EXTD=MG EXPERT REVIEW: Talk about understatement -- there's Stephen St
EXTD=ills on the cover, acoustic guitar in hand, promising a personal
EXTD=singer/songwriter-type statement. And there is some of that -- ev
EXTD=en a lot of that personal music-making -- on Stephen Stills, but
EXTD=it's all couched in astonishingly bold musical terms. Stephen Sti
EXTD=lls is top-heavy with 1970 sensibilities, to be sure, from the de
EXTD=dication to the memory of Jimi Hendrix to the now piggish-seeming
EXTD= message of "Love the One You're With." Yet, listening to this al
EXTD=bum three decades on, it's still a jaw-dropping experience, the m
EXTD=usical equal to Crosby, Stills & Nash or Dj Vu, and only a shad
EXTD=e less important than either of them. The mix of folk, blues (aco
EXTD=ustic and electric), hard rock, and gospel is seamless, and the m
EXTD=usicianship and the singing are all so there, in your face, that
EXTD=it just burns your brain (in the nicest, most benevolent possible
EXTD= way) even decades later. Recorded amid the breakup of Crosby, St
EXTD=ills, Nash & Young, Stills' first solo album was his effort to pu
EXTD=t together his own sound and, not surprisingly, it's similar to a
EXTD= lot of stuff on the group's two albums. But it's also infinitely
EXTD= more personal, as well as harder and bluesier in many key spots;
EXTD= yet, it's every bit as soft and as lyrical as the group in other
EXTD= spots, and all laced with a degree of yearning and urgency that
EXTD=far outstrips virtually anything he did with the group. "Love the
EXTD= One You're With," which started life as a phrase that Stills bor
EXTD=rowed from Billy Preston at a party, is the song from this album
EXTD=that everybody knows, but it's actually one of the lesser cuts he
EXTD=re -- not much more than a riff and an upbeat lyric and mood, alb
EXTD=eit all of it infectious. "Do for the Others," by contrast, is on
EXTD=e of the prettiest and most moving pieces of music that Stills ha
EXTD=s ever been associated with, and "Church (Part of Someone)" showe
EXTD=d him moving toward gospel and R&B (and good at it, too); and the
EXTD=n there's "Old Times Good Times," musically as good a rock song a
EXTD=s Stills has ever recorded (even if it borrows a bit from "Pre-Ro
EXTD=ad Downs"), and featuring Jimi Hendrix on lead guitar. "Go Back H
EXTD=ome" (which has Eric Clapton on guitar) is fine a piece of bluesy
EXTD= hard rock, while "Sit Yourself Down" features superb singing by
EXTD=Stills and a six-person backing chorus (that includes Cass Elliot
EXTD=, Graham Nash, and David Crosby) around a great tune. "To a Flame
EXTD=" is downright ethereal, while the live "Black Queen" is a superb
EXTD= piece of acoustic blues. All of this is presented by Stills in t
EXTD=he best singing voice of his career up to that point, bolder, mor
EXTD=e outgoing, and more powerful (a result of his contact with Doris
EXTD= Troy) than anything in his previous output. He also plays lots o
EXTD=f instruments ( la Crosby, Stills & Nash, which is another reaso
EXTD=n it sounds so similar to the group in certain ways), though a bi
EXTD=t more organ than guitar, thanks to the presence of Hendrix and C
EXTD=lapton on two cuts. If the album has a flaw, it's the finale, "We
EXTD= Are Not Helpless," which slightly overstays its welcome. But hey
EXTD=, this was still the late '60s, and excess was the rule, not the
EXTD=exception, and it's such modest excess. -- Bruce Eder\n\nAmazon.c
EXTD=om Customer Review\na bit of everything and then some..., July 4,
EXTD= 2005 \nReviewer: D. Schmittdiel (Clinton Twp., MI) \nReleased in
EXTD= November of 1970, 'Stephen Stills' gave the artist his first opp
EXTD=ortunity to put out a work entirely his own. Nearly every selecti
EXTD=on is a classic in its own right, and each owes its success to pr
EXTD=evious eras in the artists development. \nStills hardly goes it a
EXTD=lone in this, his first 'solo' effort. Woodstock buddies David Cr
EXTD=osby and Graham Nash are along for the ride, providing backing vo
EXTD=cals on several songs. Big name guitarists Eric Clapton and Jimi
EXTD=Hendrix add energized lead solos on two numbers, and a host of bi
EXTD=g names such as Mama Cass Elliot, Rita Coolidge, John Sebastian,
EXTD=and Booker T. Jones make contributions. \n\nThere is substantial
EXTD=constrast between those songs featuring the then popular 'Wall of
EXTD= Sound' phenonenon, pioneered by Phil Spector, and those that don
EXTD='t. 'Love the One You're With', 'Cherokee', 'Sit Yourself Down',
EXTD=and 'We Are Not Helpless' are wall-to-wall knock-out bowl-you-ove
EXTD=r tsunamis of sound. Particularly appealing is the manner in whic
EXTD=h Still's lead guitar on 'Cherokee' seems to ride on top of, and
EXTD=all around, the brassy orchestrations, and the opening lyrics fro
EXTD=m 'Sit Yourself Down'... "When I get restless, what can I do, whe
EXTD=n I need someone, I think about you...". \n\nThree more atmospher
EXTD=ic numbers, 'Do For the Others', 'Church', and the lush 'To a Fla
EXTD=me' provide breathing room between the more bombastic tunes. On '
EXTD=Do For the Others', Stills harkens back to the debut CSN album, o
EXTD=verdubbing all the instruments and vocals by himself. In fact, on
EXTD= nearly all the songs, Stills contributes not only lead vocals, b
EXTD=ut at least two instruments. On 'Love the One You're With', he's
EXTD=playing guitars, organ, steel drum, and percussion. And 'Black Qu
EXTD=een' stands in stark contrast to everything else on the CD. Recor
EXTD=ded live, it featuring Stills and his acoustic guitar spitting an
EXTD=d grinding out the only blues number available here. \n\nThe two
EXTD=remaining songs, the autobiographical 'Old Times Good Times', and
EXTD= 'Go Back Home', are the hard rock contributions, featuring Hendr
EXTD=ix and Clapton respectively. Don't listen to anyone questioning t
EXTD=he intensity or quality of these lead guitar solos... both are ex
EXTD=traordinary, and Still's organ on 'Old Times Good Times', as well
EXTD= as his wha-wha on 'Go Back Home' perfectly complement everything
EXTD= else that is going on. Both of these songs are pure rock classic
EXTD=s, staples for any collector of all that was essential from this
EXTD=era of rock history. \n\nAside from Stills subsequent work with M
EXTD=anassas, and perhaps his eclectic 'Live' release in 1974, there i
EXTD=s no finer Stephen Stills collection available, and none of these
EXTD= songs are available on any other Stills recording, save compilat
EXTD=ions. It is an essential element of any comprehensive Stephen Sti
EXTD=lls collection. \n\nAmazon.com Editorial Review\nHe wasn't the mo
EXTD=st accomplished member of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young--or even o
EXTD=f Crosby, Stills &Nash, for that matter. But his songs are certai
EXTD=nly in a league with those of the other members, and it's chiefly
EXTD= on his solo albums that Stills's own personality comes through.
EXTD=Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth" belongs to Stills, wh
EXTD=ich shows where his influences lie. The hits "Love the One You're
EXTD= With" and "Sit Yourself Down," both of which live here, show how
EXTD= they developed. Sensitive? Lyrical? Not exactly. Think rugged de
EXTD=nim, an acoustic guitar, and a woman at home to sew on his appliq
EXTD=us and pick the seeds out of the pot. --Gavin McNett \n\nAmazon.

EXTD=iewer: Juan Mobili (Valley Cottage, NY USA)\nIt was the beginning

EXTD=verything it's realized perfectly, the soaring chorus and sweepin

EXTD=its own outer space, the sensuous cadence of "Sit Yourself Down;"
EXTD= the tequila-soaked blues of "Black Queen;" the quiet folk of wis

EXTD=ve time for Stephen Stills. In the first few years of the 1970s,
EXTD=he recorded two solo albums, released the superb Manassas double-
EXTD=album, and performed as part of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. N
EXTD=o one would expect a musician spreading himself so thin to be abl

EXTD=s STEPHEN STILLS-- yet that is exactly what Stills did. On this v
EXTD=aried set Stills's prodigious talent is laid bare, encompassing M
EXTD=emphis soul, folk, blues, gospel, rock, and good-time pop with a
EXTD=grace that equals anything in his discography.\n\nThe best-known
EXTD=cut here is the '70s radio staple "Love the One You're With," wit
EXTD=h its percolating percussion and free-love ethos. Equally arresti
EXTD=ng is "Black Queen," an acoustic guitar showcase allegedly record
EXTD=ed after Stills had downed a bottle of tequila. The gorgeous, sti

EXTD= of the instruments himself, but a star-studded guest list, inclu
EXTD=ding Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton (who plays lead on the bluesy "Go

EXTD=OLLING STONE REVIEW\nWell, we all know who Stephen Stills is, and
EXTD= we all know of his accomplishments with Buffalo Springfield and
EXTD=Crosby, Nash, and Young. Suffice it to say that this record is no
EXTD=wheres near as good as the former and, on the average, considerab
EXTD=ly better than the latter.\n\nBut I must have played this album a
EXTD= dozen times, and have yet to distinguish between the songs, whic
EXTD=h must either have identical tunes or be in the same key. I can b
EXTD=arely hear Jimi Hendrix' lead on "Old Times Good Times," although
EXTD= I've listened for it, and I didn't even bother to listen for Eri
EXTD=c Clapton's lead on "Go Back Home." Every single one of these com
EXTD=positions (with the notable exception of "Black Queen," which cer
EXTD=tainly doesn't stand up under repeated listenings) has an elusive
EXTD=, perhaps I should say evanescent quality to it. Sort of like the
EXTD= greased pig of carnival fame or the taste of Puerto Rican coconu
EXTD=t soda. Except the pig is most definitely there, even if nobody c
EXTD=an catch him, and I think that Coco Rico has a taste.\n\nSee Step
EXTD=hen sitting outside in the snow with his very expensive (Washburn
EXTD=?) guitar, playing for the multicolored ceramic giraffe. See Step
EXTD=hen, attired in polo shirt, perhaps playing polo. See the back co
EXTD=ver with the names of the 22 people who just happened to drop in
EXTD=to the recording session. Names all of them, of course, either be
EXTD=cause they are or by association with those who are.\n\nRemember
EXTD=the days when a group broke up because one of the guys got drafte
EXTD=d or killed? Remember the days when the word superstar was a cyni
EXTD=cal title Andy Warhol would give to his actors who didn't have to
EXTD= act? I still go for the sentiment expressed on a sign that I hea
EXTD=r he has up at the Factory: In The Future, Everybody Will Be Famo

EXTD= Four comic book and asked how Mr. Fantastic kept from stretching
EXTD= himself so thin that he'd snap? Does anybody out there remember
EXTD=the answer?\n\nI'm not saying that I don't like this album. I put
EXTD= it on, my mind goes and wanders. I find myself tapping my foot.
EXTD=I admire little production techniques here and there, I think tha
EXTD=t "Love The One You're With" will make a killer single. But when
