EXTD=\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Long before Ted Nugent made his name as a mi
EXTD=ghty crossbow hunter, there was this heavy Detroit band in which
EXTD=he was content to play lead guitar, something he does very well a
EXTD=nd with much less threat to the Midwest's deer population. The Nu
EXTD=ge shouldn't try to take all the credit for this band, because th
EXTD=e other members such as vocalist John Drake and rhythm guitarist
EXTD=Steve Farmer contributed with great aplomb, the latter writing mu
EXTD=ch of the material on the second side's ambitious suite as well a
EXTD=s co-writing the title hit with Nugent. This is some hard-hitting
EXTD=, well-done psychedelic music, recorded with taste by a producer
EXTD=known much more for his work with mainstream jazz artists, Bob Sh
EXTD=ad. One thing that made the Amboy Dukes special was the amount of
EXTD= power and drive in their playing, something lacking in other psy
EXTD=chedelic outfits that take a more airy-fairy approach. The Nuge's
EXTD= guitar sound is recorded as if this was a mainstream jazz album
EXTD=by Harold Land, and it helps. -- Eugene Chadbourne\n\nAMAZON.COM
EXTD= CUSTOMER REVIEW\nok, they tried, October 31, 2006\nReviewer: . (
EXTD=Chicago, IL USA)\nIt seems as though the Amboy Dukes' faults, (an
EXTD=d they are,overall, lame), are looked at as relatively unimportan
EXTD=t because they supposedly launched the 'psychedelic' era. May I r
EXTD=emind those who make this claim that this was already 1968? (I'll
EXTD= even disregard the Beatles Easternisms and incredible studio eff
EXTD=ects for now.) The Yardbird's much superior 'psychedelic' work wi
EXTD=th Clapton, Beck and Page,(culminating with the still-amazing 'Ha
EXTD=ppenings Ten Years Time', featuring Beck-and-Page, in 1966!), had
EXTD= already given way to Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, the Jef
EXTD=f Beck Group, and Led Zeppelin. The Amboy Dukes were third genera
EXTD=tion and third rate, lightweight heavy music for teeny-boppers. N
EXTD=ow the boppers are middle-aged and want some respect for their fa
EXTD=ves,..sorry, no can do. \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nAs grea
EXTD=t as I remember!, May 7, 2004\nReviewer: pfsguy (Snellville, Ga U
EXTD=nited States)\nI had not heard this collection of music in over 2
EXTD=5 years and wondered if it just wasn't my youthful listening habi
EXTD=ts that made me think it was good music back then. But, no, these
EXTD= guys were just good, ahead of their time. The vocals and guitar
EXTD=are great, and the "journey" of blended songs on the second part
EXTD=of the CD is very well done. The lyrics are strange and sometimes
EXTD= meaningless, but that is what the 60's psychedelic music was all
EXTD= about, and the quality of the recording technique of instrument
EXTD=separation in the channels really makes it work. Shop around for
EXTD=a good price (under $20) and get this CD.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOME

EXTD=rch 25, 2003\nReviewer: JCB,HIFIGUY (Upstate N.Y. USA)\nThis Lp.
EXTD=shows the kind of regional-local talents around the USA that were
EXTD= pioneering hard rock music before the post Woodstock ultra-comme
EXTD=rcialization of the genre.While some of the songs may be a little
EXTD= sixties silly, the music, that is the playing, singing and arrag
EXTD=ements are quite good.It is great early hard rock without the "ca
EXTD=nned" sound formulated into so many bands since.(hey it's what mo
EXTD=st people want though)If you like heavy guitar/organ rock,this is
EXTD= an absolute must, and John Drakes powerful vocals are truly a hu
EXTD=ge part of the bands great sound.He left after the first 2 lps.,
EXTD=and the band was never again as good, in my opinion.Ted Nugents g
EXTD=uitar is perfect for the format they used as well.\n\n\nAMAZON.CO
EXTD=M CUSTOMER REVIEW\ncentering your mind, November 26, 2005\nReview
EXTD=er: D. Schmittdiel (Clinton Twp., MI)\nOn July 11 of 1968 I was t
EXTD=urning 14 years old, and the single 'Journey to the Center of the
EXTD= Mind' was number one on my favorite AM radio station, WKNR ('Kee
EXTD=ner13') in my hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Of course 'The Motor
EXTD= City Madman', Ted Nugent, and his Dukes had a decided edge in th
EXTD=eir own backyard, but the single did rise to number 16 on the nat
EXTD=ional charts also. I clearly remember that summer being deeply im
EXTD=pressed by the quality guitar work on several hit songs. At the s
EXTD=ame time 'Journey...' was claiming the top slot in Detroit, the S
EXTD=tones' 'Jumpin' Jack Flash' was resting at number 11, and Cream's
EXTD= 'Sunshine of Your Love' had retreated to number 27. But it was N
EXTD=ugent's guitar heroics that dazzled the most. Fortunate for mysel
EXTD=f, my older brother was working at McDonalds, and had brought hom
EXTD=e a vinyl copy of this, the Amboy Dukes (annotated as 'The Americ
EXTD=an Amboy Dukes' via a carrot insert on the cover) second album, f
EXTD=or my perusal. \n\nTed Nugent named his band after an R & B outfi
EXTD=t that had recently disbanded, saying "I thought it was a cool na
EXTD=me". He was unaware that 'The Amboy Dukes' was also the title of
EXTD=a book about a 1950's street gang from Perth Amboy, New Jersey. T
EXTD=ed has also claimed to be unaware that the lyrics to 'Journey...'
EXTD= had stong allusions to psychedelic drug use, as does the collect
EXTD=ion of vintage pipes on the album's cover. I tend to believe Ted
EXTD=when he claims to have never inhaled. I also regard Nugent as bei
EXTD=ng especially astute, and as a young man probably realized that u
EXTD=sing acid-tinged imagery would further the chances of success for
EXTD= a psychedelic rock band. For most of his associates however, bei
EXTD=ng in a psychedelic rock band must have implied psychedelic drug
EXTD=use, and this resulted in significant conflicts between the anti-
EXTD=drug Nugent and the remaining Dukes. \n\nIf you're still reading,
EXTD= you're probably wondering about the album itself. There aren't a
EXTD= whole lot of highlights, save the title track, which features on
EXTD=e of the finest electric guitar performances of the psychedelic e
EXTD=ra, matched by some of the finest psychedelic lyrics ever penned,
EXTD= matched by one of the heaviest bridge segments ever committed to
EXTD= vinyl, tape, or digital stock. Only three other songs really des
EXTD=erve mention, track number 5 (which closed out side one of the or
EXTD=iginal vinyl release), 'Dr. Slingshot', which features overlappin
EXTD=g vocal lines from lead singer John Drake and rhythm guitarist St
EXTD=eve Farmer (who, together with Nugent, penned all the songs on th
EXTD=e disc), and a great lead guitar riff from Nugent. Unfortunately,
EXTD= Nugent's talent on the six-string are only occasionally put on d
EXTD=isplay, such as on track 12, 'I'll Prove I'm Right', where his fi
EXTD=ne picking underlies another strong vocal performance from Drake.
EXTD= The band relies much more on the psychedelic imagery of its lyri
EXTD=cs rather than Nugent's axe, a highly questionable choice given t
EXTD=he quality of the lyrics (on 'Why Is a Carrot More Orange Than an
EXTD= Orange', for instance, we are offered other deep questions such
EXTD=as, "Why are you greener than green?"; go figure). If it's of int
EXTD=erest, the tracks on the second side of the disc segue into one a
EXTD=nother, and while the liner notes claim they collectively tell "a
EXTD= story", the plot is hard to discern. The final track, 'Conclusio
EXTD=n', does reintroduce the 'Journey...' melody, and for a few momen
EXTD=ts brings back Nugent's sterling guitar lines, but it's a case of
EXTD= too little too late. There is a bonus track offered on the Reper
EXTD=toire versions of the disc, the 7" follow up to 'Journey...', a s
EXTD=hameless ripoff of its predecessor titled 'You Talk Sunshine, I B
EXTD=reathe Fire'. Despite its obvious origins, it stands as perhaps t
EXTD=he fourth best track offered here. \n\nThe liner notes are rather
EXTD= sparse, although the reproduction of the original 1968 back albu
EXTD=m cover is interesting as it gives nods to "Felix and Eddie of th
EXTD=e Young Rascals" and "The Mothers of Invention" for their influen
EXTD=ce over the Dukes. No lyrics and no running times for the songs a
EXTD=re offered, though the track listings appear three times. The dis
EXTD=c is in short supply, so you won't be finding it in bargain bins.
EXTD= It commands a rather steep price, especially considering that it
EXTD= really contains only one standout song. Too bad it's one of the
EXTD=finest from 1968.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nWorse Than I R
EXTD=emembered - Which Is Not Much, September 7, 2001\nReviewer: A mus
EXTD=ic fan\nI grew up when the 'Dukes were around. I always loved 'Jo
EXTD=urney' but I never bought any of the Duke album - yes they were a
EXTD=ctually albums in those days. Now I know why. Ouch! Ted could smo
EXTD=ke on the guitar but the group as a whole pretty much comprehensi
EXTD=vely [stunk]. Compares to Hendrix? Hey give me some of that stuff
EXTD=. Anyway this CD is an interesting historical document in that it
EXTD= shows that my musical tastes were not as warped as the rest of m
EXTD=y mind back in those days. Now that I've ripped 'Journey' who wan
EXTD=ts a great deal on a very slightly used CD?\nNow how many of you
EXTD=- please raise your hands - really believe that Ted did not know
EXTD=that 'Journey' was a drug song? Sure Ted - there really is an Eas
EXTD=ter bunny, at least if you haven't blown off its head yet.\n\n\nA
