EXTD=Originally Released October 7, 2003\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW:  Jet's
EXTD=Get Born is a seriously rocking album. It comes off as a mix betw
EXTD=een the White Stripes' bluesy insouciance and AC/DC's cockeyed sw
EXTD=agger. Toss in some New York Dolls strut, maybe some of Sweet's j
EXTD=ailbait philosophizing, definitely some of Oasis' look-at-me atti
EXTD=tude, some of the Verve's sense of grandeur, and you've got somet
EXTD=hing to impress your friends as you blast it out of your car spea
EXTD=kers on a Friday night. There are a lot of other bands traveling
EXTD=a similar path these days and it is hard to explain why this reco
EXTD=rd works so well when so many others sound weak and studied. Mayb
EXTD=e it is because they hail from the no-nonsense Australian rock tr
EXTD=adition. Maybe it is the tough, but clean, production by Dave Sar
EXTD=dy. Most likely it is the songs. They are catchy with singalong c
EXTD=horuses, with lots of "hey"s and hand claps and glam stomp beats.
EXTD= "Rollover D.J.," "Get What You Need," and "Get Me Outta Here" ar
EXTD=e tight, raw, and flashy rockers. Nic Cester has a perfect rock v
EXTD=oice: tough and gritty, but not screechy. He croons pretty well,
EXTD=too, as he shows on the wonderfully epic "Champagne Supernova"-st
EXTD=yled ballad "Radio Song." It is a sure sign that you are dealing
EXTD=with a band that has it all together when the ballads are as good
EXTD= as the rockers. "Look What You've Done" is a piano-based weeper
EXTD=that only needs some swelling strings to launch it into Guns N' R
EXTD=oses territory, "Move On" is an early-'70s Stones country ballad
EXTD=with some fine slide work. The only track that flat out stinks is
EXTD= the silly and mean-spirited "Cold Hard Bitch," which takes an il
EXTD=l-advised (and near fatal) trip down Nazareth lane and leaves the
EXTD= listener with a foul taste in their mouth. The placement of Jet'
EXTD=s sweetest ballad right after it is the only thing that saves the
EXTD= album. And it is an album worth saving. Get Born is a very promi
EXTD=sing debut by a band that steals from all the right places, rocks
EXTD= non-ironically -- even epically at times -- and sounds great bla

EXTD=\nWhenever the proverbial Next Big Thing rolls around, it usually
EXTD= takes a few different bands to push the style into the mainstrea
EXTD=m. With grunge, Nirvana lit the spark, but it was Pearl Jam, Soun
EXTD=dgarden, and Stone Temple Pilots who convinced everyone the Seatt
EXTD=le sound was no fluke. In the case of the New Rock phenomenon, th
EXTD=e Strokes brought style and the White Stripes added artiness, but
EXTD= with GET BORN, Jet put all the pieces together.Perhaps the first
EXTD= band of the genre to completely absorb and effectively reconfigu
EXTD=re classic rock & roll influences without a trace of winking iron
EXTD=y, Jet not only swaggers like the Stones and pouts like Iggy Pop,
EXTD= but injects sorely needed doses of romanticism and variety into
EXTD=a style that otherwise often seems perilously close to oldies rev
EXTD=ivalism. The most immediate difference between the Australian fou
EXTD=rsome and their shaggy-haired brethren is the band's talent for s
EXTD=oaring sad songs. On the gorgeous "Look What You've Done" and "Ra
EXTD=dio Song," Jet proves that trashy guitars and neo-garage sneering
EXTD= are not the only way to rock, in the process satisfying both fan
EXTD=s of piano-driven ballads and the much edgier NYC sound.\n\nAmazo
EXTD=n.com Editorial Review\nSometimes having good, original ideas is
EXTD=the worst thing you can do in rock music. To paraphrase Jim Dicki
EXTD=nson on the Beastie Boys, rock and roll is theft, and it's not so
EXTD= much about whether or not one steals but why, how much and how w
EXTD=ell (i.e. from whom). Riff-heavy in all the right ways, this is a
EXTD= very well-produced retro-rock record with handclaps, catchy chor
EXTD=uses, and plenty of attitude. They freely cop from AC/DC, the Sto
EXTD=nes, the Verve, Oasis, Humble Pie, Aerosmith, Black Crowes, and M
EXTD=ooney Suzuki, and they do it very well. The only problems with th
EXTD=e album lie in the words, and in the softer material. Most of the
EXTD= lyrics are so banal ("Now you don't need money with a face like
EXTD=that, do ya") they were seemingly written by some newfangled song
EXTD=writing program set to "1973." And half the album consists of bal
EXTD=lads that are just pretty good: the Oasis-y "Look What You've Don
EXTD=e," the Pink Floyd -esque "Timothy" and the Small Faces-ish "Move
EXTD= On.". But it's the mid-to-uptempo stompers that this group excel
EXTD=s at. --Mike McGonigal \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nToo Many B
EXTD=allads, October 17, 2004 \nReviewer:    Mr. Music "soma137" (Sydn
EXTD=ey, Australia)\nI really want to give this album 4 or 5 stars but
EXTD= I just can't. The thing is that I saw Jet at the Annandale Hotel
EXTD= in Sydney a few months before they started attracting all of the
EXTD= hype that now surrounds them. They were playing to about 50-100
EXTD=people and the weren't even headlining - they were the second act
EXTD= on a bill of three. Anyway, half way through their set, I looked
EXTD= over to my friend and we were both speechless. These guys were a
EXTD=mazing - the energy of the show and the songs, what great tunes!!
EXTD= We didn't even stay for the last act - we left, knowing that we
EXTD=had seen a band that was going to be really special (probably the
EXTD= best gig I have ever been to where I didn't know what to expect)
EXTD=. In the months that followed, anticipation grew for their debut
EXTD=album, but when it finally arrived it was kind of a let down. On
EXTD=the plus side, it's clear that "Are You Gonna Be My Girl?" is one
EXTD= of the best and most exciting singles of the last five years, or
EXTD= even decade. There are some other great rockers like "Cold Hard
EXTD=Bitch" and "Last Chance", but overall the album is weighed down t
EXTD=oo heavily by ballads. About half of the album is taken up by the
EXTD= slower songs and it simply doesn't work because these are not th
EXTD=e band's strength. These guys are not the Rolling Stones and at t
EXTD=his stage in their career they can't pull off a "Wild Horses" - s
EXTD=ongs like "Move On" and "Look What You've Done" are pale imitatio
EXTD=ns. So ironically, the problem with this album is that it doesn't
EXTD= rock enough. When it does, it threatens to be spectacular and th
EXTD=e potential of the band shines through. On that night at the Anna
EXTD=ndale, I don't remember them playing one ballad - if they did, th
EXTD=ey certainly didn't play more than one or two. This album should
EXTD=have been just all out, kick-arse rockers from start to finish an
EXTD=d it would have been fantastic. Instead, they play too much to th
EXTD=eir weaknesses. Even on the rockers, they haven't quite captured
EXTD=the rush of seeing them live (with the exception of "Aer You Gonn
EXTD=a Be My Girl?"). So, it's a good album, but ultimately a disappoi
EXTD=ntment when I remember how blown away I was when I saw them live.
EXTD= I'll treasure that memory and hope that in the future they can c
EXTD=apture that on record. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review\nIs it 1969

EXTD=Australian group Jet lived up to their name when they sonically s
EXTD=wooped onto the music scene with their first full-length CD - "Ge
EXTD=t Born." The lead-off single - Are You Gonna Be My Girl? - is sim
EXTD=ply one of the most compelling rock songs in recent memory. Yes,
EXTD=it's highly derivative of earlier rock music, but it's brilliant.
EXTD= How many TV shows, movies, and products immediately used the son
EXTD=g in ads? Sure, it burned out from overexposure pretty quickly, b
EXTD=ut fortunately the CD is filled with equally gripping rock. \n\nT
EXTD=he band deftly combines elements of 60s and 70s rock (especially
EXTD=the Stones and the Who) but adds touches of more recent rock for
EXTD=a fresh sound. For example, "Rollover D.J." is reminiscent of Oas
EXTD=is. "Move On" is a mid-tempo song that incorporates an alt-countr
EXTD=y sound, a la Wilco. "Timothy" is an interesting ballad with lyri
EXTD=cs that could have been written by David Bowie during his Ziggy S
EXTD=tardust period. "Radio Song" has some nice prog-rock touches that
EXTD= wouldn't sound out of place on an early Radiohead CD. "Lazy Gun"
EXTD= is conceivably the pinnacle of the CD, as it changes tempo and s
EXTD=tyle, weaving all over the place; it also, perhaps tellingly, sou
EXTD=nds the least like anybody else. The lyrics, though, seem to sum
EXTD=up Jet's philosophy - Change nothing/ Futures in/ Close the door/
EXTD= Wear a name/ Be the same/ Take some more. \n\nJet puts everythin
EXTD=g together so well that it's almost impossible to dislike this CD
EXTD=. Plus, let's face it, the artists they rip off are by and large
EXTD=past their prime - either disbanded or making musty music. Judged
EXTD= on its own merits, "Get Born" is an exceedingly strong rock reco
EXTD=rd. Of course, Jet now faces the tremendous challenge of followin
EXTD=g up this CD and standing apart from the other raft of similar re
EXTD=tro-rockers, including the Strokes, the Hives, and the Vines. Onl
EXTD=y time will tell whether the band will establish its own identity
EXTD= or become stale. In the meantime, this CD is highly recommended.
