EXTD=Originally Released 1987\nCD Edition Released \nRhino Handmade CD
EXTD= Edition Released September 7, 2004 \n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: After
EXTD=the musical and commercial disappointment of Guadalcanal Diary's
EXTD=second album, the overcooked and overproduced Jamboree, the band
EXTD=took a simultaneous step back and leap forward on their third lon
EXTD=g-player, 1987's 2x4. 2x4 found the band working once again with
EXTD=producer Don Dixon, who had captured their mingled punch and jang
EXTD=le on their debut, 1984's Walking in the Shadow of the Big Man, a
EXTD=nd the happy irony was that Dixon was able to give the band the t
EXTD=ougher and more detailed sound they failed to get on Jamboree. At
EXTD= the same time, Guadalcanal Diary rose to the occasion with a bat
EXTD=ch of songs that merited Dixon's more muscular treatment; 2x4 isn
EXTD='t short on pop smarts, but Murray Attaway and Jeff Walls put a l
EXTD=ot more weight behind their guitars on this set, and bassist Rhet
EXTD=t Crowe and drummer John Poe weren't afraid to keep up with their
EXTD= wall of sound. "Things Fall Apart" and "Litany (Life Goes On)" p
EXTD=roved Guadalcanal Diary could have their cake and eat it too, hol
EXTD=ding on to the obtuse Southern accents of their earlier work whil
EXTD=e introducing plenty of Big Rock swagger to the mix, as "Little B
EXTD=irds" and "3 a.m." offered reassurance that the band still knew h
EXTD=ow to turn down their amps when circumstances demanded. If Guadal
EXTD=canal Diary succumbed to the stereotypical sophomore slump with J
EXTD=amboree, they managed a far stronger third-inning rebound than th
EXTD=e majority of their peers on 2x4, which sounds like the group's s
EXTD=trongest and most confident album. -- Mark Deming\n\nAMAZON.COM
EXTD=CUSTOMER REVIEW\nGuadalcanal Diary 2X4, January 30, 2007\nReviewe
EXTD=r: James Lambert (Fort Worth, TX USA)\nThis is a must have for an
EXTD=yone interested in 80's era "college music" rock. I'm not sure wh
EXTD=y this band didn't gain broader acceptance, except that Athens, G
EXTD=A is only entitled to one megaband.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVI
EXTD=EW\nA classic re-work!!!, January 28, 2007\nReviewer: M. A. Carey
EXTD= (Va. Beach VA. USA)\nGuadalcanal diary's career was sadly too sh
EXTD=ort, maybe because the Athens sound ( REM, B-52's )was wearing th
EXTD=in by the time this CD came out originally in 1991. This re-issue
EXTD=, with bonus tracks and outtakes, clearly shows the potential thi
EXTD=s band had. One of the best re-packaging in recent memory, you'll
EXTD= wish this band had released more material like this. There are m
EXTD=ore CD's by the band, but this is definitely the place to start.\n
EXTD=\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nAlmost Flawless, August 5, 2005\n
EXTD=Reviewer: J. P. Leenaarts "Mabrymusic" (Nashville, TN USA)\n\nI g
EXTD=ot turned on to this album when I was about 11 or 12 years old by
EXTD= a friend of the family. The "Diary" came from the same Athens, G
EXTD=A camp that spawned R.E.M., but obviously Stipe and the boys got
EXTD=much further up the food chain. If you're a fan of jangle-pop or
EXTD=just a fan of anything even remotely influenced by the Beatles, t
EXTD=his is a true gem. Ironically, they do a great cover of the Fab F
EXTD=our's "And Your Bird Can Sing". Murray Attaway has one of the bes
EXTD=t voices in rock and for all of the right reasons, I don't think
EXTD=this album will ever truly age.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\n
EXTD=One of my all-time favorite albums, period., November 4, 2004\nRe
EXTD=viewer: James Poulakos (Decatur, GA USA)\nReviewers on Amazon of
EXTD=another Guadalcanal Diary album put it best: this reminds us of h
EXTD=aving a great time in a small club with a steamy hot rockin' band
EXTD=, and 5 stars isn't enough for this. It's a genuine masterpiece,
EXTD=beginning to end. Fans of well-crafted pop songs and experimental
EXTD= rock a la the Beatles Revolver will dig it; fans of rockabilly a
EXTD=nd psychobilly will dig quite a few tracks on it, too. I got to s
EXTD=ee them back in the day, at 688 in Atlanta, and I cherish the mem
EXTD=ory. I've got this one on vinyl and can't wait to get it on CD --
EXTD= and I usually don't buy CDs of stuff I've already got on vinyl.
EXTD=I've just about worn out the vinyl of this one, though. You've go
EXTD=t to hear it to believe it.
