EXTD= box contains most of their classic first three albums (including

EXTD=bums from the late '60s and early '70s. Great booklet of liner no
EXTD=tes and photos, but considering that all of those first three alb
EXTD=ums remain easy to find, and that the post-Forever Changes materi
EXTD=al is much inferior to the early recordings, it's not quite an es
EXTD=sential purchase, although it might make a nicely packaged supple

EXTD=Love were originally named the Grass Roots, but they were forced
EXTD=to change that when another band raced up the pop charts with the
EXTD= same handle. Tumultuous in an era touting peace and love, this m
EXTD=ultiracial combo was the first rock band signed to the folk label
EXTD= Elektra. In four densely packed years (1966-1970), they experien
EXTD=ced the ups, downs, and changing fortunes that artists these days

EXTD=VE STORY is a superb two-disc collection, well annotated and lovi

EXTD=ns of its two predecessors, essentials selected from the remainin

EXTD=itorial Review\nLove was the Los Angeles psychedelic band of the
EXTD='60s. Indeed, rivals the Doors wanted to be Love, and the Rolling
EXTD= Stones stole more than a few ideas from their trippier moments.
EXTD=Led by Arthur Lee and (during their finest years) ex-Byrds roadie
EXTD= Bryan MacLean, Love ran the musical gamut from proto-punk ("7 an
EXTD=d 7 Is") to lushly orchestrated pop ("Alone Again Or") and releas
EXTD=ed one of rock's true masterpieces, 1967's Forever Changes. This
EXTD=two-CD collection brings together many of the band's best moments
EXTD=, beginning with their 1966 hit "My Little Red Book" and moving o
EXTD=n to Forever Changes in its entirety and some of the band's surpr
EXTD=isingly effective later material. --Percy Keegan \n\nAMAZON.COM C
EXTD=USTOMER REVIEW\nThe sound of 60s LA, February 18, 2001\nReviewer:
EXTD= Joseph Rakauskas (Woodland Hills, CA United States)\nThis group
EXTD=was great, in my opinion more interesting than better known rival
EXTD=s The Doors. In the absence of the original albums "Love" and "Da
EXTD= Capo", the box set does a good job compiling all the most import
EXTD=ant tracks, plus thenetire third album "Forever Changes" is inclu
EXTD=ded.\nLove could play. The songwriting is great. The playing and
EXTD=instrumentation and "mood"were unique. They are energetic, access
EXTD=ible and really different from what others were doing at the time
EXTD=. I see how these guys generated such a buzxz at the time. WIth b
EXTD=etter management and touring and promotion, they could have been
EXTD=commercially much more successful, but the band is famous for not
EXTD= ever wanting to travel outside LA (and never did).\n\nLove is ex
EXTD=citing and a real find. The music is fresh and vital 35 years lat
EXTD=er. Check it out and be amazed.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\n
EXTD=Great compilation, with a few missing pieces, September 3, 2000\n
EXTD=Reviewer: A music fan\nMy only beef with this compilation is that
EXTD= I would have preferred more selections from the first LP and les
EXTD=s from the later lineups. For instance, I think that no Love comp
EXTD=ilation can be definitive without including "Mushroom Clouds." Th
EXTD=e entire first album could have been included, for that matter.\n
EXTD=On the other hand, all of the essentials from Da Capo are present
EXTD=ed, the only thing missing being the mostly disposable "Revelatio
EXTD=n." The classic Forever Changes is presented in its entirety, and
EXTD= Rhino tastefully divided the album between the two CDs in the na
EXTD=tural divisions of side 1 and 2 of the original LP.\n\nSome of th
EXTD=e late-period stuff is interesting, but things like the Four Sail
EXTD= album just don't measure up to the earlier works, in my opinion.
EXTD=\n\nStill, this compilation is pretty complete, and it presents a
EXTD=n important body of work from an important, truly original band.\n
EXTD=\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nLove Story is essential, December
EXTD= 21, 1999\nReviewer: Randy Black (Chattanooga)\nFor those unfamil
EXTD=iar with this band, Love was Jim Morrison's favorite band and a f
EXTD=avorite of others such as Robert Plant, Billy Bragg, Ted Nugent a
EXTD=nd countless others. Jimi Hendrix even recorded with them. The le
EXTD=ad singer, Arthur Lee, looks like Jimi. The music sounds like a c
EXTD=ross between the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Byrds and the Moody B
EXTD=lues. This 2 cd set remasters essential recordings putting the cu
EXTD=ts from the first 2 cds in the original mono which brings out the
EXTD= guitar and bass better giving these cuts a stronger, richer soun
EXTD=d. The entire Forever Changes cd is included. I just wish it was
EXTD=a 5 disc or more set because Love's music is so essential no musi
EXTD=c should be left out.
