EXTD= REVIEW: Crying was released in 1962, after Roy Orbison hit the T
EXTD=op 40 with Sings Lonely and Blue. This one hit number 21. With Fr
EXTD=ed Foster once again producing, the strings that colored so much
EXTD=of Sings Lonely and Blue are present here as well, as are the Ani
EXTD=ta Kerr Singers. The horn section features a pair of saxophones -
EXTD=- yes, Boots Randolph is still in the house -- and a trumpet. Cha
EXTD=rlie McCoy makes an appearance on harmonica here, Floyd Cramer is
EXTD= still the session pianist, and songwriter Boudleaux Bryant is on
EXTD=e of the session's guitarists, as are Scotty Moore, Harold Bradle
EXTD=y, and Grady Martin. Musically, this is perhaps the most sophisti
EXTD=cated of the sets recorded for Monument between 1961 and 1963 --
EXTD=the set that follows this one is In Dreams. The material, beginni
EXTD=ng with the title track (a number two single) is exceptional -- e
EXTD=ven for a Roy Orbison record. Other tunes here include an excepti
EXTD=onal read of "The Great Pretender"; Bryant's "Love Hurts" (which
EXTD=is the version to beat) and "She Wears My Ring"; and Orbison's ow
EXTD=n tunes (written with Joe Melson) "Running Scared," "Loneliness,"
EXTD= "Summer Song," "Lana," "Wedding Day," "Let's Make a Memory," and
EXTD= "Nite Life." Whoa! From slow strollers like "Wedding Day" (doo w
EXTD=op tunes without the "doo wah") to pumped-up rockers like "Dance,
EXTD=" the dramatic pop of "Let's Make a Memory" (with Cramer laying d
EXTD=own that funky country backdrop on his upright piano), the sheer
EXTD=velvet darkness of tracks like "Night Life," and the number one s
EXTD=mash "Running Scared," this is a stunner from top to bottom. The
EXTD=beautifully remastered Legacy Edition contains four bonus tracks,
EXTD= including the single "Dream Baby" (written by Cindy Walker), whi
EXTD=ch hit number four on the pop chart; a fantastic read of "Let the
EXTD= Good Times Roll," which proved Orbison could lay down the hard R
EXTD=&B; "Candy Man," which scored at 25 in 1962; and an obscure Orbis
EXTD=on-Melson dramatic broken love ballad called "The Actress," which
EXTD= was issued as a B-side. Taken as a whole, these 16 tracks are a
EXTD=monolith of inspiration and excellence. Orbison was on a roll in
EXTD=the early '60s, and the recorded evidence bears out why. These re
EXTD=issues by Legacy mark the very first time these titles have been
EXTD=on CD, and they are presented beautifully. Highly recommended. --
EXTD= Thom Jurek\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Roy Orbison's second album was
EXTD=above-average considering the slight standards of the time, but w
EXTD=as a fairly slight effort nonetheless. In its favor, the album fe
EXTD=atures nearly all original material by Orbison and some of the wr
EXTD=iters who frequently tailored songs for him, such as Boudleaux an
EXTD=d Felice Bryant and Joe Melson. The trademark early Orbison produ
EXTD=ction flourishes, with swooping strings and full vocal choruses,
EXTD=are also present. What's missing is truly first-rate songwriting.
EXTD= With the exception of "Love Hurts," the title track, and the epi
EXTD=c hit "Running Scared," most of the cuts lean toward the Big O's
EXTD=more sentimental side, and are pleasantly forgettable. Of the obs
EXTD=cure cuts here, the best are the uptempo "Nite Life" and "Let's M
EXTD=ake A Memory," with its bouncing string arrangement, but neither
EXTD=could be classified among his best early work. -- Richie Unterber
