EXTD=Stop The Clocks - Disc 1 of 2\n2006 Columbia\n\nOriginally Releas
EXTD=ed November 21, 2006\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: A young Noel Gallagher
EXTD= at the height of Oasis' popularity in the mid-'90s declared that
EXTD= the band would not release a compilation CD until the end of the
EXTD=ir career, since such compilations implied that a band's career w
EXTD=as indeed over. A decade later, an older, presumably wiser Gallag
EXTD=her realized that if you're about to leave your longtime label an
EXTD=d that label will release a compilation whether you participate o
EXTD=r not, it's better to write your own draft of your band's history
EXTD= than having the label do it for you. And so, Gallagher designed
EXTD=the first Oasis hits compilation, 2006's double-disc, 18-track St
EXTD=op the Clocks. As he so often has done in his career, he looked t
EXTD=o the Beatles for guidance, choosing their two 1973 hits comps 19
EXTD=62-1966 and 1967-1970 -- better-known as The Red Album and The Bl
EXTD=ue Album -- as a template for Stop the Clocks. Those records mixe
EXTD=d up hits with album tracks and B-sides to offer an overview of t
EXTD=he band's identity, and so it is with Oasis' double-disc set, as
EXTD=it overlooks big hits -- "Roll with It," "D'You Know What I Mean,
EXTD=" "Stand by Me" -- in favor for things that were tucked away on a
EXTD=lbums or singles. Where the Beatles albums sampled more or less e
EXTD=qually from each phase of their career, Gallagher is a bit more r
EXTD=uthless in rewriting his own history, thoroughly excising 1997's
EXTD=Be Here Now from the band's past -- an overreaction that's nevert
EXTD=heless perfectly in line with everything regarding their overblow
EXTD=n third album.\n\nSuch fits of pique are typical for Gallagher an
EXTD=d Oasis -- which at the time of the release of Stop the Clocks ha
EXTD=d only his brother Liam as the other remaining original member --
EXTD= and another is the exclusion of the non-LP Christmas 1994 single
EXTD= "Whatever," omitted presumably because if it was here the band w
EXTD=ould have to shell out royalties to David Bowie. But even if "Wha
EXTD=tever" is missed along with such other great singles both early (
EXTD="Shakermaker") and late ("The Hindu Times"), Stop the Clocks work
EXTD=s at its most basic level: it offers an excellent primer to Oasis
EXTD= at their best. Of course, this means that it draws very heavily
EXTD=on the glory days of 1994-1996, offering five tracks each from De
EXTD=finitely Maybe and (What's the Story) Morning Glory, plus various
EXTD= B-sides from this era. All in all, a whopping 15 of the 19 track
EXTD=s here date from this time, and the four songs that do come from
EXTD=the 21st century -- "Lyla," "The Importance of Being Idle," "Go L
EXTD=et It Out," "Songbird" -- more than hold their own since they rel
EXTD=y on what has always been their strengths: sturdy classicist song
EXTD=writing and spirited performances. And that's why Oasis' best mus
EXTD=ic has dated very well: anything with such aspirations to be clas
EXTD=sic lives and dies by the strength of their material, and this ma
EXTD=nages to capture its time and transcend it, since its attitude re
EXTD=mains potent, and the songs sound as good hundreds of times after
EXTD= their fist spin. No, even at two discs Stop the Clocks doesn't c
EXTD=ontain all of the best of Oasis, but it does contain Oasis at the
EXTD=ir best and enough of it that it can indeed be passed along to fu
EXTD=ture generations as an introduction to one of the best bands of t
EXTD=heir time, just like how the Red and Blue albums converted many y
EXTD=oung listeners to the Beatles. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine\n\nAma
EXTD=zon.com Editorial Review\nEven the high-and-mighty Gallagher brot
EXTD=hers would admit that Oasis hasn't released a crucial album since
EXTD= the one-two punch of its 1994 debut, Definitely Maybe, and its g
EXTD=lobe-devouring 1995 follow-up, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?.
EXTD= But that doesn't mean the hirsute Manchester band has been in sh
EXTD=ort supply of great singles. With just Liam and Noel sticking it
EXTD=out through the whole thing, this generous double album cherry-pi
EXTD=cks the best riffs, choruses, and sneers from the group's decade-
EXTD=plus career, offering fans a chance to rediscover early pub class
EXTD=ics ("Slide Away," "Some Might Say"), latter-day retro-rock gems
EXTD=("The Importance of Being Idle," "Lyla"), and some surprisingly d
EXTD=ecent B-sides that could have otherwise easily been obscured by t
EXTD=he eyebrows ("The Masterplan"). --Aidin Vaziri \n\n\nAMAZON.COM C

EXTD=uary 17, 2007\nReviewer: J. Henry "Loungepop" (California)\n\nI b
EXTD=ecame an Oasis fan on the first listen of a "white label demo" of
EXTD= a song called Columbia in 1994. I didn't know then that this ban
EXTD=d would be the most influencial, important band of my lifetime. G
EXTD=rowing up with Nirvana and the grunge scene in America brought me
EXTD= to be greatly effected by the sudden impact of the self-assured
EXTD="Get Up Off The Floor And Believe In Life" idea of Oasis. America
EXTD=n's didn't find out about Oasis until their second album, and the
EXTD=ir only exposure was the Wonderwall & Champagne Supernova videos
EXTD=where Liam Gallagher wore round "Lennon" sunglasses. With this, A
EXTD=merica missed the entire life-changing charisma of Definitely May
EXTD=be and the masterpieces found throughout the rest of every album
EXTD=and every single with b-sides to follow. \n\nAnyone who says they
EXTD= dislike Oasis is only familiar with Wonderwall & Champagne Super
EXTD=nova and say they dislike the "attitudes". Nevermind that Oasis s
EXTD=ingle-handedly changed the way an entire generation of listeners
EXTD=approached their own lives by writing astonishing songs that made
EXTD= you feel invincible. Forget "Rape Me" or "I Hate Myself & I Want
EXTD= To Die", Oasis are about making the most out of life and not was
EXTD=ting a single second. It's there in the lyrics, in the Marshall S
EXTD=tacks & Les Pauls, and in the melodys that will never grow tired.
EXTD= \n\nI'd rate this album a 10 out of 10 were in not for one glari
EXTD=ng ommision... not a single song from the 3rd album, Be Here Now.
EXTD= Noel Gallagher has become ashamed of this album over time due to
EXTD= the reviews recieved upon release as an overblown record with to
EXTD=o many long songs. Well, having been there from the beginning, I'
EXTD=d say Be Here Now is my favorite Oasis record, primarily due to t
EXTD=he fact that it's the sound of the summer of 1997. Big and exciti
EXTD=ng, and almost constantly rocking, Be Here Now warranted at least
EXTD= 1 track on Stop The Clocks and it could have featured 3 or 4. Do
EXTD=n't Go Away is to me the single most beautiful Oasis song and sho
EXTD=uld have been among the first 3 or 4 Noel chose for Stop The Cloc
EXTD=ks. Meanwhile, D'You Know What I Mean? is the single most exhilir
EXTD=ating Oasis song ever released and would have added to the track
EXTD=listing as the most interesting and self assured track on Stop Th
EXTD=e Clocks. With 9 songs on each disk, the inclusion of these two t
EXTD=racks would have made it my dream Oasis "Best Of" rounding it out
EXTD= at 10 tracks per disk and making for a more complete Oasis overv
EXTD=iew. Other than that, it's still a fantastic document of the most
EXTD= important rock & roll band of the last 30 years.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM

EXTD=06\nReviewer: S. Sarhan "matured reviewer" (Dearborn, Michigan Un
EXTD=ited States)\n\nStop the Clocks deserves the respect of hardcore
EXTD=fans and past fans of Oasis. The band has been making music for t
EXTD=he past 12 years, haven't lost their touch, haven't sold out to m
EXTD=ake pop or rap, and, after 12 years, still revolve around the onc
EXTD=e-known-to-be fueding brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher, the voice
EXTD= and soul behind one of the most exciting and unpredictable bands
EXTD= in recent memory. \n\nClocks delivers a retrospective of Oasis's
EXTD= bumpy career thus far. To no surprise, most of the songs, which
EXTD=were all compiled by the Gallaghers themselves as songs that, acc
EXTD=ording to them, encapsulate their band's best contributions to mo
EXTD=dern rock over the past decade, are from their first two albums:
EXTD=Rock 'n Roll Star, Live Forever, Supersonic, and Slide Away from
EXTD=the 1994 breakthrough debut Definitely Maybe; Some Might Say, Won
EXTD=derwall, Don't Look Back In Anger, Morning Glory and Champagne Su
EXTD=pernova from the 1995 mega hit follow-up What's The Story Morning
EXTD= Glory. Other classic hits include the UK number 1 hit Go Let It
EXTD=Out from 2000's dud Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants, the Liam
EXTD=penned ballad Songbird from 2002's subtle Heathen Chemistry, and
EXTD=the UK number 1 hits Lyla and Importance of Being Idle from 2005'
EXTD=s solid Don't Believe The Truth. The boys even manage to thrown i
EXTD=n 4 great b-sides, which sound better than most of the singles th
EXTD=ey've released to date: the brilliantly written acoustic ballad T
EXTD=alk Tonight, the sentimental The Masterplan, the arena rocker Acq
EXTD=ueisce, and the stunning Half The World Away. \n\nThe only flaw I
EXTD= find on the compilation is the title: Stop The Clocks is a song
EXTD=Noel has been writing, rewriting, recording and re-recording over
EXTD= the past 5 years; someway, somehow, it would have been nice to h
EXTD=ave this song included on the compilation instead of causing some
EXTD= sort of confusion, and even misleading some music-goers to the c
EXTD=ontent of the album, but that's Noel Gallagher for you! \n\nBesid
EXTD=es that, both the collection of classics and the band still rock
EXTD=on! \n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nA Compilation - Not a Great

EXTD= tracks as chosen by the band themselves - the songs they believe
EXTD= encapsulate their remarkable career to date." For many though, o
EXTD=mitting all these tracks (no less than 3 number one hits) is rath
EXTD=er excessive. Actually, this track list would make most bands pro
EXTD=ud of their achievement. Usually when tracks are omitted on such
EXTD=greatest hits compilations, those are one or two songs the band j
EXTD=ust simply hate (case in point is the recent R.E.M. In Time compi
EXTD=lation which skips Shiny Happy People) or more often minor hits o
EXTD=r known album tracks. Not one track from Be Here Now is included
EXTD=but over half of the tracks here are from their first two release
EXTD=s, incidentally the albums most people already own. \n\nThis is n
EXTD=ot to say that the songs on this compilation are not superb, they
EXTD= are. On that strength I give this set 4 stars (I am probably gen
EXTD=erous). There should, however, be a warning sticker on this relea
EXTD=se stating that this is merely a compilation, nothing more. An al
EXTD=arming case in point is the track Whatever, which has only been a
EXTD=vailable as a single. This begs the question, why is there not a
EXTD=double CD version of this release? Ooops, actually this is a doub
EXTD=le CD release with simply very few songs on each CD compared to t
EXTD=he compilation norm. Maybe this is some kind of retro attempt. In
EXTD= the age of programmable music, I'd rather be able to edit my mus
EXTD=ic down to my personal choices of nine songs as opposed to being
EXTD=limited in that option. \n\n\nHalf.com Album Notes\nAlthough long
EXTD=-players like DEFINITELY MAYBE and (WHAT'S THE STORY) MORNING GLO
EXTD=RY? are certified Britpop classics, Oasis has always been a singl
EXTD=es band, so 2006's two-disc best-of, STOP THE CLOCKS, was a welco
EXTD=me arrival. Oasis has never been touted for their groundbreaking
EXTD=originality, but it's precisely their retro-styled concoction of
EXTD=irrepressible hooks and alternately chiming and roaring guitars t
EXTD=hat makes their music so appealing. STOP THE CLOCKS drives that p
EXTD=oint home and then some.\nStretching from early gems like "Rock '
EXTD=N' Roll Star" and "Live Forever" through latter period singles su
EXTD=ch as "Lyla," with the mega-hits ("Wonderwall") and B-sides sprin
EXTD=kled in along the way, the compilation serves to remind why the b
EXTD=and was one of the most popular British acts of the '90s and beyo
EXTD=nd. Throughout, the towering wall of guitars, Liam Gallagher's sn
EXTD=eering vocals, and brother Noel's impeccable songcraft create a r
EXTD=ock template that pushes all the right pleasure buttons, and with
EXTD= 23 of the band's best on offer, STOP THE CLOCKS provides a lot o
