EXTD=Editorial Review (''Brick'' box)\nTalking Heads' 30th anniversary
EXTD= is commemorated in typically artful style here, sonically upgrad
EXTD=ing their eight, era-defining albums via bonus-packed Dual Discs
EXTD=and encasing them in a molded white plastic box intricately embos
EXTD=sed with the band's song titles. Each disc contains complete albu
EXTD=m tracks and bonus cuts remastered in High Resolution Stereo on i
EXTD=ts CD side, while the DVD programming on the flip offers up the a
EXTD=udio tracks in expansive new 5.1 Surround Sound mixes, with all o
EXTD=f the sonic upgrading personally supervised by Heads drummer Jerr
EXTD=y Harrison. Those long overdue audio improvements alone would mak
EXTD=e it an attractive set, but fans of the band will find its wealth
EXTD= of bonus music (various B-sides and previously unreleased outtak
EXTD=es) and video (including a number of rare live clips seeing their
EXTD= first release here) supplements equally intriguing. \n\nBonus mu
EXTD=sical highlights include four rhythmically-charged, unfinished Re
EXTD=main in Light outtakes (including one that eventually evolved int
EXTD=o the band's signature "Once in a Lifetime") that allow insightfu
EXTD=l glimpses into Eno's innovative production techniques on the alb
EXTD=um, alternate versions of "Cities," "Life During Wartime" and "Mi
EXTD=nd" from Fear of Music, a countrified version of "Thank You For S
EXTD=ending Me an Angel" from More Songs About.. and a strangely muted
EXTD= early version of another Heads staple, Speaking in Tongue's "Bur
EXTD=ning Down the House." An early demo of "And She Was" from Little
EXTD=Creatures demostrates that the whole of a glorius pop song can be
EXTD= the assembly of its simple parts. While the additional visual ma
EXTD=terials (especially the raw early performance clips) are a welcom
EXTD=e addition to the Heads' canon, they're also something of a trade
EXTD=off: a few of the band's videos are conspicuously absent, includi
EXTD=ng Remain in Light's "Once in a Lifetime." But overlooking a coup
EXTD=le of the band's better known promotional moments in favor of rev
EXTD=ealing new musical treasures and vastly improved, state-of-the-ar
EXTD=t audio scarcely blunts the appeal of this rewarding career overv
EXTD=iew. -- Jerry McCulley \n\nAmazon.com Album Description (''Brick'
EXTD=' box)\nFormed in the mid-70's by art school chums David Byrne, C
EXTD=hris Franz, and Tina Weymouth-and ex-Modern lover Jerry Harrison-
EXTD=Talking Heads rose out of the CBGB punk crucible and proved thems
EXTD=elves one of the most artistically adventurous and influential ba
EXTD=nds ever. Their visionary, polyrhyhmic sound fused elements inclu
EXTD=ding rock, funk, and punk with diverse world beats, avant-garde m
EXTD=inimalism, and pure pop genius. Inducted into the Rock and Roll H
EXTD=all of Fame in 2002, the band and their groundbreaking repertoire
EXTD= are celebrated in Rhino's deluxe DualDisc upgrade of their catal
EXTD=og. Now their critically praised recordings can be reexperienced
EXTD=as never before, with new DVD-A Surround mixes personally supervi
EXTD=sed by Jerry Harrison. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review (''Brick''
EXTD=box)\nI'm in "Overload", November 18, 2005\nReviewer: Wayne Klein
EXTD= "Wayne Klein" (Fairfield, CA United States)\nThere are very few
EXTD=bands where I own their entire output. Talking Heads is one of th
EXTD=em. Why? Like many pivotal and seminal bands they made memorable
EXTD=music. This collection of the band's eight studio albums comes in
EXTD= the dual disc format with CD audio on one side plus (yea!) bonus
EXTD= tracks, extended remixes and outtakes. The other side features t
EXTD=he entire album remixed in surround sound format with videos, pho
EXTD=to galleries and other enticements. I noticed that some folks com
EXTD=plained about the Dualdiscs not playing on their players. My gues
EXTD=s is that if your player is more than a couple of years old, it m
EXTD=ay not play this format or just have a difficult time finding the
EXTD= instructions on how to play. It's a pretty common problem in sit
EXTD=uations like this. Why four stars and not five? Because the Heads
EXTD= eight albums vary a bit in quality. All of them are worthwhile b
EXTD=ut some or better written or more groundbreaking than others. \n\n
EXTD=The good news--the audio on the CD sound blows away the previous
EXTD=CDs issued in the early 90's. There's better dynamic range which
EXTD=benefits all the albums but two of my favorites in particular "Re
EXTD=main in Light" and "Fear of Music". The other CDs sound much, muc
EXTD=h better with the sound having greater clarity and better presenc
EXTD=e. While many of the bonus tracks having been previously released
EXTD= ("Sugar on My Tounge" and "Saxes and Violins" in particular) the
EXTD=re are some from the boxed set and two CD best of set that aren't
EXTD= on here. We do get early versions of "Road to Nowhere", "And She
EXTD= Was", an extended version of "Television Man","Two Note Swivel"
EXTD=(and unfinished outtake from "Speaking in Tongues"), "Burning Dow
EXTD=n the House" (Alternate version, three outtakes from "Remain in L
EXTD=ight", an acoustic "Psycho Killer", "Love-Building on Fire", "I F
EXTD=eel it in My Heart" and four alternate versions of tracks from "M
EXTD=ore". \n\nThe bad news--The CD side of "Fear of Music" won't play
EXTD= on a lot of computers and some CD players (evidently some home C
EXTD=D players as well) but that's not the case with all of these. I d
EXTD=idn't have any problems with the rest of the releases. I have wri
EXTD=tten Rhino to find out what they are going to do about the author
EXTD=ing problem for "Fear of Music" (which is why it won't play on a
EXTD=lot of devices). Once I hear back, I'll report if there will be a
EXTD= replacement disc issued. I haven't had problems with the CD side
EXTD= for any of the other discs and since I usually listen to the CD
EXTD=side in the car, that could be an issue (for more folks than me I
EXTD= might add). \n\n***Just an update--I contacted Rhino and there a
EXTD=re no plans to repress "Fear of Music" if there are problems with
EXTD= your CD player or computer. It appears the CD/DVD hybrid is not
EXTD=compatable with a lot of players. That's too bad as Rhino will pr
EXTD=obably lose a few sales due to this. Rhino plans on releasing the
EXTD=se titles individually in the Spring of 2006.*** \n\nThe CD artwo
EXTD=rk doesn't exactly duplicate the original albums or CDs themselve
EXTD=s. The discs are issued with a new booklet but the backside of th
EXTD=e holders are blank (as are the spines on the holders). Clearly t
EXTD=he holder was supposed to act as an "art object" (much as the lat
EXTD=est incarnation of the "Best of" with the large book is supposed
EXTD=to be a coffee table art book). Still, it would have been nice to
EXTD= have the option of knowing what CD you were pulling out of the c
EXTD=ase. \n\nThe DVD side has all eight albums remixed in 5.1 Dolby D
EXTD=igital Surround Sound by Head Jerry Harrison. There are also live
EXTD= video performances, videos, photo galleries and the like. Harris
EXTD=on does a great job in remixing the albums. The first album recor
EXTD=ded only in 16 track in particular sounds surprisingly strong in
EXTD=this incarnation. The best albums though in terms of sound are th
EXTD=ose involving complex arrangements or polyrhythmic interplay such
EXTD= as "Fear of Music", "Remain in Light", "Speaking in Tongues" and
EXTD= "Naked". That's not to say that albums like "Little Creatures" d
EXTD=on't sound great--they do and Harrison does a great job of remixi
EXTD=ng them it's just that in terms of textures and sonics those albu
EXTD=ms lend themselves well to the format. If you're watching TV whil
EXTD=e listening there is a single static graphic that appears on scre
EXTD=en (all of them quite interesting looking and featuring the unmis
EXTD=takable Heads arty bend)with the song title. No lyrics appear as
EXTD=you're watching the video (unlike, say, the "Crowded House" Duald
EXTD=isc release). It's kind of interesting to listen to the 5.1 mix i
EXTD=n stereo as well because different elements come out and are acce
EXTD=ntuated creating a slightly different mix to the sound. \n\nThe v
EXTD=ideos include live performances of the band (previously unrelease
EXTD=d on DVD) with the "Fear of Music" and "Remain in Light" material
EXTD= played by the augmented line up featuring guitarist Adrian Belew
EXTD= (their best line up in my opinion)doing "Cities", "I Zimbra" \n\n
EXTD=Each Dualdisc comes in a CD like case with a white plastic backin
EXTD=g. The titles of the CDs aren't on the individual holders which i
EXTD=s a bit of a pain. The booklets feature new photos, lyrics, comme
EXTD=nts from contemporaries (such as support member current King Crim
EXTD=son/Bear Adrian Belew and XTC's Andy Partridge). There's also min
EXTD=iature limited edition art prints that illustrate a song or lyric
EXTD= enclosed in the booklet. They are kind of small so be careful or
EXTD= you'll lose them. \n\nMy only complaint--I wish that all the"new
EXTD=" tracks from the two disc best of had been included as bonus tra
EXTD=cks on the discs or, at the very least, be included as a limited
EXTD=edition Dualdisc available as part of the package for "Brick". Ot
EXTD=her than that, Rhino has done a great job here. The outside packa
EXTD=ging featuring the titles of Talking Head songs is a hard plastic
EXTD= shell within which all the Dualdiscs fit. It's a bit bigger than
EXTD= a CD which makes it pretty easy to store with your other boxed s
EXTD=ets on a shelf or with other CDs. Kudos to Rhino and the Heads on
EXTD= such an excellent job with the remastering/packaging. \n\nAmazon
EXTD=.com Customer Review (''Brick'' box)\nThe double-edge of Dual Dis
EXTD=c..... ouch!, October 31, 2005\nReviewer: M. Svetinsky "MiroLab"
EXTD=(Los Angeles) \nI won't waste time commenting on the music here,
EXTD=cause if you are considering buying the Brick, you must be a fan
EXTD=already. Rather, I'll comment on the odd behaviours of these Dual
EXTD= Discs. \n\n1.) The CD side plays on only 1 of my 4 home players.
EXTD=.. a very old Sony changer, but they don't play on a newer Sony S
EXTD=ACD player, nor on my Marantz Universal player or Toshiba DVD pla
EXTD=yer. Strangely, I can play or rip the CDs in my Mac G5, and they
EXTD=do play in both my car players. \n\n2.) No Dolby Digital 5.1 trac
EXTD=ks. I am no fan of the sound of DD, but for people without DVD-Au
EXTD=dio players, you are out of luck on hearing the amazing 5.1 mixes
EXTD=. With other DualDiscs, i've been burned the other way.... only g
EXTD=etting a DolbyDigital 5.1 mix that sounds worse than the normal C
EXTD=D tracks. Dual Disc labelling is seriously misleading!! \n\n3.) T
EXTD=he DVD-Audio 5.1 mixes are truly amazing, in both mixing and soun
EXTD=d quality, but oddly, the center channel is out-of-phase with the
EXTD= Front Left & Rights. I have never heard this with any other 5.1
EXTD=DVD-A or SACD discs, so it is not a problem with my system. I fin
EXTD=d the sound to be much better with the center turned OFF, as the
EXTD=phase cancellation sucks the life out of the front channels. \n\n
EXTD=SO... the content is amazing, but Dual Discs are NOT. They are a
EXTD=cruel joke that i will continue to fall for whenever i see one th
EXTD=at I really really want. But if you have a DVD-A player, then you
EXTD= must hear these discs! \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review (''Brick''
EXTD= box)\nsimply spectacular!, October 7, 2005\nReviewer: F. Veldkam
EXTD=p (Netherlands)\nAll eight official Talking Heads studio albums a
EXTD=re collected here in a nice embossed plastic 'brick' on state-of-
EXTD=the-art DualDiscs. \n\nEach DualDisc contains a remastered stereo
EXTD= mix on one side and a 5.1 dolby surround (DVD-A) mix of the othe
EXTD=r side. Each side comes with different bonus tracks, varying from
EXTD= outtakes to remixes, music videos and rare live video footage. \n
EXTD=\nOf course, like with every boxset, the collection is not comple
EXTD=te - there are different alternate versions and outtakes on the p
EXTD=reviously released "Sand in the Vaseline" 2CD set and "Once in a
EXTD=Lifetime" boxset, but "Brick" offers a lot of new -and previously
EXTD= unreleased- material to keep you busy for a while. \n\nThe 5.1 s
EXTD=urround mix - done by longtime Talking Heads producer Eric 'E.T.'
EXTD= Thorngren and Heads' keyboard player Jerry Harrison - is by far
EXTD=the best surround mix I've ever heard. It beats 'new' surround al
EXTD=bums like the latest Beck and Bjork easily with an amazing mix th
EXTD=at puts you in the perfect spot with the band playing just in fro
EXTD=nt of you and effects (percussion!) haunting you from every corne
EXTD=r of the room. And it all sounds natural! Try anything from "Rema
EXTD=in in Light" or "Naked" (the bands most tense albums) in surround
EXTD= and you know what I mean. \n\nBut also the less complicated albu
EXTD=ms (Jerry added some nice linernotes on the 5.1 mixes to every al
EXTD=bum) sound spectacular in surround; it's unbelievable that everyt
EXTD=hing you hear now (handclaps, basslines, percussion, background v
EXTD=ocals, soundeffects) was on the original records when they were f
EXTD=irst recorded - A lot of details were inaudible on the vinyls and
EXTD= previous CD releases, so even for the die-hard fans (and I consi
EXTD=der myself one), there's a lot to explore on the new discs. \n\nE
EXTD=ach DualDisc comes with linernotes, lyrics and a limited edition
EXTD=artprint (mostly reproductions of works from Frank Olinsky's book
EXTD= "What the Songs Look Like). \n\nHighlights for me -besides redis
EXTD=covering the entire Talking Heads backcatalogue in glorious surro
EXTD=und sound and high-detailed stereo mixes- include old live video
EXTD=footage (a 3-piece Talking Heads with drummer Chris Frantz on Xyl
EXTD=ophone!), super-funky unreleased outtakes on "Remain in Light", e
EXTD=arly versions of classic hits like "Road to Nowhere" and "And She
EXTD= Was" and a special extended version of "Burning Down the House"
EXTD=in surround sound that was done especially for this release. \n\n
EXTD=The DualDisks are scheduled for seperate release in January 2006,
EXTD= but if you want them all, "Brick" is for you. \n\nHalf.com Album

EXTD=Point Studios, New Providence, Bahamas.\n\nReleased in late 2005,
EXTD= this formidable box set collects all eight Talking Heads studio
EXTD=albums, presenting each one in remastered DualDisc format, which
EXTD=allows for enhanced sound, bonus videos, and a slew of previously
EXTD= unreleased tracks. Given that the revered New York City proto-pu
EXTD=nk band's entire 1977-'88 catalogue was in need of a sonic upgrad
EXTD=e, BRICK is a heaven-sent for the group's fans. Frenetic art-funk
EXTD= classics like "Psycho Killer," "Life During Wartime," and "Burni
EXTD=ng Down the House" are recast in pristine audio, along with worth
EXTD=while outtakes like the Afro-beat homage "Fela's Riff" and the am
EXTD=bient, down-tempo "Double Groove." Although some listeners may be
EXTD= content with a less-comprehensive collection, for the Talking He
EXTD=ads diehard this set is essential.\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: (''True
EXTD=Stories'') Featuring songs written for David Byrne's film of the
EXTD= same name, True Stories is even more pop-oriented than Little Cr
EXTD=eatures, full of simple, catchy melodies and guitar hooks. Unfort
EXTD=unately, Byrne thinks pop should not only be simple, but simplist
EXTD=ic; too often, his genuinely engaging songs are weighed down by h
EXTD=is trite lyrics and condescending attitude. Fortunately, with the
EXTD=ir exceptional musical versatility, the rest of the band keeps th
EXTD=e album from being a complete failure. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine
EXTD=\n\nCMJ New Music Report (''True Stories'')\nThere has always bee
EXTD=n a cinematic quality to David Byrne's songs-couldn't you just pi
EXTD=cture "Life During Wartime" on the big screen? So it's perfectly
EXTD=natural that the `80s renaissance man should try his hand at film
EXTD=making. Advance reports on True Stories the film are very strong,
EXTD= reflecting Byrne's genius and wit. The songs, which are performe
EXTD=d by the actors themselves in the film (and will have their own s
EXTD=oundtrack) are done here by Talking Heads: True Stories the album
EXTD= is a joyous affair (Byrne says "Thanks, this was fun"), tossing
EXTD=aside more of the Heads' angst, which had been receding gradually
EXTD= anyway. The most exciting moment is in "Puzzlin' Evidence," when
EXTD= the driving Heads beat adds an equally forceful gospel chorus. O
EXTD=ur other favorites are "Love For Sale," "Hey Now" and "People Lik
EXTD=e Us." Talking Heads the band stands as one of the tightest, most
EXTD= consistently enjoyable pop groups working today, quietly expandi
EXTD=ng their frontiers and audience. \n 1978-1999 College Media, Inc
