EXTD=ter/guitarist Mark Knopfler may still be recovering from the moto
EXTD=rcycle accident that nearly killed him in 2003, but it's no excus
EXTD=e for this flaccid EP of "live in the studio" recordings. Release
EXTD=d in 2004, Shangri-La was a bare-bones affair that found the lege
EXTD=ndary Dire Straits leader assuming a more contemplative and fatal
EXTD=istic persona than in previous efforts, resulting in one of his m
EXTD=oodiest -- but not altogether unpleasant -- solo outings. That Sh
EXTD=angri-La was recorded with little or no overdubs makes this eight
EXTD=-song performance completely redundant. Nothing new is brought to
EXTD= the table besides the inclusion of "Rdiger" from 1996's Golden 
EXTD=Heart, and even that track is the same as the original recording 
EXTD=-- minus the strings this time around. As expected, the playing i
EXTD=s top-notch, the recording impeccable, and the tunes are strong.

EXTD=ng For Sonny Liston" bristles with grittier energy. Fans of Knopf
EXTD=ler's fluid, expressive guitar technique will find much to admire
EXTD= as well, from the sprightly, country-fied chicken-pickin' of "Do
EXTD=negan's Gone" to the tasteful, economic soloing on "Boom, Like Th
EXTD=at" and "Everybody Pays." But, as on the album that inspired this
EXTD= EP, the real star here is Knopfler the songwriter--an artist who
EXTD=se choice in themes and subtle wordplay has become the equal of h

EXTD=As guitar gods go, Mark Knopfler is a guy whose mellow music-maki
EXTD=ng approach is at odds with the over-the-top images generally ass
EXTD=ociated with the aforementioned tag. That notwithstanding, Knopfl
EXTD=er demonstrates on LIVE FROM SHANGRI-LA that his kind of subtle i
EXTD=nstrumental skill and deft wielding of musical textures make any 
EXTD=kind of six-string histrionics moot. Drawing the bulk of material
EXTD= from this set's 2004 studio predecessor SHANGRI-LA means there's
EXTD= a rich trove of storytelling fare for Knopfler and his compatrio
EXTD=ts to trot out. "Boom, Like That," a nod to Ray Kroc sung in the 
EXTD=McDonald's founder's voice, benefits from a snappy reading while 
EXTD="Donegan's Gone," Knopfler's homage to his skiffle idol, has a tw
EXTD=angy charm that points at the influence of Chet Atkins as much as
EXTD= it does of Donegan. And like Bruce Springsteen and Paul Simon, t
EXTD=he Scottish string-bender has his own song about a boxer in the s
EXTD=hape of the fuzz-guitar blues of "Song for Sonny Liston." The onl

EXTD=I heard that night in Radio City Music Hall. Something with a lit

EXTD=sions have enough new edge and energy to distinguish themselves f
EXTD=rom the originals, so that now when I listen to Shangri-La, I pre
EXTD=fer these renditions more. \n\nThe standouts for me are a greatly
EXTD= improved "Song for Sonny Liston", which was one track from the o

EXTD=f solo at the end extends this versus the original, but I feel on
EXTD=ly teased. I want the solo to go on and on and on... \n\nHow abou
EXTD=t it Mark? Treat the diehards to something truly indulgent. Give 
EXTD=us a 12-15 minute version of "Everybody Pays" with an extended so

EXTD=s have expounded more than I'm going to, but the tracks are much

EXTD= songs here were not performed live on his last tour, so tis grea

EXTD=ngri-La, the full-length version. It's a beautifully cohesive alb
EXTD=um that you can get for a good price. \n\nOne-Take is for the Kno
EXTD=pfler fanatic, and it is an excellent buy for such fanatics (like
EXTD= me), almost a gift from MK. The highlights are the rough, live "
EXTD=feel" of the music (as on "Trawlerman" and "Sonny Liston"); the m
EXTD=ix, which has MK's guitar to the forefront and eschews overdubs; 
EXTD=and Mark's playing: he adds more fills here than on the full-leng
EXTD=th releases, playing off of the lyrics, and that's sort of what M
EXTD=K is all about for a lot of us. "Tupelo" and the aforementioned t
EXTD=wo are good examples of this, making all 3 (and maybe Everybody P
EXTD=ays) superior to their Shangri-La versions. \n\nBut there are som
EXTD=e odd decisions on One Track that keep it from achieving 5 stars.
EXTD= First, "Boom Like That" is disappointing, dropping 2 choruses an
EXTD=d not adding much guitar-wise, tho the singing drips with vitriol
EXTD=. But then--and this is just my taste--I have to question includi
EXTD=ng Rudiger, Donegan's Gone, and Stand Up Guy over so many other s
EXTD=ongs that we'd love to hear alternate versions of: 5:15 most obvi
EXTD=ously, but also Sucker Row and Shangri-La, to name the top three.
EXTD= These three songs are a lot more interesting musically and lyric
EXTD=ally than the three that were included. And Rudiger really sticks
EXTD= out--if he's going to dig back into his solo catalogue for a son
EXTD=g, I mean, we could all name 20 more interesting songs: Speedway,
EXTD= Silvertown, Old Pigweed, Hill Farmer's Blues, on and on. \n\nSo 
EXTD=that's the quibble. But when all is said and done, here are eight
EXTD= brilliantly performed, generally brilliantly written songs by th
EXTD=e guy whom many of us consider to be the most wondrous, unique gu

EXTD=the announcement for this CD, I thought, "What's the point?" The 
EXTD=songs already exist on other CDs, and there is not even that one 
EXTD="never been released" song to be used as a justification for thos
EXTD=e that have to have every song from an artist. The fact that this
EXTD= CD cost so little made me pick one up from the local Best Buy. \n
EXTD=\nI have the Shangri-La CD and listen to it often, so when I put 
EXTD=this CD in my player I didn't expect much in the way of a change 
EXTD=or difference from what I have come to expect from these songs.. 
EXTD=I was wrong. These songs being performed live are great! There ar
EXTD=e some subtle differences in things like tone or prominence of vo
EXTD=ice versus instruments, nothing earth shattering, but enough to n
EXTD=otice, and more importantly enough to have a preference as to whi
EXTD=ch disc to play when listening to a certain song. \n\nThis EP wil
EXTD=l be my choice to listen to "The Trawlerman's Song", "Back to Tup
EXTD=elo", "Song for Sonny Liston" and "Everybody Pays", while the oth
EXTD=ers are just as good as those on the Shangri-La CD. The aforement
EXTD=ioned songs are just so much better in terms of clarity and tone,
EXTD= over the previous renditions. Maybe it is intangible, but for me
EXTD= they are more enjoyable on this disc. One nice addition to this 
EXTD=EP that did not come from the Shangri-La CD is "Rudiger" which is
EXTD= a song about a stalker that Knopfler wrote after John Lennon was
EXTD= killed (according to his introduction to this song on his "A Nig
EXTD=ht In London" DVD), and this version is much better than the one 
EXTD=from his "Golden Heart" CD. \n\nI give this disc 4 out of 5 stars
EXTD= only because they put the weakest track from Shangri-la on it, "
EXTD=Donegan's Gone". Given the limited space for an EP, they could ha
EXTD=ve made the tract list better with one of the other great tunes f
EXTD=rom that first CD, and not this throw-away shuffle based on hero

EXTD=lease to review. On one hand, if you're a big fan of Mark's solo 
EXTD=work like myself; you're going to really dig this EP. I still pla
EXTD=y Shangri-La (the album which 7 of these songs came from) regular
EXTD=ly and to hear these tunes in a "live" setting is a refreshing ch
EXTD=ange. However, if you are new to Mr. Knopfler, you'd be better of
EXTD=f picking up his Shangri-la album. \n\nOn to the actual content- 
EXTD=the songs here are remarkably faithful to their original versions
EXTD=. While that is an impressive feat, the music here is almost too 
EXTD=close to it's original form. The sound quality is fantastic, with
EXTD= just enough ambience to let you know that this was recorded live
EXTD=. Mark himself said much of the Shangri-La album was recorded in 
EXTD=a live setting, so like I already said- don't expect too much var
EXTD=iation here. \n\nThere are three songs that stand out to me as be
EXTD=ing 'better' than the original album cuts. The opening "Trawlerma
EXTD=n's Song" really benefits from Mark's excellent guitar tone cutti
EXTD=ng through a little louder and clearer than on the Shangri-La alb
EXTD=um. Mark gives a great vocal performance on "Song for Sonny Listo
EXTD=n"- you can almost hear him smirking as he delivers the lyrics...
EXTD= very nice. Last but not least, "Donegan's Gone" manages to swing
EXTD= even better than the album cut- it just really comes to life her
EXTD=e. It's something you have to hear to understand. \n\nAll things 
EXTD=considered, I really dig this release. Excellent sound quality, g
EXTD=reat performances and a really strong vocal and guitar performanc
EXTD=e from Mark. The rest of the band sounds great as well, with the 
EXTD=drums really coming through nicely with this live mix. I really w
EXTD=ish this was a full album release rather than an EP (it's just to
EXTD=o short), but hopefully Mark is saving the full live experience f
EXTD=or an upcoming live album/dvd. \n\nIf you loved Shangri-La, buy t
EXTD=his EP. If you're new to Mark, check out Shangri-La or any of Mar
EXTD=k's other solo albums first (I strongly recommend Sailing to Phil
EXTD=adelphia).
