EXTD= debut artfully coalesced the sonic and stylistic elements of the
EXTD= burgeoning new romantic movement they were soon to spearhead: pu
EXTD=mping synths, glossy production, and seemingly impossible haircut
EXTD=s. Ultra-smart singles like "Girls on Film" and "Planet Earth" be
EXTD=came instant smash hits both in the U.K. and America, and other f
EXTD=ine pop gems such as "Anyone Out There" and "Careless Memories" r
EXTD=ounded out the album's stellar first side. Side two was a far mor
EXTD=e experimental and revealing affair, with primary songwriter Nick
EXTD= Rhodes leading the band through atmospheric mood-pieces like "Ni
EXTD=ght Boat," "Sound of Thunder," and the instrumental "Tel Aviv," a
EXTD=ll of which are particularly reminiscent of mid-era Roxy Music (c
EXTD=learly one of Duran's biggest influences). The band's groundbreak
EXTD=ing music videos would do the rest, securing them a unique standi
EXTD=ng as forerunners of the first MTV generation and cementing their
EXTD= status as one of the decade's most successful pop music icons. [
EXTD=The band's first U.K. number one, the non-album single "Is there

EXTD=ET IT RIGHT!, October 10, 2003\nReviewer: "ddaveyh" (St Louis, Mi
EXTD=ssouri United States)\nTo everyone out there who thinks this TRUL
EXTD=Y Duran's first album, you'd be wrong. This is the re-release of
EXTD=the first album that came out after RIO when IS THERE SOMETHING I
EXTD= SHOULD KNOW was released. Check the listing for the DURAN DURAN
EXTD=(Original recording remastered) - THAT'S the first album. \nThe r
EXTD=e-released dropped the track TO THE SHORE, edited PLANET EARTH, w
EXTD=hich was originally a remix version, and rearanged the track list
EXTD=ing adding IS THERE SOMETHING I SHOULD KNOW. \nFor those of you w
EXTD=ho desire to have the omitted track and the added one, get Duran
EXTD=Duran+1 which contains all the original tracks and it puts TO THE
EXTD= SHORE back where it belongs. I am really disappointed in the so-
EXTD=called Duran Fans out there who have the mistake in touting this
EXTD=as the first album. \nDie hard Durans such as myself, will want a
EXTD=ll three as they each slightly different.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOME
EXTD=R REVIEW\nStunning Debut, February 10, 2003\nReviewer: Ryan Brenn
EXTD=er (Texas, United States)\nFirst let's get a few things straight.
EXTD= The original UK release featured tracks Girls On Film/Planet Ear
EXTD=th(single version)/Anyone Out There/To the Shore/Careless Memorie
EXTD=s/Night Boat/Sound of Thunder/Friends of Mine/Tel Aviv. \nThe ori
EXTD=ginal US Harvest release contained Planet Earth(Night Mix)/Girls
EXTD=On Film/Anyone Out There/Careless Memories/Night Boat/Sound of Th
EXTD=under/Friends of Mine/Tel Aviv.\n\nThe 1983 Capitol rerelease had
EXTD= Girls On Film/Planet Earth(single version)/Anyone Out There/Care
EXTD=less Memories/Is There Something I Should Know?/Night Boat/Sound
EXTD=of Thunder/Friends of Mine/Tel Aviv.\n\nThen there's this import
EXTD=from Holland which you are viewing which contains the 1983 rerele
EXTD=ase plus the deleted 'To The Shore.'\n\nAny way you cut it, this
EXTD=is a fabulous album. My personal choice for track listing would b
EXTD=e the US Harvest release plus 'To The Shore' but you can't get th
EXTD=is album that way, so oh well...\n\nDuran Duran's debut was a pos
EXTD=t-Disco/New Romantic tour-de-force. Simon LeBon's space meets the
EXTD= water's edge lyrics backed by the thumping rhythms and melodies
EXTD=and dissonant sonic effects created a mesh that was danceable, mo
EXTD=ody and glamorous. This would have been a strong album if it was
EXTD=their third or fourth, and claimed as a come uppance for most ban
EXTD=ds. As a debut it was almost written off as a one-off. But here w
EXTD=e are twenty-two years later and the album is very strong and sti
EXTD=ll loads of fun.\n\nOne of the greatest qualities of the first al
EXTD=bum is it's true lack of any filler tracks. No matter what versio
EXTD=n you buy, every track is wonderful. The debut album is probably
EXTD=my favorite Duran Duran album, if not sharing that honor with Rio
EXTD=. The thing that sets the debut apart from Rio style-wise is the
EXTD=overall mood of the debut. \n\nWhereas Rio is mostly warm in tone
EXTD=, Duran Duran [album title] is mostly cold. It creates a bit dark
EXTD=er collection and that's something that really makes it standout.
EXTD= However, the first album was released not long after the death o
EXTD=f disco and remnants of that can be heard to a degree; Rio does n
EXTD=ot have that quality.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nFeels pret
EXTD=ty thin 20 years later, November 18, 2002\nReviewer: Michael Rawd
EXTD=on (Silicon Valley, CA USA)\nI picked this up as part of my own l
EXTD=ittle 80s nostalgia kick and was rather disappointed in it. My re
EXTD=collection was that while Rio was a good album and the band prett
EXTD=y much spiralled into irrelevance thereafter, their first album w
EXTD=as the best of the bunch. I ended up feeling disappointed with bo
EXTD=th the songwriting and the production work.\nThe two singles - "G
EXTD=irls on Film" and "Is There Something I Should Know?" - are the s
EXTD=trongest tracks, both in their arrangements and the strength of t
EXTD=heir sound. "Something" even manages to lift up out of the dance-
EXTD=pop genre to be something a little inspiring. Beyond that, the al
EXTD=bum features the danceable "Planet Earth" and becomes positively
EXTD=dire from there.\n\nMake no mistake: This was a synth-pop band fr
EXTD=om the get-go. The occasional tasty guitar lick is usually buried
EXTD= under the uninspired synth work and vocals. The rhythm section i
EXTD=s especially poor, feeling largely artificial even if it's not, a
EXTD=nd entirely pedestrian. The lyrics are often impenetrable, but th
EXTD=en this wasn't uncommon at the time.\n\nOn the other hand, the tw
EXTD=o singles ARE genuinely good tracks, even if their sound does fee
EXTD=l a little dated. (But then, have you listened to the Human Leagu
EXTD=e lately? Eeerg.)\n\nOverall, I'd say if you want to recapture th
EXTD=e spirit of Duran Duran, stick with Rio and give this one a pass
EXTD=unless (like me) you really need a copy of "Is There Something I
EXTD=Should Know?" If you want to sample some better 80s synth-pop, tr
EXTD=y either of Howard Jones' first two albums or the Men Without Hat
EXTD=s collection disc.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nA New Romanti
EXTD=c Classic, March 2, 2002\nReviewer: Jorje Chica (Anaheim, CA USA)
EXTD=\nDuran Duran's debut album was a landmark in British New Romanti
EXTD=c music. Like other New Romantics, Duran Duran fused elements of
EXTD=funk, disco, and a healthy dose of David Bowie/Brian Eno into the
EXTD=ir music. \nUnfortunately, the Capitol release in the U.S. featur
EXTD=ed the single "Is There Something I Should Know?" This song was N
EXTD=OT on the original UK release, or for that matter, on the first U
EXTD=S vinyl release. It was recorded later, probably after "Rio," and
EXTD= most likely added to the debut album to attract more mainstream
EXTD=fans. Definitely not the high point of their abilities. Another d
EXTD=isappointment was the deletion of the Night Version of "Planet Ea
EXTD=rth," which, instead of "Girls on Film," was the original first t
EXTD=rack. This longer, more funk-based version of "Planet Earth" is g
EXTD=reat, but apparently didn't make the cut with the American label.
EXTD= Later copies of the debut, including the CD, included the edited
EXTD= version you will remember from the video. Luckily, "Planet Earth
EXTD=" and other Night Versions are available on the "Essential Duran
EXTD=Duran" compilation.\n\nStill, "Duran Duran" is up there with ABC'
EXTD=s "The Lexicon of Love" and Ultravox's "Vienna" as one of the gre
EXTD=atest New Romantic albums. It and "Rio" are probably the only Dur
EXTD=an Duran albums the average fan needs in their collection. But th
EXTD=e above-mentioned flak gets it four, instead of five stars.\n\n\n

EXTD=vember 23, 2001\nReviewer: Kevin Claussen "Mr. Pants" (Seattle, W
EXTD=A United States)\nA really cool album. Very influenced by Chic an
EXTD=d Roxy Music, but still very original and groovy, baby. Andy Tayl
EXTD=or's guitar playing is fantastic abd he was a major force in the
EXTD=Duran Duran sound until he left in 1986. Very atmospheric songs h
EXTD=ere. I think they are all very good. Tel Aviv is a wierd discoe-s
EXTD=que instrumental that I always put on mix tapes for people. Carel
EXTD=ess Memeories still rocks my socks off. "Waiting for the Nightboa
EXTD=t" has a great instrumental opener.\nThe album makes me nostalgic
EXTD= for a phase in britpop that was shortlived and artsy fartsy; New
EXTD= Romanticism. I doubt many people in the U.S. under the age of 25
EXTD= know about it, but Duran Duran pulled it off the best clothing w
EXTD=ise. Don't believe me, just look at old pictures of Spandeau Ball
EXTD=et from the same year!!!\n\nThe U.K. vinyl import of this album i
EXTD=s essential, as it has "To the Shore" on it.\n\nLastly, the album

EXTD=) - See all my reviews\n \nThis is an *awesome* album, one of
EXTD= my favorites of all time. The very first CD I bought back in 198
EXTD=4 was the British version of this album, which originally had the
EXTD= same track listing as above. \nBack in 1999, I was surfin' Amazo
EXTD=n and noticed that they had the import version that *has* the "To
EXTD= The Shore" track on it. While it's been tacked on to the end of
EXTD=the disc instead of placed after "Careless Memories" where it bel
EXTD=ongs, it's nice to have it on CD after all these years. It's also
EXTD= nice to have the "proper" British titles for the songs (for exam

EXTD="Is There Anyone Out There"). Now, if only they'd put "Faster tha

EXTD=. I see you noticed; "near" perfect. "Why have I said that?" you
EXTD=ask. Ok, here I go. The cover artwork on this disc is the debut c
EXTD=over; however the tracks on the recording are the reissue. Why is
EXTD= that? You can actually buy a copy of the reissue with the right
EXTD=cover from Japan. Oh, another thing, why have the original cover

EXTD=OM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nOut of Left Field: A Phenomenon, August 22, 2
EXTD=000\nReviewer: Raleigh (Raleigh, NC)\nAt a college radio station
EXTD=I once worked for, I found the original release of Duran Duran's
EXTD=debut. Somebody had written on the back, "More 10-watt rock from
EXTD=England. It'll never sell in the U.S."\nWhile Duran had not yet p
EXTD=erfected their "sound" that was made trademark and multiplatinum
EXTD=on "Rio" and "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" they debuted with one o
EXTD=f the best new romantic-era albums that bettered contemporaries (
EXTD=Spandau Ballet comes to mind). \n\nThe over-long synth intros to
EXTD="Nightboat" and "Friends of Mine" seem a bit dated. But "Nightboa
EXTD=t" still captures a dancehall nightmare tone. Yet the simple trad
EXTD=e-off of the melody in "Planet Earth" between guitar and keyboard
EXTD= still sounds fresh. Who can resist "Bop bop bop-bop be-bop bop b
EXTD=op-bop?" And "Girls on Film" is still a taut pop song that manage
EXTD=s to tease (without the video). \n\nCritics charged that after re
EXTD=lease "Girl on Film" and "Planet Earth" that Duran were overly ca
EXTD=utious with their first full album release. Listening to "Waiting
EXTD= for the Sound of Thunder" and "Careless Memories," I tend to agr
EXTD=ee. But Duran never again managed the unpretentious tone of "Anyo
EXTD=ne Out There?" or the haunting orchestral "Tel Aviv."\n\nThe only
EXTD= problem with the re-release was including the bombastic but fun
EXTD=sing-a-long single "Is There Something I Should Know?" Duran had
EXTD=hit the big time and this one of their best singles. It sounds to
EXTD=o confident with the rest of the album. As long as you skip "Care
EXTD=less Memories" this album is one of the best Duran Duran ever did
EXTD=, and one of the best of its genre.\n\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER RE

EXTD=stered sound. No audio bonus tracks (Unless you count "To The Sho

EXTD=rans' first album. It was an injustice that it never picked up in
EXTD= the USA at first. After "Hungry Like The Wolf" hit #3 and "Rio"
EXTD=hit #14 in the US, Capitol/EMI realized it was time to try again
EXTD=with releasing this album in the States. They took off "To The Sh
EXTD=ore" and added the then new recording "Is There Something I Shoul
EXTD=d Know?" which went on to hit #4 on the US charts. Virtually ever
EXTD=y song here is a gem, Even the instrumental "Tel Aviv" has a catc
EXTD=hy beat. This is prime choice material here, Grade "A" Duran Dura
EXTD=n. Not everyone will agree but I just can't call anything that th
EXTD=ey wrote themselves trash. Basically you are buying this for the
EXTD=remastering and "To The Shore". I have not seen "To The Shore" on
EXTD= any compilation CD (but other than "Singles 81 - 85" I have not
EXTD=bought any recent D.D. comps) so maybe it's indiginous to this CD
EXTD=? I think it's worth it, Regardless. I love remastered CD's. Chee

EXTD=n the first, April 23, 2005\nReviewer: Timothy Brough "author and
EXTD= music buff" (Springfield, PA United States)\nWhile it certainly
EXTD=sets the stage for their exploits to come, the debut album by Dur
EXTD=an Duran has dated itself rather tellingly. The highlights remain
EXTD= the singles, "Planet Earth" and "Girls On Film." The album also
EXTD=contains "Careless Memories," which should have been a hit. But t
EXTD=he greater textures and more sophisticated songs came forth more
EXTD=on "Rio" than here. \n\n"Duran Duran" captures the kind of deliri
EXTD=ous art school DIY ethos of the period. The band was obviously st
EXTD=ewed in the likes of Roxy Music and David Bowie, but there is a l
EXTD=ot of Ultravoxx in here, plus the club beats that these disco boy
EXTD=s loved to spend their nights with. The synthesizers dominate, ar
EXTD=e rather simplistic sounding, and LeBon's vocals are still highly
EXTD= affected. And if it wasn't obvious that these guys were working
EXTD=through their art school pretensions, just listen to "Tel Aviv,"
EXTD=an exercise in movie soundtrack making. \n\nThe debut DD remains
EXTD=a fine album, but you can get both highlights on the "Greatest" d
EXTD=isc. Also worth noting, as many others have: the first American v
EXTD=ersion of this album (on the Harvest Records label) had a club mi
EXTD=x of "Planet Earth" leading it off. Then, after "Rio" took off co
EXTD=mmercially, "To The Shore" was replaced by "Is There Something I
EXTD=Should Know" and the single mix of "Planet Earth" was switched wi
EXTD=th the club mix. That was the first US CD version. This version r
EXTD=epresents the original UK release, though if you look hard enough
EXTD=, you will find a version that has both "To The Shore" and "Is Th
EXTD=ere Something I Should Know."\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW (Re
EXTD=mastered CD Edition)\na very solid debut, August 28, 2004\nReview
EXTD=er: J. Brady (PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC United States)\nFor the record,
EXTD=this is the THIRD version of DD's debut album. As originally rele
EXTD=ased in 1981, it contained the re-recorded, extended club version
EXTD= of Planet Earth ( cheesy string arrangements and all), and the e
EXTD=xcellent, moody rocker To the Shore was inexplicably left off.( I
EXTD=t still had the same cover, though, with the odd car and the sill
EXTD=y New Romantic clothing the band then sported) When re-released i
EXTD=n the spring of 1983, after Duran mania had swept the US, the far
EXTD= superior 7" single mix of Planet Earth was put back on, but To t
EXTD=he Shore was still left off, in favour of their current hit Is Th
EXTD=ere Something I Should Know? and the cover was changed. FINALLY ,
EXTD= more than 20 years later, American fans get the original album a
EXTD=s it was released in the UK, with all the tracks as they original
EXTD=ly appeared. This is actually quite a good album. Better than the
EXTD=ir reputation as "teeny-bop" would leave one to believe. And Dura
EXTD=n Duran were an actual self-contained BAND, playing their own ins
EXTD=truments, writing their own ( rather good ) material. A more poli
EXTD=shed, assured and accomplished debut you are not likely to find f
EXTD=rom this era. I actually still play this one pretty regularly, al
EXTD=ong with Rio and Big Thing, as I think they are the band's best,
EXTD=most consistant albums.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW (Remaster

EXTD=ugust 6, 2003\nReviewer: Scott Davies (Ohio)\nWhen I saw that Dur
EXTD=an's 1st album was being remastered I didn't think there would be
EXTD= a reason to re-buy it. That changed when I saw the the track lis
EXTD=ting was going to be the original UK sequence, which meant this w
EXTD=ould be the 1st time the excellent song 'To the shore' was going
EXTD=to be released in the U.S. on this album. Having first purchased
EXTD=this album in 1982, just before the band broke in America, many f
EXTD=ans don't realize the 1st issue included the 'Night version' of '
EXTD=Planet Earth'. and excluded 'To the shore'. In 1983 the band rele
EXTD=ased 'Is there something I should know' as a single. This prompte
EXTD=d the company to re-release the first album with the new single,
EXTD=which was VERY out of place with the other songs, and now also in
EXTD=cluded the infinitely superior single version of 'Planet Earth'.
EXTD=Now with the album returned to it's original intended running ord
EXTD=er, how could I resist?! The album has held up well over time, an
EXTD=d that includes the fact that there is a somewhat dated feel to i
EXTD=t. 'Planet Earth' will always be among my favorites of all time,
EXTD=and holds very special memories. However, 'Girls on film' falls f
EXTD=lat and comes across as juvenile. Outside of that the rest of the
EXTD= album is classic New Wave/New Romantic. The disappointment in th
EXTD=e remastering comes from the fact that songs 7 and 8 have a notic
EXTD=eably lower fidelity to the other 7 songs. It's very obvious when
EXTD= comparing it to the original U.S. CD, which sounds better on tho
EXTD=se songs. Just another example of shabby, half hearted remasterin
EXTD=g skills from someone that did it as a 'job' rather than out of p
EXTD=assion. Still, it's great to have this classic released in it's o
EXTD=riginal form, and it may be the 1st time many hear 'To the shore'
EXTD=. The band never did anything as good as this. Though albums #2 a
EXTD=nd #3 are worth owning, they don't measure up entirely to this wo
