EXTD= interwove with a hypnotic menace, providing a seductive backdrop
EXTD= for Jim Morrison's captivating vocals and probing prose. "Light 
EXTD=My Fire" was the cut that would top the charts and establish the 
EXTD=group as stars, but most of the rest of the album is just as impr
EXTD=essive, including some of their best songs: the propulsive "Break
EXTD= On Through" (their first single), the beguiling Oriental mystery
EXTD= of "The Crystal Ship," the mysterious "End of the Night," "Take 
EXTD=It As It Comes" (one of several tunes besides "Light My Fire" tha
EXTD=t also had hit potential), and the stomping rock of "Soul Kitchen
EXTD=" and "Twentieth Century Fox." The eleven-minute Oedipal drama "T
EXTD=he End" was the group at their most daring and, some would conten
EXTD=d, overambitious. It was nonetheless a haunting cap to an album w
EXTD=hose nonstop melodicism and dynamic tension would never be equale

EXTD=raves for the Los Angeles band: both for Jim Morrison's powerful

EXTD=on exuded both sensuality and menace. The mixture, on the outsize

EXTD=nd alienated, every element of the quartet's metier was unveiled 
EXTD=on their debut album. In Jim Morrison they posessed one of rock's
EXTD= authoritative voices, while the group's dense instrumental prowe
EXTD=ss reflected his lyrical mystery. Highly literate, they wedded Oe
EXTD=dipian tragedy with counter-culture nihlism and, in "Light My Fir
EXTD=e", expressed exotic images previously unheard in pop. Howlin' Wo
EXTD=lf, Brecht and Weill are acknowledged as musical reference points
