EXTD=Love Story 1966-1972 - Disc 2 of 2\n\nOriginally Released July 18
EXTD=, 1995\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Double-CD box contains most of their
EXTD= classic first three albums (including the entirety of Forever Ch
EXTD=anges), all three non-LP tracks from their 1966-1968 prime, and h
EXTD=ighlights of the post-Bryan MacLean albums from the late '60s and
EXTD= early '70s. Great booklet of liner notes and photos, but conside
EXTD=ring that all of those first three albums remain easy to find, an
EXTD=d that the post-Forever Changes material is much inferior to the
EXTD=early recordings, it's not quite an essential purchase, although
EXTD=it might make a nicely packaged supplement. The absence of "Revel
EXTD=ation" from Da Capo is no big deal, but a few tracks from the deb
EXTD=ut are missing, including one of the better ones, "Mushroom Cloud
EXTD=s." -- Richie Unterberger\n\nVillage Voice (2/20/96) - Tied for #

EXTD= the Grass Roots, but they were forced to change that when anothe
EXTD=r band raced up the pop charts with the same handle. Tumultuous i
EXTD=n an era touting peace and love, this multiracial combo was the f
EXTD=irst rock band signed to the folk label Elektra. In four densely
EXTD=packed years (1966-1970), they experienced the ups, downs, and ch
EXTD=anging fortunes that artists these days experience within only a
EXTD=decade. The legacy they left behind includes one highly regarded
EXTD=classic (FOREVER CHANGES), two more great albums (their self-titl
EXTD=ed debut and its follow-up, DA CAPO) and scattered brilliance spr
EXTD=ead over another three releases. \n\nLOVE STORY is a superb two-d
EXTD=isc collection, well annotated and lovingly researched. It includ
EXTD=es all of FOREVER CHANGES, large portions of its two predecessors
EXTD=, essentials selected from the remaining output, and a couple of
EXTD=singles, live, unreleased and solo numbers. This is an essential
EXTD=set for fans of the band or for anyone wanting to be properly int
EXTD=roduced to its work . \n\nAmazon.com Editorial Review\nLove was t
EXTD=he Los Angeles psychedelic band of the '60s. Indeed, rivals the D
EXTD=oors wanted to be Love, and the Rolling Stones stole more than a
EXTD=few ideas from their trippier moments. Led by Arthur Lee and (dur
EXTD=ing their finest years) ex-Byrds roadie Bryan MacLean, Love ran t
EXTD=he musical gamut from proto-punk ("7 and 7 Is") to lushly orchest
EXTD=rated pop ("Alone Again Or") and released one of rock's true mast
EXTD=erpieces, 1967's Forever Changes. This two-CD collection brings t
EXTD=ogether many of the band's best moments, beginning with their 196
EXTD=6 hit "My Little Red Book" and moving on to Forever Changes in it
EXTD=s entirety and some of the band's surprisingly effective later ma
EXTD=terial. --Percy Keegan \n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nThe sound
EXTD=of 60s LA, February 18, 2001\nReviewer: Joseph Rakauskas (Woodlan
EXTD=d Hills, CA United States)\nThis group was great, in my opinion m
EXTD=ore interesting than better known rivals The Doors. In the absenc
EXTD=e of the original albums "Love" and "Da Capo", the box set does a
EXTD= good job compiling all the most important tracks, plus thenetire
EXTD= third album "Forever Changes" is included.\nLove could play. The
EXTD= songwriting is great. The playing and instrumentation and "mood"
EXTD=were unique. They are energetic, accessible and really different
EXTD=from what others were doing at the time. I see how these guys gen
EXTD=erated such a buzxz at the time. WIth better management and touri
EXTD=ng and promotion, they could have been commercially much more suc
EXTD=cessful, but the band is famous for not ever wanting to travel ou
EXTD=tside LA (and never did).\n\nLove is exciting and a real find. Th
EXTD=e music is fresh and vital 35 years later. Check it out and be am
EXTD=azed.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nGreat compilation, with a
EXTD=few missing pieces, September 3, 2000\nReviewer: A music fan\nMy
EXTD=only beef with this compilation is that I would have preferred mo
EXTD=re selections from the first LP and less from the later lineups.
EXTD=For instance, I think that no Love compilation can be definitive
EXTD=without including "Mushroom Clouds." The entire first album could
EXTD= have been included, for that matter.\nOn the other hand, all of
EXTD=the essentials from Da Capo are presented, the only thing missing
EXTD= being the mostly disposable "Revelation." The classic Forever Ch
EXTD=anges is presented in its entirety, and Rhino tastefully divided
EXTD=the album between the two CDs in the natural divisions of side 1
EXTD=and 2 of the original LP.\n\nSome of the late-period stuff is int
EXTD=eresting, but things like the Four Sail album just don't measure
EXTD=up to the earlier works, in my opinion.\n\nStill, this compilatio
EXTD=n is pretty complete, and it presents an important body of work f
EXTD=rom an important, truly original band.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER R
EXTD=EVIEW\nLove Story is essential, December 21, 1999\nReviewer: Rand
EXTD=y Black (Chattanooga)\nFor those unfamiliar with this band, Love
EXTD=was Jim Morrison's favorite band and a favorite of others such as
EXTD= Robert Plant, Billy Bragg, Ted Nugent and countless others. Jimi
EXTD= Hendrix even recorded with them. The lead singer, Arthur Lee, lo
EXTD=oks like Jimi. The music sounds like a cross between the Beatles,
EXTD= Jimi Hendrix, the Byrds and the Moody Blues. This 2 cd set remas
EXTD=ters essential recordings putting the cuts from the first 2 cds i
EXTD=n the original mono which brings out the guitar and bass better g
EXTD=iving these cuts a stronger, richer sound. The entire Forever Cha
EXTD=nges cd is included. I just wish it was a 5 disc or more set beca
EXTD=use Love's music is so essential no music should be left out.
