EXTD=That's All! - Disc 2 of 2\nSammy Davis, Jr.\n2001 Rhino Entertain
EXTD=ment Company\n\nOriginally Released 1967\nRemastered + Expanded C
EXTD=D Edition Released June 19, 2001\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: After a tw
EXTD=o-year hiatus from the Las Vegas casino circuit to appear on Broa
EXTD=dway in Golden Boy, Sammy Davis, Jr.'s triumphant return was comm
EXTD=issioned by none other than Reprise Records' boss -- one Francis
EXTD=Albert Sinatra. That's All is a living testament to the omni-tale
EXTD=nted entertainer. On the two-CD set, Rhino Records has retrofitte
EXTD=d the original release with a pair of previously unissued perform
EXTD=ances -- "Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody" and the theme
EXTD= song to My Mother the Car. Parties curious for the sensation of
EXTD=what it must have been like in a major Vegas showroom during the
EXTD=reign of the Rat Pack need look no further than That's All. It be
EXTD=comes clear why Davis became so endearing to not only Sinatra and
EXTD= Dean Martin, but also to anyone who simply loved to be entertain
EXTD=ed. His versatility is genuine -- as opposed to an actor who trie
EXTD=s to sing or vice versa. This allowed for Davis' persona to prese
EXTD=nt amazing hues of intensity without ever losing his irreverent s
EXTD=ense of laid-back hip. Examples of the innate sense of timing and
EXTD= dramatic abilities that Davis brandishes are evident throughout.
EXTD= On the Mercer/Arlen standard "Any Place I Hang My Hat Is Home,"
EXTD=as well as throughout the medleys featured on disc one, listeners
EXTD= hear the grace and panache that would set the standard for all t
EXTD=he imitations that followed. The various spoken "Monologue" piece
EXTD=s, which comfortably date the performance, are another treat. The
EXTD= political incorrectness in Davis' dialogue is a reminder that, n
EXTD=o matter how much things may change, they also remain the same --
EXTD= such as the immense talent of Sammy Davis, Jr. -- Lindsay Planer

EXTD= know why they called him Mr. Entertainment, March 23, 2003\nRevi
EXTD=ewer: Daniel Jolley "darkgenius" (Shelby, North Carolina USA)\nIt
EXTD='s 1965, and Sammy has returned to the famous Sands Hotel in Las
EXTD=Vegas after a two-year hiatus performing Golden Boy on Broadway.
EXTD=This remarkable recording, finally released on CD a few years ago
EXTD=, gives the listener an amazing opportunity to hear Sammy the per
EXTD=former at his best. It is impossible to truly appreciate the magi
EXTD=c of Sammy's act without being able to actually watch him perform
EXTD= on stage, but this two-disc live recording is easily the next be
EXTD=st thing. Sammy did much more than simply sing songs; he joked, d
EXTD=id impersonations, told stories, generally goofed around, whateve
EXTD=r it took to make everyone in the audience come under his spell,
EXTD=and it is this extraneous material that makes this recording extr
EXTD=a special to Sammy fans. As he told the audience at one point, "i
EXTD=f you want to hear me sing serious, you're going to have to buy m
EXTD=y records." There are actually surprisingly few show-stoppers to
EXTD=be found here: Rock-A-Bye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody, The Lady
EXTD= is a Tramp, The Birth of the Blues, As Long As She Needs Me, Wha
EXTD=t Kind of Fool Am I. Instead, you get a fascinating mix of songs
EXTD=hard to find elsewhere. One extraordinary medley of songs, perfor
EXTD=med to the sole accompaniment of Michael Silva's tom tom drums, i
EXTD=ncludes snippets from such diverse tunes as I've Got You Under My
EXTD= Skin, Dang Me, Big Bad John, The Girl From Ipanema, and Hello Do
EXTD=lly. There's a wonderful Broadway medley consisting of songs such
EXTD= as Lonesome Road, Gonna Build a Mountain, I Want to Be With You
EXTD=(from Golden Boy), and Sammy's first recorded song Hey There. \nT
EXTD=he first CD is most notable for its humor and monologue. Sammy's
EXTD=monologue, in fact, lasts almost ten full minutes and is quite pe
EXTD=rsonal and extremely hilarious. Sammy opines on the nature of Las
EXTD= Vegas, engages in a lot of self-deprecating humor about his race
EXTD= and religion, and informs the audience, some ten or fifteen minu
EXTD=tes into the show, that the gig is actually being recorded for re
EXTD=lease as a live album on Sinatra's Reprise records. Disc One ends
EXTD= with a bonus track not included on the album's initial release i
EXTD=n the 1960s, Sammy's theme song for the ill-fated Jerry Van Dyke
EXTD=television show My Mother the Car. On Disc Two, Sammy gets down t
EXTD=o the business of singing and swinging as only he could do it, bu
EXTD=t there is still a lot of humor left to unleash upon the audience
EXTD=. Traditionally, the most famous vehicle for Sammy's immensely de
EXTD=ad-on impersonations is Rock-A-Bye Your Baby, and it is actually
EXTD=a real treat of sorts to hear him sing this song all the way thro
EXTD=ugh in his own voice, but on this night Sammy chose a song writte
EXTD=n for Fred Astaire but made famous by Frank Sinatra to showcase h
EXTD=is impersonation skills. On One For My Baby (And One More For the
EXTD= Road), Sammy impersonates Astaire and, amazingly, Sinatra himsel
EXTD=f, as well as Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Jimmy Stewart, Carey
EXTD= Grant, W.C. Fields, Marlon Brando, Dean Martin, and Jerry Lewis.
EXTD= No one has ever done Grant, Stewart, and Dino as uncannily as Sa
EXTD=m the Man did.\n\nThis remarkable live recording is really for al
EXTD=l the Sammy fans out there. Those unfamiliar with Sammy's persona
EXTD=lity and unique style of swinging may not warm up to Sammy's anti
EXTD=cs and may well misinterpret Sammy's frequent jokes about race an
EXTD=d religion, although Sammy does make clear to the audience that h
EXTD=e is really just making jokes about himself and is in no way tryi
EXTD=ng to invade the privacy of the audience. It doesn't take much of
EXTD= a discerning ear to clearly understand that the live audience is
EXTD= incredibly entertained, eating up every antic Sammy engages in.
EXTD=I love this CD, but it really doesn't showcase Sammy the immacula
EXTD=te singer as much as it does Sammy the world's greatest entertain
EXTD=er. A perfect example of this fact is the next to last track whic
EXTD=h features over eight minutes of a jam session with Buddy Rich on
EXTD= drums and Sammy on the vibraphone. With George Rhodes conducting
EXTD= the orchestra, the talented Michael Silva on drums, and a guest
EXTD=spot by the world's greatest drummer Buddy Rich, this live show g
EXTD=ives us almost 100 minutes of Mr. Entertainment at his most enter
EXTD=taining best.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nSammy is ALL THAT
EXTD=and that's all!, August 5, 2003\nReviewer: D. Janelle (Stephens C
EXTD=ity, VA USA)\nLike another reviewer, this album is a hard-wired c
EXTD=hildhood memory. It was ostensibly my Mom's record, but my sister
EXTD= and I probably listened to it more that Mom did. After dozens (h
EXTD=undreds?) of listenings, the old vinyl records ended up in a box,
EXTD= never to be seen again, but oh, how those songs remained. Easily
EXTD= 20 years after last hearing Sammy perform these standards, it wa
EXTD=s his versions from this record I still had in my head. Finding t
EXTD=his recording became a quest, and now it's paid off. It's absolut
EXTD=ely amazing to me how much of this 2-disc set I could still sing
EXTD=along to after all this time, including all the scat riffs. Can y
EXTD=ou say indelible?\nBut enough about me, how 'bout the record (sor
EXTD=ry, this one will *always* be a record to me, even if its on CD).
EXTD= In a word, phenominal. Sammy's range of material is astounding,
EXTD=and he moves between moods and styles with an ease that no perfor
EXTD=mer today can come close to matching. Every song (with the possib
EXTD=le exception of the throw-away "My Mother the Car", added for thi
EXTD=s re-release) is like a gift Sammy gives to the audience. His car
EXTD=e in respecting the songs is apparent, even when he's having fun
EXTD=with them (quoth Sammy, during a light-hearted rendition of Rock-
EXTD=a-bye Your Baby, "You wanna hear me sing serious, you're gonna ha
EXTD=fta buy my records!"). Towards the end of the same disc, during t
EXTD=he "Lonesome Road" medly he manages to shift from a very upbeat s
EXTD=ampling of songs to a rendition of "I Want To Be With You" that a
EXTD=bsolutely breaks your heart. Then two beats later, he's back to c
EXTD=racking jokes. \n\nIn less talented hands, all this shifting-of-g
EXTD=ears would probably be annoying, but in Sammy it comes across as
EXTD=a genuine desire to simply entertain. Listening to Sammy sing the
EXTD=se songs is like watching a child pull out and play with each of
EXTD=his most beloved toys. Though he's clearly in love with performin
EXTD=g for the crowd, you get the feeling his performance would be eve
EXTD=ry bit as passionate if there were no-one else there. The man was
EXTD= and still is a treasure, truly one of a kind. If you love Sammy,
EXTD= you must have this set. If you've never heard him, (too bad for
EXTD=you), buy this set, listen to it, and come to know why Sammy Davi
EXTD=s Jr was one of the greatest all-around entertainers we've ever h
EXTD=ad. We miss you, Sammy!\n\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nPass d

EXTD=acfarlane (San Jose, CA United States)\nSammy hits on all cylinde
EXTD=rs for this 2 disk CD. CD number one is great, but things really
EXTD=start to wail on the second. His talent, that was shadowed by Fra
EXTD=nk and Dean, really gleams in this 1965 recording at the Sands (n
EXTD=ow the Venetian for the youngsters). At 36, my mom would have bee
EXTD=n pregnant with me if she were there, but the talent and the natu
EXTD=re of the man become so real in this recording that you can almos
EXTD=t touch him. So dim the lights baby, crank it up, pour a martini,
EXTD= and let Sammy do what he did so well. Entertain you.\n\n\nAMAZON

EXTD= (Chicago, IL)\nRhino Records did it again! There isn't much to a
EXTD=dd to the reviews of my fellow Sammy fans here, but I'll put my t
EXTD=wo cents in...Sammy hit The Sands like a million bolts of lightni
EXTD=ng and it's all here for us to enjoy. While that first medley isn
EXTD='t as good as the second one, (or the percussion - only WEST SIDE
EXTD= STORY Medley found on this disc's counterpart release, SAMMY AT
EXTD=THE COCOANUT GROVE) it's Sammy in all his glory, plus impromptu m
EXTD=oments you just won't find ever again....Sammy tipping his hat to
EXTD= fellow Rat Packer Frank Sinatra (who can be heard cat calling ba
EXTD=ck to Sam a few times from the audience), a call to the stage for
EXTD= the daddy of all drumbeats, Buddy Rich while Sammy sits in on vi
EXTD=bes....the liner notes mentioned this was somethng that you just
EXTD=HAD to see to believe...I'll let my ears do the seeing now....and
EXTD= my favorite track here is probably "Another Spring". A great son
EXTD=g by Leslie Bricusse and a really great arrangement by long time
EXTD=Sammy associate, George Rhodes. Extra points for the remastering,

EXTD=N.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nThat's All!?! At Last!!!, June 26, 2001\nR
EXTD=eviewer: Uani Tillmon (Chicago, IL USA)\nI have been looking in v
EXTD=ain for this record for years. My father bought the two-album set
EXTD= when it came out in 1967 and I grew up listening to it -- consta
EXTD=ntly. I was so excited to see it was finally re-released, I order
EXTD=ed two copies immediately (one for my dad!). I love to sing and I
EXTD= have hard-wired memories of the lyrics of many standards from th
EXTD=is album alone. I'm sorry -- this is coming off more like a senti
EXTD=mental gush than a proper review. But I just received my copies t
EXTD=his morning, listening to it as I write this and am laughing with
EXTD= delight as the memories of the tunes and segues are coming back
EXTD=to me. I'm looking forward to sharing this with my son.\nHowever,
EXTD= on the musical tip: I agree; this is a must-have for any Sammy f
EXTD=an; a great intro. The band is happenin', Sammy is in fine voice.
EXTD= I've always felt that he is the most underrated of the infamous
EXTD="Rat Pack". Incredible voice -- consummate entertainer. This albu
EXTD=m captures all of that, his humour, improvisation, impressions (d
EXTD=ead-on Dean Martin), and the flavor of Vegas in the Swingin' '60s
EXTD=. Many thanks to Rhino, Reprise and everyone else involved in let
EXTD=ting this gem shine again!\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nPure
EXTD=Sammy - That's All!, June 21, 2001\nReviewer: "wlafauce" (Belvide
EXTD=re, Il USA)\nThat's All is an excellent introduction to Sammy Dav
EXTD=is, or an excellent addition to any Sammy collection. Unlike most
EXTD= of the other Sammy compilation CD's, That's All captures not onl
EXTD=y Sammy the singer, but Sammy the mimic, Sammy the comic and, Sam
EXTD=my the musician. The medley of drums and voice is a mixture both
EXTD=great singing and comic interpretation. The monolouge brings the
EXTD=history of Las Vegas & race relations to life and, more important
EXTD=ly, its still funny. The jam session with Buddy Rich on drums and
EXTD= Sammy on the vibes is worth the price of the CD alone. If you al
EXTD=ready own That's All on vinyl, the added material and improved so
EXTD=und makes owning this CD a must.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\n
EXTD=Viva Las Davis!! Sammy swings the Sands!!!, June 21, 2001\nReview
EXTD=er: Tom Cohen (Los Angeles, CA)\nReleased in conjunction with "Sa
EXTD=mmy Davis Jr. Live at the Cocoanut Grove," this is another smokin
EXTD=' live performance by this breathtaking artist. And this one is a
EXTD= double-CD set!!! Rhino and Warner Bros. have done a great job wi
EXTD=th the re-mastering and the retro packaging of this re-issue, whi
EXTD=ch includes the original liner notes and even the old Reprise "st
EXTD=eamboat" logo on the CD itself!! This album captures Sammy at the
EXTD= top of his game, as he runs through his own hits, versions of so
EXTD=ngs assoicated with other performers of the day and of course, hi
EXTD=s masterful impressions. It's a wonder that Sammy didn't cause th
EXTD=e late & lamented Sands to implode on this night. Also, the packa
EXTD=ging features a plug for the Southern Poverty Law Center (founded
EXTD= by a true hero, Morris Dees), so one can make a difference as we
EXTD=ll as be entertained. Please, Rhino & Warner: next re-issue Sammy
EXTD='s live album w/ Sam Butera & the Witnesses, "When the Feeling Hi

EXTD=ad to know when to leave the stage...leave the crowd begging for
EXTD=more. This recording is taken from a time when Sammy Davis, Jr. f
EXTD=elt it did NOT apply to him!\nWhile this is a great recording fro
EXTD=m the beloved Sands Hotel (Rat PAck Central) in 1967, it is a lit
EXTD=tle too-MUCH Sam. (Remember that Frank had just released his 2 LP
EXTD= set "Sinatra @ the Sands" and it was a huge hit. Sammy was not t
EXTD=o be outdone!)\n\nThe finest thing to say overall about this reco
EXTD=rding is that Sam is backed up by Buddy Rich's extraordinary 1967
EXTD= Big Band. That was one tight, swinging group of guys and they se
EXTD=t the Sands afire with their arrangements.\n\nThis may be a bit m
