EXTD=7\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Next to Amy Grant, Sam Phillips may very
EXTD=well be the best example of a Christian female pop-rocker success
EXTD=fully making the transition from Christian to secular audiences i
EXTD=n the 1980s. When The Turning first came out on Myrrh in 1987, Ph
EXTD=illips was still going by the name Leslie and was being marketed
EXTD=primarily as a Christian singer. But when DCC reissued this album
EXTD= on CD ten years later, the label went with the name for which sh
EXTD=e was best known, Sam Phillips. In 1987, she sort of sounded like
EXTD= a cross between Grant and the Go-Gos. Musically, it's hard not t
EXTD=o overlook the parallels between "Love Is Not Lost," "Beating Hea
EXTD=rt" and other appealing tunes that draw on the 1960s girl-group s
EXTD=ound in a Go-Gos-ish fashion. But lyrically, Phillips' songs spea
EXTD=k of a search for meaning and purpose that has a lot more in comm
EXTD=on with Grant -- or, for that matter, Bono & U2. Although Phillip
EXTD=s is coming from a Christian perspective, her lyrics are neither
EXTD=offputting nor exclusionary. Even if you're firmly committed to J
EXTD=udaism, Hinduism or Islam, you can relate to the spiritual messag
EXTD=e of "Answers Don't Come Easy" and "River of Love." Those who dis
EXTD=covered Phillips with Cruel Inventions or Martinis & Bikinis woul
EXTD=d do well to go back and acquire this superb album. -- Alex Hende
EXTD=rson, All Music Guide\n\nAmazon.com Editorial Review\nOriginally
EXTD=issued under the name Leslie Phillips (this intriguing singer-son
EXTD=gwriter's given name--the one that earned her a large Christian f
EXTD=ollowing in the mid '80s), this 1987 title is aptly named. The Tu
EXTD=rning has one foot in Phillips's devotional-music past and the ot
EXTD=her in her secular future. The Southern Californian wasn't intere
EXTD=sted in abandoning her beliefs during this transitional phase; ra
EXTD=ther, she was disenchanted with the more doctrinaire elements of
EXTD=the Christian-music industry. Thus, songs that would've fit on he
EXTD=r earliest recordings ("God Is Watching You," "Answers Don't Come
EXTD= Easy") mingle with idiosyncratic pop songs. This 10-song set mar
EXTD=ks Phillips's first collaboration with her future husband, T Bone
EXTD= Burnett, who contributes suitably adventurous production (listen
EXTD= to the Buddy Holly-inspired minimalism of "Libera Me" and the lo
EXTD=vely "River of Love." The Turning isn't quite on a par with Phill
EXTD=ips's ensuing albums on Virgin, but it's nevertheless a striking
EXTD=step forward by an artist ascending. --Steven Stolder \n\n\nAMAZO
EXTD=N.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nIt was a turning, June 16, 2006\nReviewer:
EXTD= Anthony J. Harkin "Major Tony" (TX)\n\nWhen Leslie became Sam, w
EXTD=hen the lyrics appealed to the masses, there was a 'turning'. The
EXTD= same thing happened to Amy Grant of "My Father's Eyes", she was
EXTD=a seed that fell on the shallow soil, immediately sprung up, then
EXTD= withered in the sun. Face it, she chucked her faith. Leslie/Sam
EXTD=quickly distanced herself from Christianity. I don't even see it
EXTD=as fence straddling, but hopping over the fence and not looking b
EXTD=ack at her Christian past. Some folks are hanging onto vague allu
EXTD=sions to Christianity, but face it- it's not there. \n\n\nAMAZON.
EXTD=COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nDon't Be Afraid of This CD!!!, June 9, 2003\n
EXTD=Reviewer: Brian Bateman "batmansbrb" (Seymour, IN United States)\n
EXTD=This was Sam "Leslie" Phillips last Christian release on her Chri
EXTD=stian label. But, don't let that scare you away. This was a very
EXTD=controversial release and was praised highly by secular critics.
EXTD=It was controversial at the time because the word "God" is only m
EXTD=entioned in one song (which really upset many Christians). At the
EXTD= time this came out (1987), Christian music was void of artistic
EXTD=music... everything sounded the same and very bland. "Leslie" mad
EXTD=e a decision to leave the industry with this release and decided
EXTD=to go out with a no-holds barred, brutally honest and heart-felt
EXTD=bang. This is our first glimpse into the wonderful artist known a
EXTD=s "Sam Phillips". The music is very minimal, but that is a good t
EXTD=hing. With the help of her future husband, T Bone Burnett, this C
EXTD=D is still regarded as one of the best Christian releases ever -
EXTD=despite the backlash from Christians. Up until this time, I had n
EXTD=ever heard such originally sounding music. This CD is an acoustic
EXTD=al masterpiece... there is nothing here that is preachy at all, i
EXTD=t's just spiritual - something everyone can relate to whether you
EXTD='re a Christian or not. "The Turning" is the gem here; as well as
EXTD= "Libera Me" - whose main instrument is a rhythmic hand clap. "Ex
EXTD=pectations" shows her frustrations with her Christian label not a
EXTD=llowing her to sing about certain subjects: "You lock me up with
EXTD=your expectations, loosen the pressure you choked me with, I can'
EXTD=t breathe!". I absolutely love "Down", which is a self re-examina
EXTD=tion of your belief systems, "Cut to the heart I am opened up lik
EXTD=e a wound - shattered convictions I thought were reflecting You".
EXTD= The real interesting song here is "Answer's Don't Come Easy", wh
EXTD=ich is a song about unanswered prayers. But, musically, it is ver
EXTD=y eclectic. If you are a big fan of Sam Phillips, but have been h
EXTD=olding out on this one, don't be afraid of it. It is a masterpiec
EXTD=e of music and lyrics and regardless of your faith, it is relatab
EXTD=le to all and it will be interesting for you to see the beginning
EXTD= transformation from Leslie Phillips to Sam Phillips.\n\n\nAMAZON
EXTD=.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nThe Turning from Light to Shadow, April 22,
EXTD= 2002\nReviewer: Robin McDonald (USA)\nI was talking to a friend
EXTD=at a camp and said I wish I knew some other good Christian music
EXTD=besides Amy Grant. He asked if I knew Leslie Phillips and I said
EXTD=yes. He didn't know I meant I went to high school with her and I
EXTD=didn't know she was a singer. Actually I had heard her sing but d
EXTD=idn't know she had albums. So he recommended a couple albums and
EXTD=one was "The Turning"....The Turning was really good and I like t
EXTD=he short review that said simply that this was one of the more ho
EXTD=nest Christian albums they have heard. And I like it because it r
EXTD=eflects a longing for faith but also the strangling effect of bei
EXTD=ng a Christian Artist. She sings pointedly about how the communit
EXTD=y applies pressure to say the "right" things in her music. "You L
EXTD=ock me up with your expectations... Loosen the pressure you choke
EXTD= me with...I can't breathe...I can't breathe." That's a pretty he
EXTD=avy point blank shot at a sector of the often critical Christian
EXTD=music buying public who don't like it when the songs depart from
EXTD=the expected praise and worship. Clearly this is a goodbye album
EXTD=to the Christian community filled with fond rememberances and fru
EXTD=stration. For that alone it is pretty fascinating. But musically
EXTD=it is really a lushly recorded rich accoustic experience with som
EXTD=e nice haunting percussion. "The Turning" is aptly named. At some
EXTD= point a lot of Christians come to a point where they have to say
EXTD= to the Christian Community. This album says "I love you but it h
EXTD=urts too much to stay with you anymore. I can't squeeze into what
EXTD= you want me to be." Its dark and a little sad, but if you have b
EXTD=een there and felt the feelings, this CD might resonate with you.
EXTD=\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nThe (incredible) Turning., Augu
EXTD=st 12, 2001\nReviewer: Eden512 "eden512" (Fort Worth, TX)\nThe fo
EXTD=llowing review may suprise some readers. I first heard about "The
EXTD= Turning" at a Christian concert by Randy Stonehill in 1987. Ston
EXTD=ehill previously toured the christian music circuit of churches,
EXTD=coffe houses etc, with Phillips and spoke well of her. Through hi
EXTD=s label he was able to hear some pre released cuts. He had the op
EXTD=portunity to tell the audience about very lovely album (then unti
EXTD=tled) but to be released by then "Leslie Philips" and went on to
EXTD=describe the songs from "The Turning". I was excited, because I h
EXTD=ave been an avid "Phillips" fan since 1982, However the transitio
EXTD=n from her "Black and White in a grey world" album to "The Turnin
EXTD=g" was monumental. I did not reject it but was thrilled that the
EXTD=Word Records (a christian label) would turn out an album of such
EXTD=a fine caliber. Word execs were proud even creating a radio speci
EXTD=al promoting it. CCM (Contemporary Christian Magazine) still tout
EXTD=s "The Turning" as one of the top 10 important albums in Christia
EXTD=n Music. If Sam left Christian Music due to unacceptance of her n
EXTD=ew artistry, it sure was not apparent by music insiders & fellow
EXTD=CCM artists. They Loved it and still do! Infact , Last year in 20
EXTD=00, Word and Family Christian stores re-released "The Turning" as
EXTD= Leslie Phillips with the original cover art. Also re-released a
EXTD=few years ealier was Phillips 1982's "Beyond Saturday Night" whic
EXTD=h is not your typical CCM album either. It deals with Death, ange
EXTD=r, fustration of mortality with no easy answers with the vocal po
EXTD=wer not seen since Pat Benatar. BSN also includes a cover of Mark
EXTD= Heards "Heart of Hearts". As a commited Christian, I would highl
EXTD=y recommend "The Turning". It is one of the most beautiful & hone
EXTD=st albums you will hear. T-bone's composition of "River of Love"
EXTD=is perfect. I love the stereo experimentality in "Libera Me". PS.
EXTD= Also check out Randy Stonehills "Hunger and Thrist" another well
EXTD= written album I have found that other sam fans enjoy.\n\n\nAMAZO
EXTD=N.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nThis IS Sam's Turning point....., March 29
EXTD=, 2001\nReviewer: D. P. Wolfe "- Music Lover" (Littleton, CO Unit
EXTD=ed States)\n\nBefore she was Sam, she was Leslie. One of the darl
EXTD=ing girls of the Christian music industry. But Sam was always the
EXTD=re, trying to sneek out. There are moments of Sam Phillips on all
EXTD= of her albums - stuffed inbetween the sugar coated pop songs the
EXTD= CCM folks insisted she do(Powder Room Politics....yuck....). The
EXTD= Leslie dropped the bomb, and aptly named it 'The Turning'. \n\n'
EXTD=The Turning' is everything that Sam was not allowed to do before.
EXTD= How she snuck this gem past the CCM machine is one of the great
EXTD=mysteries of life. However she managed, we all benefited. This is
EXTD= one powerful album. The production work done by T-Bone Burnett i
EXTD=s stunning in its restraint. Nothing more than the bare bones nee
EXTD=ded to hang the lyric on is included in the music. 'River of Love
EXTD=', which was written by T-Bone is redone here by Sam with 1 vocal
EXTD= - 1 guitar and is simply perfect. Between Sam and T-Bone they se
EXTD=emed to have pared each song down so nothing more nor less is app
EXTD=lied to each song than exactly what the song demanded. \n\n\nLyri
EXTD=cally, this album is the perfect bridge between Leslie and Sam. C
EXTD=hristianity is here in big bold letters...but they are letters of
EXTD= Sam's own choosing. This album was Sam's goodbye to the CCM indu
EXTD=stry and an intro to her 'secular' career to come. Personally, I
EXTD=have always felt that this was where Sam needed to stay. None of
EXTD=her subsiquent albums have moved me the way this album has. And n
EXTD=one of her previous ones either. This CD is seldom far from my CD
EXTD= players and has long been one of my favorite albums. Thanks Lesl

EXTD=r 8, 2000\nReviewer: Eik Nyl "E"\n\nI bought this album because I
EXTD= was a big fan of Sam Phillips' later works. I knew of her Christ
EXTD=ian music past, but I had never heard any of her overtly Christia
EXTD=n music. This album walks the fine line between mainstream music
EXTD=and Christian music. (This is not to classify Christian music, fo
EXTD=r any devoted Christians reading this) as outside the mainstream.
EXTD= Simply not top 40 usually. This album is beautiful no matter who
EXTD= you are or what your spiritual persuasions are. The most powerfu
EXTD=l track is "River of Love"... although the first four songs here
EXTD=are magnificent and full of life and depth. Phillips makes refere
EXTD=nces that are deliberately subtle and while they question faith a
EXTD=nd spirituality, the songs do so in a universal way, so no listen
EXTD=ers would find themselves alienated. Phillips has a very inclusiv
EXTD=e and open musical style which rates her high in the accessibity
EXTD=department at least for "thinking" music fans. You will not be di
EXTD=sappointed with this offering, particularly when you hear "River
EXTD=of Love" and "Libera Me". Gorgeous.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVI

EXTD= REVIEW\nDeliberate Ambiguity, May 28, 2000\nReviewer: John Sulli
EXTD=van (Denver, Colorado) \nIf you were a fan of Ms. Phillips' other
EXTD= work in contemporary Christian music, this album may have been u
EXTD=nsettling. She keeps almost, but not quite communicating truths t
EXTD=hat had been spelled out clearly in her previous three efforts in
EXTD= the gospel genre.\nInstead she creates a provocative tension, in
EXTD= songs like "Answers Don't Come Easy," "Beating Heart," and "The
EXTD=Turning." she turns the tables on the listener. She seems to be s
EXTD=aying that the Truths of the Christian faith are evasive and hard
EXTD= learned. And whenever you think you know them perfectly, the "tu
EXTD=rning" of life circumstances comes around and you learn once agai
EXTD=n that while God's love is perfect, comprehending it, in all of i
EXTD=ts facets is impossible. The CD's mood is melancholy, with the ed
EXTD=gy mark of her (now) husband T-Bone Burnett in the under-produced
EXTD= (especially for the 80's) compositions. \n\nI rate this as one o
EXTD=f her best CD's, both because of the haunting melodies/profound l
EXTD=yrics, and because Ms. Phillips took a huge commercial risk in sp
EXTD=eaking her heart through artistic passion and not simply often re
EXTD=peated simplistic religious platitudes.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER
