EXTD=AMG EXPERT REVIEW: The British version of Aftermath was release
EXTD=d earlier than its American counterpart and had several differenc
EXTD=es beyond its cover design: it runs more than ten minutes longer,
EXTD=despite not having "Paint It Black" on it (singles were usually
EXTD=kept separate from LPs in England in those days), and it has four
EXTD=additional songs -- "Mother's Little Helper," which was left off
EXTD=the U.S. album for release as a single; "Out of Time" in its ful
EXTD=l-length five-minute-36-second version, two minutes longer than t
EXTD=he version of the song issued in America; "Take It or Leave It,"
EXTD=which eventually turned up on Flowers in the U.S.; and "What to D
EXTD=o," which didn't surface in America until the release of More Hot
EXTD=Rocks more than six years later. Additionally, the song lineup i
EXTD=s different, "Goin' Home" closing side one instead of side two. A
EXTD=nd the mixes used are different from the tracks that the two vers
EXTD=ions of the album do have in common -- the U.K. album and CD used
EXTD=a much cleaner, quieter master that had a more discreet stereo s
EXTD=ound, with wide separation in the two channels and the bass not c
EXTD=entered as it in the U.S. version. Thus, one gets a more vivid im
EXTD=pression of the instruments. It's also louder yet curiously, beca
EXTD=use of the cleaner sound, slightly less visceral in its overall i
EXTD=mpact, though the details in the playing revealed in the mixes ma
EXTD=y fascinate even casual listeners. It's still a great album, thou
EXTD=gh the difference in song lineup makes it a different record; "Mo
EXTD=ther's Little Helper" is one of the more in-your-face drug songs
EXTD=of the period, as well as being a potent statement about middle-c
EXTD=lass hypocrisy and political inconsistency, and "Out of Time," "T
EXTD=ake It Leave It" (which had been a hit for the Searchers), and "W
EXTD=hat to Do," if anything, add to the misogyny already on display i
EXTD=n "Stupid Girl" and "Think," and "Out of Time" adds to the florid
EXTD=sound of the album's psychedelic component (and there's no good
EXTD=reason except for a plain oversight by the powers that be for the
EXTD=complete version of "Out of Time" never having been released in
EXTD=America). The British version of Aftermath (which was also releas
EXTD=ed in mono on vinyl) has been available intermittently on CD sinc
EXTD=e the late '80s as an import, and is worth tracking down.
EXTD=
EXTD=[Th
EXTD=e Rolling Stones' London/ABKCO catalog was reissued in August of
EXTD=2002, packaged in digipacks with restored album artwork, remaster
EXTD=ed, and released as hybrid discs that contain both CD and Super A
EXTD=udio CD layers. The remastering -- performed with Direct Stream D
EXTD=igital (DSD) encoding -- is a drastic improvement, leaping out of
EXTD=the speaker yet still sounding like the original albums. This is
EXTD=noticeable on the standard CD layer but is considerably more pro
EXTD=nounced on the SACD layer, which is shockingly realistic in its d
EXTD=etail and presence yet is still faithful to the original mixes; K
EXTD=eith Richards' revved-up acoustic guitar on "Street Fighting Man"
EXTD=still sends the machine into overdrive, for instance. It just so
EXTD=unds like he's in the room with you. Even if you've never conside
EXTD=red yourself an audiophile, have never heard the differences betw
EXTD=een standard and gold-plated CDs, you will hear the difference wi
EXTD=th SACD, even on a cheap stereo system without a high-end amplifi

EXTD=an instant convert and wish, hope, and pray that other artists w

EXTD=The true start of the Stones' golden age (4.5 stars), June 2, 200
EXTD=5
EXTD=Reviewer: Allan Tong (Canada)
EXTD=I'll go out on a limb and propo
EXTD=se that the Golden Age of the Stones did not start with 1968's BE
EXTD=GGARS BANQUET, but with 1966's AFTERMATH (UK edition). Apart from
EXTD=the regrettable "Pepper" rip-off, SATANIC MAJESTIES, the Stones
EXTD=recorded an amazing run of music from 1966 through EXILE in 1972.
EXTD=
EXTD=AFTERMATH is the first album to feature entirely original songs
EXTD=. No blues or soul covers, but all Jagger-Richards compositions.
EXTD=In other words, the Stones find their voice -- a voice ringing wi
EXTD=th cynicism, tenderness, anger, frustration and yes, misogyny, bu
EXTD=t a voice that is uniquely their own.
EXTD=
EXTD=AFTERMATH is teeming wit
EXTD=h great songs, starting with Mother's Little Helper, which broke
EXTD=taboos in the mid-60s by talking about over-the-counter drug addi
EXTD=ction among American housewives. Brian Jones puts the sitar to si
EXTD=nister effect. Under My Thumb remains one of the Stones' best son
EXTD=gs, though its anti-women lyrics continue to rankle many. Out Of
EXTD=Time is one of the bands most haunting songs. Like Under My Thumb
EXTD=, Out of Time uses a new instrument, the marimba, to maximum effe
EXTD=ct. I Am Waiting and Lady Jane are two the Stones' most gentle ye
EXTD=t bittersweet tunes, highlighted by thoughtful lyrics. Overall, J
EXTD=agger and Richards' songwriting shines.
EXTD=
EXTD=Late 1965 and early 19
EXTD=66 was a fertile period for the Rolling Stones, who were The Beat
EXTD=les closest rivals. Consider that 19th Nervous Breakdown and Pain
EXTD=t It Black (which kicks off the US version of AFTERMATH) were rec
EXTD=orded at this time. Had these great singles and their B-sides rep
EXTD=laced weaker songs (What To Do, the 11-minute Goin' Home), then A
EXTD=FTERMATH may have attained the mythic status that BEGGARS enjoyed
EXTD=. (Hence, my 4.5-star reating instead of a full five.)
EXTD=
EXTD=Ignore
EXTD=the bastardized U.S. version and pick up this far superior versio
EXTD=n of AFTERMATH.

EXTD=Reviewer: Robert Weingartn
EXTD=er (Staten Island, New York United States)
EXTD=At last, the 14 song
EXTD=UK version of The Rolling Stones Aftermath. This is one of my fav
EXTD=orite Rolling Stones albums. It was a landmark album for the band
EXTD=as it was the first Rolling Stones album to consist of all origi
EXTD=nal Jagger/Richards material. The days of doing cover versions of
EXTD=other artist's songs were slowing down as the band was beginning
EXTD=to develop their own style and sound. With original hits over th
EXTD=e last 15 months such as "Heart Of Stone," "The Last Time," "(I C
EXTD=an't Get No) Satisfaction," and "Get Off Of My Cloud," Mick Jagge
EXTD=r and Keith Richards were developing into a very strong songwriti
EXTD=ng team. Besides Mick and Keith coming into their own as songwrit
EXTD=ers, Brian Jones was beginning to show his versatility as a music
EXTD=ian as he played several differernt instruments: Indian Sitar on
EXTD="Mothers Little Helper," marimbas (African xylophone) on "Under M
EXTD=y Thumb," "Out Of Time," and mountain dulcimer on "Lady Jane," "I
EXTD=Am Waiting," as well as harmonica "High And Dry," "Goin' Home,"
EXTD=and guitar and keyboards. The album also contains the 11-minute b
EXTD=lues jam "Goin' Home". The album was immediately praised as one o
EXTD=f their best albums and has remained a fan favorite from the Bria
EXTD=n Jones era. The album has some great pop tunes on it. Don't just
EXTD=judge the Rolling Stones by their radio hits, some of their stud
EXTD=io albums have a lot of hidden gems, and this album is one of the
EXTD=m. The sound has been greatly improved for SACD as part of ABKCO
EXTD=Records "Rolling Stones Remastered Series". I highly recommend th
EXTD=is album.
EXTD=HISTORICAL REFERENCE
EXTD=The album peaked at #1 in the U
EXTD=K. The Aftermath sessions also produced the hit singles "19th Ner
EXTD=vous Breakdown," and "Paint It Black" in the UK. Many songs on th
EXTD=is album were also covered by other British artists at the time l
EXTD=ike The Zombies, Chris Farlowe, The Searchers, and others. The 11
EXTD=-minute "Goin' Home" is what inspired The Doors to make their son
EXTD=g "The End" over 11-minutes long. The album was recorded entirely
EXTD=at RCA Studios in Hollywood, the same studio where Elvis Presley
EXTD=had once recorded, during two separate sessions, one in December
EXTD=1965 and the other in March 1966. It was also the first Rolling
EXTD=Stones album recorded entirely in the United States, and it was a
EXTD=lso the first album released in Stereo.

EXTD=A Slice Out Of Time, January 23, 2003
EXTD=Reviewer: Larry Will
EXTD=is (Phoenix, AZ United States)
EXTD=In 1966 sandwiched in between the
EXTD=two Beatles releases Rubber Soul and Revolver the Rolling Stones
EXTD=put out Aftermath. This was there first album of entirely origin
EXTD=al material and their strongest record to date. The first four so
EXTD=ngs are stones classics that anyone who cares is familiar with. I
EXTD=n these remastered versions the clarity is superb. Under My thumb
EXTD=and Lady Jane are especially nice on earphones where the clarity
EXTD=is stunning. Beyond The first four songs there are others on thi
EXTD=s record that could have been classics in another context. There
EXTD=are two fine rockers, Flight 505 and It's Not Easy. The softer tu
EXTD=nes I Am Waiting and Take It or Leave It. Out Of Time could have
EXTD=been a hit on it's own. The version of Out of Time on this disc,
EXTD=With all the Stones in place is much better than the one recorded
EXTD=by Jagger alone (as a demo for Chris Farlow) with the heavy orch
EXTD=estration. 1966 was a time of experimenting with exotic instrumen
EXTD=ts in rock and Brian Jones rose to the occasion bringing in sitar
EXTD=, dulcimer and marimbas.
EXTD=The only bad points to this disc is th
EXTD=at the song Going home does plod on a little long and Paint it bl
EXTD=ack wasn't included as a bonus track so one could resequence the
EXTD=order of the songs on your CD player to simulate the American ver
EXTD=sion. But then Alan Klein doesn't think like a fan but a sticky f
EXTD=ingered moneygrubber.
EXTD=On the front cover is the UK version desi
EXTD=gned by Andrew Oldham that Brian Jones hated on the inside flap i
EXTD=s the photo used on the American release but unfortunately it has
EXTD=been distorted from its original form.
EXTD=Much has been made of t
EXTD=he misogyny of the Stones lyrics. And they are in full form on ma
EXTD=ny of these tracks. At the time of this recording Jagger was in t
EXTD=he midst of his on again, off again tumultuous relationship with
EXTD=model Chrissie Shrimpton, a relationship that supplied a lot of f
EXTD=odder for his songs as, heard on this disc. Of Mick's relationshi
EXTD=ps with women Shrimpton said, "He would never let the woman be th
EXTD=e one to call things off." And of his misogyny, "Mick doesn't rea
EXTD=lly respect women...Mick doesn't like women. He never has." Mick
EXTD=was able to fire back in song. But then in Going Home he laments
EXTD="Maybe you think I've seen the world, but I'd rather see my girl.
EXTD=" The poor mixed up lad.
EXTD=This disc is a keeper, a true slice of
EXTD=swinging London in 1966.

EXTD=The Stones finally
EXTD=stopped filling half their albums with respectable R & B covers
EXTD=and turned in a brilliant mid-sixties masterpiece with "Aftermath
EXTD=". Okay, maybe not a MASTERPIECE in the sense of a "Let It Bleed"
EXTD=or "Exile", but pretty durn good nonetheless and their best albu
EXTD=m to date. The first side of this album is as strong as "Revolver
EXTD=" and I might even be inclined to argue that it's better. I'd buy
EXTD=this before Between the Buttons for sure. The album ends on a fl
EXTD=atulent note with the lame "What To Do" (which should have been a
EXTD=b-side) but everything else is top notch. The remastered sound q

EXTD=FINALLY - AFTERMATH AS IT WAS ORIGINALLY INTENDED, August 29, 200
EXTD=2
EXTD=Reviewer: Brian Christie (Montreal, Canada)
EXTD=On April 15, 1966
EXTD=, Decca Records in England issued The Rolling Stones' fourth UK a
EXTD=lbum - AFTERMATH. Featuring 14 tracks - for the first time all co
EXTD=mposed by Mick Jagger & Keith Richard, it was a # 1 smash and sho
EXTD=wed that The Stones were up to the challenge of The Beatles and R
EXTD=UBBER SOUL. What ultimately made it out in America that June was
EXTD=a very different version of this OFFICIAL and AUTHORITATIVE album
EXTD=. "Paint It Black" - just a single in the UK, was shoved on in th
EXTD=e place of "Mother's Little Helper" and then the US album was whi
EXTD=ttled down to a mere 11 tracks. DO NOT buy the US version - the m
EXTD=usic is great, of course, but it is not how The Rolling Stones an
EXTD=d producer Andrew Loog Oldham intended it to be. THIS, finally, i
EXTD=s the real article. For the time (1966), at 53 minutes, AFTERMATH
EXTD=was a very long album. The first half of it is like a greatest h
EXTD=its album ("Mother's Little Helper", "Stupid Girl", "Lady Jane",
EXTD="Under My Thumb" and the outstanding 11-minute blues work-out "Go
EXTD=in' Home". Brian Jones, picking up on George Harrison's use of th
EXTD=e sitar, began exploring exotic instruments and AFTERMATH benefit
EXTD=ed enormously from them. Sitars, marimbas and dulcimers abound he
EXTD=re and Mick & Keith made a real breakthrough songwriting-wise. "O
EXTD=ut Of Time" (in the second half) is also a compositional highligh
EXTD=t, though it is a bit long. However the last half does have its s
EXTD=omewhat average moments with mediocre tracks like "Take It Or Lea
EXTD=ve It", though they are still pleasant songs. But the majority of
EXTD=the winners are to be found in the first half of AFTERMATH and t
EXTD=hose tracks are the ones which has secured the album's enduring l
EXTD=egacy. Even with the odd moment of weakness, the overall effect o
EXTD=f the album is so strong that a 5 star rating is justified. Not T
EXTD=HE best Rolling Stones album, but a classic and their best THUS f
EXTD=ar. As songwriters, Mick & Keith never looked back after AFTERMAT
EXTD=H.

EXTD=It's difficult for American l
EXTD=isteners to remember this, but like the recordings of the Beatles
EXTD=and nearly all other British groups of the '60s, the Rolling Sto
EXTD=nes' first several albums did not make it across the Atlantic in
EXTD=one piece. Prior to ABKCO's comprehensive 2002 reissue program, t
EXTD=he US versions of the Stones' early albums were the de facto stan
EXTD=dards on CD, but particularly in the case of 1966's AFTERMATH, th
EXTD=e UK album was very different.
EXTD=The track lineup is shuffled and
EXTD=expanded to create a much different mood. "Paint It Black" is gon
EXTD=e, replaced as the opening track by the snotty social commentary
EXTD=of "Mother's Little Helper," which--when followed by "Stupid Girl
EXTD=," "Lady Jane," "Under My Thumb," and "Dontcha Bother Me"--is lik
EXTD=e a pentathlon of punky misogyny capped by the grinding blues jam
EXTD="Goin' Home." Side Two is more emotionally varied but just as mu
EXTD=sically far-reaching, adding the poppy "Take It Or Leave It" and
EXTD="What To Do" to an already strong set of tunes centered on the st
EXTD=unning full-length version of "Out of Time" that for some reason
