EXTD=\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: For the Hoodoo Gurus' third album, the group
EXTD='s American record label was hoping the band could come up with s
EXTD=omething a bit easier to market than the witty, '60s-obsessed pop
EXTD=/rock of Stoneage Romeos and Mars Needs Guitars, so they paired t
EXTD=he group up with producer Mark Opitz, who had previously twisted
EXTD=the knobs for AC/DC, INXS, and the Divinyls. Opitz gave the band
EXTD=a smoother, slicker surface and a cracking, radio-friendly drum s
EXTD=ound; he also weeded out the band's wackier material (nothing lik
EXTD=e "Dig It Up" or "Hayride to Hell" this time out) in favor of meg
EXTD=a-hooky pop ("Out That Door" and "Good Times," the latter featuri
EXTD=ng the Bangles on backing vocals) and straight-ahead rock & roll
EXTD=("Where Nowhere Is" and "Party Machine"). As a result, Blow Your
EXTD=Cool! is the least idiosyncratic album in the Hoodoo Gurus' catal
EXTD=og and doesn't reflect the sneaky wit or goofy charm that won the
EXTD=m many of their early fans. But it also makes them sound like the
EXTD= great rock & roll band they always were and leaves little doubt
EXTD=that these guys didn't need to be funny to get over; Dave Faulkne
EXTD=r even seems to enjoy having the opportunity to play it straight
EXTD=on the politically slanted "In the Middle of the Land," and the b
EXTD=and rarely rocked as hard as they did on the tunes here where the
EXTD=y throw the engine into fifth gear. Blow Your Cool! is in some re
EXTD=spects a compromised Hoodoo Gurus album, but it's strong enough t
EXTD=o prove that these guys could make a worthwhile album even while
EXTD=playing by someone else's rules. -- Mark Deming\n\nAMAZON.COM CUS

EXTD=wer: PJY "pjsailor" (Cumming, Ga USA)\nWithout a doubt, this is t
EXTD=he most gut wrenching, popped-up, agony induced CD ever produced.
EXTD= Sharp lyrics and driving guitars make this CD a classic. If you
EXTD=aren't singing the lyrics in a mock heart-felt rendition by the 3
EXTD=rd listening, something is wrong with you. This is one fine, fine
EXTD= CD. The opening song, "Out That door" is the perfect song crying
EXTD= out for lust lost. What follows are solid songs that will touch
EXTD=your heart. Now don't get me wrong, These are great pop/rock song
EXTD=s, but they, unlike most music today, have heart.\n\nAMAZON.COM C

EXTD=mpuserve.com (Germany)\nThis is one of the best Rock'n'Roll bands

EXTD= Gurus are one of the few Sixties-obsessed bands worth a damn. At
EXTD= the band's best, as on 1986's giddy Mars Needs Guitars!, songs l
EXTD=ike "Bittersweet" and "Like Wow -- Wipe-out" scorch with refreshi
EXTD=ng irreverence. Too many backward-looking bands tread lightly on
EXTD=their heroes; the Hoodoo Gurus rock out. Blow Your Cool is more o
EXTD=f the same, with all the growth you'd hope for from a developing
EXTD=band. Guitarist Brad Shepherd has expanded his vocabulary, and he
EXTD='s learned how to slip chunks of reverb into singer-guitarist Dav
EXTD=e Faulkner's songs and comment on them without being distracting.
EXTD= Bassist Clyde Bramley and drummer Mark Kingsmill consistently fi
EXTD=nd the appropriate mix of restlessness and support to kick the tr
EXTD=acks into fifth gear.\n\nThis is Faulkner's most consistent colle
EXTD=ction of songs yet. The breakup rocker "Out That Door," the bewil
EXTD=dered "What's My Scene," the poppy, forward-looking "Good Times"
EXTD=(featuring cushiony background vocals by the Bangles) and the rav
EXTD=ing put-down "Where Nowhere Is" all move briskly and unpretentiou
EXTD=sly. The Hoodoo Gurus are still an album or two away from breakin
EXTD=g out of their Sixties mold, but for now, hearing them mature at
EXTD=such a rapid pace is enough to blow your cool. (RS 501 -- Jun 4,
