EXTD=The Singles Collection - Disc 1 of 4\n2002 EMI Records, Ltd.\n\nO
EXTD=riginally Released December 10, 2002\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Peggy
EXTD=Lee was a renaissance woman, a multi-talented singer and composer
EXTD= who achieved popular as well as critical success. Short of a com
EXTD=plete recordings box set, The Singles Collection is the best Pegg
EXTD=y Lee career anthology yet, and a big improvement over the oddly
EXTD=compiled and sequenced 1998 box set Miss Peggy Lee. The Singles C
EXTD=ollection isn't complete -- Lee released hundreds of singles -- a
EXTD=nd it doesn't come close to compiling all of her hits (in fact, i
EXTD=t doesn't even compile all of her Top Ten hits), but it does offe
EXTD=r a chronological journey through her catalog from her early days
EXTD= with Benny Goodman and Bob Crosby all the way up to the '70s whe
EXTD=n she recorded for A&M. Although Capitol Records produced the box
EXTD= set, the selections include cuts from other labels, including Le
EXTD=e's Decca Records period. Nearly half of the box's 110 tracks are
EXTD= new to CD, and collectors will appreciate the glimpse into the s
EXTD=tudio afforded by a handful of bonus tracks that include false st
EXTD=arts and studio chatter. Lee may have enjoyed commercial success
EXTD=with "ethnic" novelties ("Maana" being the foremost example) and
EXTD= upbeat pop songs, but it is her interpretations of serious jazz
EXTD=and pop tunes that have made her a contender for the title of Bes
EXTD=t Vocalist of the 20th Century. The Singles Collection follows he
EXTD=r artistic growth and demonstrates the breadth of her interpretiv
EXTD=e abilities, which gives a better picture of Lee's artistry than
EXTD=any single album or inferior anthology could do. -- Greg Adams\n
EXTD=\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nOver thirty years of Peggy's sensat
EXTD=ional music, December 28, 2002\nReviewer: P D Harris "Pete the mu
EXTD=sic and horse racing fan" (Leicester England)\n \nThis se
EXTD=t is one of the best-presented boxed sets I've come across. There
EXTD= are extensive notes, a discography, pictures of LP sleeves and o
EXTD=ther pictures too. The set opens like a hardback book, with the C
EXTD=D's on the inside of the front and back covers. The music is domi
EXTD=nated by her years on Capitol (especially the 1940's), but begins
EXTD= with three tracks from her Benny Goodman days, followed by two w
EXTD=ith Bob Crosby. What can a woman do? (track 6 on CD 1) is the fir
EXTD=st time we hear Peggy's own music, but the rest of that CD and th
EXTD=e other three CD's concentrate entirely on her studio singles, up
EXTD= to Some cats know (1975), her last new single. Senza fine, a Jap
EXTD=anese single in 2001 that was originally recorded in 1964, plus f
EXTD=ive studio out-takes, including false starts and rehearsals, comp
EXTD=lete the set.\nEven on 4 CD's, it is not possible to include all
EXTD=Peggy's singles, but it is clear that a serious effort has been m
EXTD=ade to include singles which had not been previously available on
EXTD= CD - there are almost fifty of them, plus one song, Moments like
EXTD= this, which was going to be a single but was never released. Liv
EXTD=e and album versions of the song have been previously released, b
EXTD=ut the original single version is available here for the first ti
EXTD=me ever. \n\nOf the previously released material, the most obviou
EXTD=s omission is Riders in the sky, which was an American number two
EXTD= hit for Peggy in 1949, but this is readily available on other co
EXTD=mpilations. All the tracks that are absolutely essential - Manana
EXTD=, The folks who live on the hill, Fever and Is that all there is?
EXTD= - are included. Black coffee was never released as a single, so
EXTD=does not qualify.\n\nThis is a cleverly compiled set which is des
EXTD=igned to include as much as possible for Peggy's committed fans w
EXTD=ho have a lot of her CD's already (I have over 20), while making
EXTD=it an attractive purchase for somebody who just wants one big col
EXTD=lection of Peggy's music.\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nSublime
EXTD=Release of Miss Peggy Lee!, December 17, 2002\nReviewer: F. Barto
EXTD=n "Forrest W. Barton" (Newport, WA USA)\n\nThis is one of the bes
EXTD=t boxed sets I've ever purchased. With it's tremendous photos, in
EXTD=formation (a complete discography), and top-notch remastering, co
EXTD=mbined with extremely rare tracks, you cannot go wrong.\nWhile I
EXTD=have been extremely grateful to EMI in England for issuing Miss L
EXTD=ee's albums, intact, with their twofer series, I am equally delig
EXTD=hted to see her SINGLES being given the treatment they deserve. W
EXTD=hen you consider that almost HALF of this box set featured single
EXTD=s NEVER heard until now, that is a real testament to the thought
EXTD=behind this release. From the start with Benny Goodman, to the en
EXTD=d, the sound has never been better, and I have ALL of Peggy Lee's
EXTD= releases. \n\nTo borrow from the liner notes, this is not a comp
EXTD=lete singles, of all labels, as that would be around TEN CDs!! Th
EXTD=at wouldn't phase me, but probably would others. So this set conc
EXTD=entrates on the hard to find, or impossible, recordings released
EXTD=as singles. What a tremendous treat, so much better than her "Mis
EXTD=s Peggy Lee" box set. This set is chronological, which I love. Yo
EXTD=u can hear her voice maturing with each track, and there are way
EXTD=too many standouts to even mention here. The beautiful photos, li
EXTD=ner notes, and SOUND, make this a must have for all the fans of M
EXTD=iss Peggy Lee!! GRAB IT!!
