EXTD=, 1986\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: "Walking to New Orleans" might be a
EXTD=more touching song post-Hurricane Katrina than it ever was in 198
EXTD=6. With thousands of New Orleanians displaced across the United S
EXTD=tates after the hurricane lay wreck across much of the gulf coast
EXTD= in August of 2005, the song offers comfort, though bittersweet,
EXTD=to those whom, even as the years pass, will still not be able to
EXTD=return to their homes. "Walking to New Orleans" accompanies "Blue
EXTD=berry Hill," "Ain't That a Shame" and other Fats Domino hits on L
EXTD=ive from Austin, TX, released nearly a year after the devastation
EXTD= of Hurricane Katrina. Recorded live for Austin City Limits on Oc
EXTD=tober 22, 1986, Fats Domino's "Live from Austin, TX" is one of th
EXTD=e best live recordings available from the artist. Released 20 yea
EXTD=rs after it was recorded, Fats Domino fans should rejoice. From t
EXTD=he nostalgic charm of the songs featured to the impeccable produc
EXTD=tion quality, Live from Austin, TX is a treasure. Somehow, the al
EXTD=bum captures Domino's charismatic presence to the point where it
EXTD=seems to pluck his smiling, plump self up from his piano bench an
EXTD=d put him right next to the listener. The heavy horn section in e
EXTD=ach song is a complement to Domino's rich vocals and Southern cha
EXTD=rm. Released post-Hurricane Katrina, the album perhaps has more m
EXTD=eaning today. Fats Domino is an icon -- one among many -- of 20th
EXTD= century New Orleans music. Though some might say the food is kin
EXTD=g, music is essentially New Orleans' greatest export. Therefore,
EXTD=one of the most painful blows dealt by Katrina to the Big Easy wa
EXTD=s the displacement of thousands of musicians, many of whom had li
EXTD=ved in New Orleans their entire lives and used the city as a Muse
EXTD= as well as a life blood. In Katrina's aftermath, many of the cit
EXTD=y's quintessential musical artists, like Irma Thomas and Doc Wats
EXTD=on (as well as those lesser known outside the region), were force
EXTD=d to relocate throughout the United States. Domino stayed. In the
EXTD= days after the hurricane, the then-77-year-old musician had to b
EXTD=e rescued from his home in New Orleans' Lower Ninth Ward; one of
EXTD=the areas hardest hit by flooding after levees failed. In 2006, D
EXTD=omino was chosen as a headliner for the first post-Katrina New Or
EXTD=leans Jazz & Heritage Festival. The event was remarkable, and the
EXTD= choice of Domino as the artist to be featured on the official fe
EXTD=stival poster extended the sense of pride felt by New Orleanians
EXTD=for their city. Unfortunately, when it came time for him to perfo
EXTD=rm, it was announced that he was too ill. Instead, Lionel Richie
EXTD=was to take his place. Disappointment was as thick as the humidit
EXTD=y, but Domino did take the stage, if only to wave to the audience
EXTD=. He might not be feeling up to performing live at this stage of
EXTD=his life, but thankfully Live from Austin, TX provides an excepti
EXTD=onal listening experience that is not subject to natural disaster

EXTD=Austin, Texas series gets a taste of New Orleans on it latest rel
EXTD=ease. Fats Domino, synonymous with New Orleans, rips it up on the
EXTD= Austin City Limits stage during this amazing performance. This L
EXTD=ive From Austin, Texas performance includes all his classic songs
EXTD= from Blueberry Hill to I'm Walking and Ain't That a Shame. Also

EXTD=w Captured On DVD, August 9, 2006\nReviewer: Todd Baptista (Westp
EXTD=ort, MA USA)\nOriginally broadcast on PBS-TV's Austin City Limits
EXTD= in 1987, this performance is among Domino's finest on film, a 17
EXTD=-track fast-paced romp through his biggest hits and several seldo
EXTD=m-heard classics. The sound and video transfer is excellent and D
EXTD=omino is in fine voice throughout. The band, including Dave Barth
EXTD=olomew, Lee Allen, Herb Hardesty, and the great, underrated bass
EXTD=Erving Charles, is the same dynamic lineup that toured extensivel
EXTD=y with Fats in the 1980s. \nFour songs have been added to the ori
EXTD=ginal lineup that was broadcast on TV- "I'm In Love Again"/"Honey
EXTD= Chile", "Three Nights A Week", "All By Myself", and "Let The Fou
EXTD=r Winds Blow" where the singer-pianist uncharacteristically blows
EXTD= the opening lyric lines. Two minor issues keep this from getting
EXTD= 5 stars. The compilers decided to move "Blueberry Hill" from sec
EXTD=ond to 14th in the running order, but in doing so they leave Fats
EXTD= saying "I'm going to stick with songs starting with B" after "I'
EXTD=m Walkin'". It's trivial- but sloppy. Also, inexplicably, this DV
EXTD=D, at 50 minutes, does not include three songs from the original
EXTD=TV broadcast- "I'm Gonna Be A Wheel Someday", the frantic instrum
EXTD=ental "Swanee River Hop", and the 11-minute "When The Saints Go M
EXTD=archin' In"/"Sentimental Journey" finale that closed all of Domin
EXTD=o's shows. The material could have easily fit onto the disc. Stil
EXTD=l, these minor quibbles should not stop fans from picking up this
EXTD= DVD as a fine example of Fats Domino and his band in concert.\n\n
EXTD=AMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW (DVD)\nThe King of New Orleans holds c
EXTD=ourt in Austin, Texas!, August 27, 2006\nReviewer: Calvin Stout (
EXTD=Des Moines, Iowa - USA)\nThis DVD available performance is over 2
EXTD=0 years-old and it still \nbrought tears of joy watching it. Fats
EXTD= Domino was 58 years old when he performed on Austin City Limits.
EXTD= It might as well have been 1949 or 1959. Fats is one of an extre
EXTD=mly few, and I do mean extremely few, artists who sound in a live
EXTD= performance just as they do on their original recordings. Many o
EXTD=f the great players who have been a part of Fats' recording caree
EXTD=r were on hand for this concert. Dave Bartholomew, Lee Allen, Fre
EXTD=ddie Kemp and the still "master of the sax" Herb Hardesty. \nFats
EXTD= and his crew were in top shape for this affair and they most obv
EXTD=iously were having fun. Of course, in a 17 song concert \nthere w
EXTD=ere some great hits that had to be missed. Most notably absent we
EXTD=re the top 10 hits "Valley Of Tears" and its flip side top 10 hit
EXTD= "It's You I Love". Also no time for "Whole Lotta Lovin' or "Be M
EXTD=y Guest". But it was great to witness his perfomances of other to
EXTD=p 20 classics "My Blue Heaven", "Let The Four Winds Blow", "My Gi
EXTD=rl Josephine" "Three Nights A Week" and the vastly undervalued "I
EXTD='m Ready. Fats didn't forget the pre-"Blueberry Hill" hits either
EXTD=. "Poor Me", "All My Myself" and the top 10 hit "Ain't That A Sha
EXTD=me" (Incorectly labeled "Ain't It A Shame" when it was released i
EXTD=n 1955). \nYou don't even have to be a Fats fanatic, such as I, t
EXTD=o enjoy this DVD 100%. If you've ever heard a Fats Domino song th
EXTD=at should be enough motivation for you to pick up this DVD.\n\nHa
