EXTD=Boris Ord was one of those rare musicians who became a legend in his lifet
EXTD=ime. His musical sympathies were wide: he spent a year working at the oper
EXTD=a in Cologne (his love of Boris Godunov giving friends the idea of replaci
EXTD=ng his real Christian name, Bernhard, with that by which he became univers
EXTD=ally known), and he was a pioneer in the early music movement, being a har
EXTD=psichordist of some distinction and, for example, performing 16th-century
EXTD=verse anthems with viols. He was one of the first 'cathedral' muscians to
EXTD=give priority to the training of his choir rather than to organ playing, f
EXTD=ine accompanist though he was. Happily, the fruits of his work were captur
EXTD=ed by the microphone. Only the superficial listener will fail to detect th
EXTD=e impassioned interpreter below the apparently cool surface of beautifully
EXTD= controlled timbres and blend, of exemplary intonation and ensemble. His w
EXTD=ork has had a deep influence on many generations of singers and choir dire
EXTD=ctors.
