results. \n\nIt is obvious that Dryden
EXTD= (a very, very, really very good drummer) was not suitable for th
EXTD=e band anymore. Subtelty was just vanishing and the band ended be
EXTD=ing just a monotonous band. \n\nThe cd jacket features one of the
EXTD= most beautiful band photos, taken at golden times, by the way. J
EXTD=orma's liner notes do not say much. \n\nWell, I do not recommend
EXTD=this, as you can guess. \n(For those looking for Airplane live re
EXTD=cordings, I recommend , of course, "Bless Its Pointed Little Head
EXTD=", "Fillmore East 1968" and the concert at Monterey Pop Festival
EXTD=(in that order). \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nI liked this o
EXTD=ne, July 12, 2007 \nBy  Charles A. Robinson\nThere are some new p
EXTD=reviously unreleased live recordings of the Airplane on the marke
EXTD=t. This one is good, and from their best period. I loved the Airp
EXTD=lane in that period, when I consumed illegal substances; crimes f
EXTD=or which the statute of limitations has expired. This has materia
EXTD=l from early Airplane through Volunteers. \n\nThe Airplane's musi
EXTD=cal and technical genius is best reflected in their studio record
EXTD=ings. This is a very good live recording of an excellent sample o
EXTD=f their music. If you think you don't have enough Jefferson Airpl
EXTD=ane records you can buy this one. \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIE
EXTD=W\nYou DO Know Jack, July 5, 2007 \nBy eggsnatcher (Philadelphia
EXTD=, PA USA)\n\nWe can discuss whether or not this CD is as good as
EXTD=BIPLH or not. A couple things I'd like to mention from my perspec
EXTD=tive that make this CD different: \n\n1) If you are a fan of Jack
EXTD='s, then you want this CD. He does a solo on Ballad of You and Me
EXTD= and Pooneil that is OFF THE FREAKING HOOK, my brothers and siste
EXTD=rs. This solo--and Jack took way too few of them if you ask me--
EXTD=feels like tectonic plates shifting. On the rest of the CD his pl
EXTD=aying absolutely ROARS as well. No one before or since has ever p
EXTD=layed bass like Jack. When Jorma joins in after the solo Jack eve
EXTD=n manages to feed on the energy and take it to still a higher lev
EXTD=el. \n\n(Aside: To say the singing and harmonies are "uneven" is
EXTD=to be kind. Like so much of their live work, the vocals are just
EXTD=silly and indulgent.) \n\n2) I really like how you can hear what
EXTD=Kantner was doing for a change. This must be a result of modern s
EXTD=ound technology. It adds a dimension that we had to struggle to e
EXTD=njoy in the past and I am very glad they captured his work here.
EXTD=\n\nIs it better than BIPLH? It's different. It's worth it if onl
EXTD=y for Jack's playing but there is so much more to enjoy too. Take
EXTD= care. \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nYes, they were that good
EXTD=, June 29, 2007 \nBy  M. Denny "The Adventure continues" (Hermosa
EXTD= Beach, CA United States)\nI was born and raised in NYC and whene
EXTD=ver the JA was at the Fillmore (Spring, August, and over Thanksgi
EXTD=ving) I was there for both shows-- the early and late (the latter
EXTD= necessitating going back out after my parents went to bed)-- so
EXTD=I can say with certainty that I was at the performances that are
EXTD=on this disc. \n\nBecause of my experience at these shows, the JA
EXTD= was always THE band. Sometimes Mitch Mitchell of the JH Experien
EXTD=ce would sit in, often there was a free concert in the park on Su
EXTD=nday where the JA, the GD or Santana would blend together. \n\nTh
EXTD=e creativity of the band, the depth and variety of its musicality
EXTD=, its emotional range, its intensity, its fearlesses (and sometim
EXTD=es they did crash!) and its passion all moved me greatly. And bas
EXTD=s player Jack Casady , , , WOW. \n\nThe recorded output of the ba
EXTD=nd, as brilliant as most of it is, never fully captured the Airpl
EXTD=ane live on a night when it was on-- not even "Bless its Pointed
EXTD=Little Head" fully got it-- not the best performance of Bear Melt
EXTD= or Rock Me Baby by a long shot and the other performances such a
EXTD=s Its No Secret, 3/5ths of a Mile, Somebody to Love and Plastic F
EXTD=antastic Lover are no where near the band's peak levels of creati
EXTD=vity and intensity. \n\nIt is from this perspective that I say th
EXTD=at this disc gets it TRUE. \n\nThis was the song of my youth (I'm
EXTD= now 54) and with this disc I touch the place in me that is alway
EXTD=s young. \n\nThat said, I teach martial arts for a living and I f
EXTD=ind that when I play this disc for a training session that my stu
EXTD=dents often ask me "Who was that? That was really good, I want it
EXTD= get one, etc". \n\nThere is something here which resonates acros
EXTD=s time...\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nGreat live CD, June 27
EXTD=, 2007 \nBy Uncle Sam (South Colby, WA United States)\n\nThis is
EXTD= a lot more entertaining than the hit and miss "Live at Filmore E
EXTD=ast" CD put out a few years ago. The band seems a lot more energe
EXTD=tic and up for giving the audience a great performance. The sound
EXTD= quality is still not on par with "Bless It's Pointed Little Head
EXTD=", but far superior than the dismal sound of "Last Flight". The o
EXTD=nly song they could've left off was "You wear your dresses too sh
EXTD=ort", which goes on far longer than needed. I could think of a do
EXTD=zen other JA songs they could've put in there that would've broug
EXTD=ht this up to a 5 star release. \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\n

EXTD=-70--it's at least as good as the live Bless its Pointy Little he
EXTD=ad, and most of the cuts are as good as the best Airplane studio
EXTD=work. Other cuts are like a full metal jacket version of the firs
EXTD=t two Hot Tuna albums. Only live version of the Won't You Try/Sat
EXTD=. Afternoon from After Bathing at Baxters. Only less than stellar
EXTD= cut to my ears is Balin's You Wear Your Dresses too Short. While
EXTD= there are two cuts that were released on the expanded Volunteers

EXTD=By Katherine McCarthy "kath e. miller" (Forest Hills, NY United
EXTD=States)\n\nWhen I saw the November 28 & 29th dates on the back of
EXTD= the CD for this Fillmore East live show I realized I was in the
EXTD=audience for at least one of these nights. My friend Selena & I t
EXTD=ook the R train from Queens to 8th Street & walked the two blocks
EXTD= to the Fillmore. Somehow we had two extra tickets, which we elec
EXTD=ted to give away to two out of towners, who repaid our kindness w
EXTD=ith party favors. As a result, other than remembering the band in
EXTD=front of the moving blobs of light show color, my memory is a lit
EXTD=tle hazy. \n\nConsidering this concert was recorded back in the d
EXTD=ays when dinosaurs roamed the earth, the sound quality is outstan
EXTD=ding. Also, this is NOT the Airplane at the end. This is them a c
EXTD=ouple of months after Woodstock, smack dab in the middle of their
EXTD= reign. \n\nThis will be considered sacrilege but I think I may l
EXTD=ike this live disc even better than Pointed Head. It is at least
EXTD=on par with it. Pointed Head is essence relaxed San Francisco jam
EXTD= music. This show is New York City battering ram. The Airplane is
EXTD= on fire. For once everybody in the band is on the same page - th
EXTD=e vocalists are in tune, weaving in & out & inbetween one another
EXTD=. Everywhere there is a spare opening, Jorma sends out lightning
EXTD=bolts of guitar fire like a Norse god. Spencer Dryden was the ban
EXTD=d's secret weapon, even though shortly after this performance the
EXTD= band showed him the door. His inventive and authoritive backbeat
EXTD= kept the band on track during the guitar and vocal acrobatics. T
EXTD=he Airplane suffered when they switched him out & went with the d
EXTD=rummer-of-the-month club. \n\nAnd then there is Jack. His bass-as
EXTD=-lead solo in the middle of Pooneil is jaw-droppingly brilliant.
EXTD=He just won't behave. I can still remember a free gig in Central
EXTD=Park where the vibrations from his bass rumbled up from the groun
EXTD=d & thru my feet into my body. There never has been another bass
EXTD=player in rock that could touch him, probably never will. This co
EXTD=ncert lets him rock out and strut his stuff. \n\nNearly all the v
EXTD=ersions of classic Airplane songs are better represented here tha
EXTD=n previous incarnations - blasting off with the best version of V
EXTD=olunteers I've ever heard, thru a ripping version of Good Shepard
EXTD= that lays waste the acoustic version, a better organized Pooneil
EXTD= than usual, a sensuous & powerful White Rabbit, Crown of Creatio
EXTD=n on steroids, and core staple Other Side of This Life ripped & g
EXTD=utted by Jorma's blistering solos. Young & strong doesn't even be
EXTD=gin to come close to describing the performances on this CD. \n\n
EXTD=The only out and out cringer (and all live Airplane gigs always h
EXTD=ad a couple)is Marty Balin's excruciating vocals on You Wear Your
EXTD= Dresses Too Short. I wish somebody had turned his mic off. Great
EXTD= jam, embarrassing vocals. \n\nIf you love the Airplane, you need
EXTD= to own this. 40 years later, this CD documents that on a good ni
EXTD=ght nobody could touch them. They tear the roof off. \n\n\n\nAMAZ

EXTD= from Brooklyn\n\nI wonder if all the posters here are listening
EXTD=to the same cd as I am. This is the Airplane at the tail end of t
EXTD=heir power and it ain't pretty. Marty, Grace, and Paul are shouti
EXTD=ng at each other, at times trying (not bothering?)their damnedest
EXTD= to keep up with Jorma, who seems to feel that any space left ope
EXTD=n is a good spot to inject a solo. The unreleased songs, "Uncle S
EXTD=am Blues", "Come Back Baby" and the truly awful "You Wear Your Dr
EXTD=esses Too Short" are time fillers, nothing more. The band is play
EXTD=ing at each other, not with each other and it's sad to hear. The
EXTD=version of "...You Me and Pooneil" is one of the worst I've heard
EXTD=. \n\nLest you think I'm a latecomer to the group, and I don't "g
EXTD=et" them, I'll tell you I'm 53 and have been a rabid fan since th
EXTD=e 60's. This is the Airplane without the joy, rage, muscle and in
EXTD=ventiveness that made them one of the best bands of the era. They
EXTD= were all ready for something else at this point and it shows. St
EXTD=ick with "Bless It's Pointed Little Head" and remember them that

EXTD=r another CD to build the Airplane collection will be very please
EXTD=d with the "Sweeping Up The Spotlight" release. A couple of minor
EXTD= things should have been taken care of. The liner notes are way t
EXTD=oo short and there is no mention if the songs come from November
EXTD=28th or 29th of 69. \n\nSome of the tracks have different arrange
EXTD=ments such as 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds." \n\nThe sound quality

EXTD=By Mr. John L. Ward "John Ward Byrd Brain" (Manchester, England)
EXTD=\n\nWhen I first saw 'Sweeping Up the Spotlight' listed, I was a
EXTD=little sceptical. After all we had already had two official live
EXTD=albums from RCA as well as a whole host of other releases in the
EXTD=so called 'grey market'. To add to this, the tracklisting for 'Sp
EXTD=otlight' looked overly familiar - and I was beginning to wonder w
EXTD=hether there was actually ever a Balin era concert when they they
EXTD= didn't do 'The Other Side of This Life'. I really should have kn
EXTD=own better. The Airplane's capacity for innovation and reinventio
EXTD=n is underpinned here by their trademark instrumental prowess and
EXTD= some wonderful three part harmonies. 'Pooneil'features a virtual
EXTD= masterclass in improvisation from Jack Casady as well as series
EXTD=of especially deranged and discordant 'Zappaesque' sound effects
EXTD=at the beginning. In fairness it should be pointed out that two o
EXTD=f the twelve performances appeared a few years back on the expand
EXTD=ed (Legacy)version of 'Volunteers'. But they sound far better her
EXTD=e in the context of the whole concert - and we have a bonus in Ba
EXTD=lin's 'Dresses Too Short' - the only official version of this one
EXTD= we've heard before is the one from the Box Set - dating from Mar
EXTD=ty's one off performance with the band in 1972. The attractive bo
EXTD=oklet contains a short but reflective essay from Jorma Kaukonen.
EXTD=This concert represents the Airplane at their most musically matu
EXTD=re. Woodstock and their five classic studio albums are behind the
EXTD=m. And yet the purity of their music has yet to be compromised by
EXTD= the departure of Marty Balin and the arrival of later extraneous
EXTD= members. Even if you are not chronically addicted to the Airplan
EXTD=e's music you will love this one. \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIE
