EXTD=com Editorial Review (''Brick'' box)\nTalking Heads' 30th anniver
EXTD=sary is commemorated in typically artful style here, sonically up
EXTD=grading their eight, era-defining albums via bonus-packed Dual Di
EXTD=scs and encasing them in a molded white plastic box intricately e
EXTD=mbossed with the band's song titles. Each disc contains complete
EXTD=album tracks and bonus cuts remastered in High Resolution Stereo
EXTD=on its CD side, while the DVD programming on the flip offers up t
EXTD=he audio tracks in expansive new 5.1 Surround Sound mixes, with a
EXTD=ll of the sonic upgrading personally supervised by Heads drummer
EXTD=Jerry Harrison. Those long overdue audio improvements alone would
EXTD= make it an attractive set, but fans of the band will find its we
EXTD=alth of bonus music (various B-sides and previously unreleased ou
EXTD=ttakes) and video (including a number of rare live clips seeing t
EXTD=heir first release here) supplements equally intriguing. \n\nBonu
EXTD=s musical highlights include four rhythmically-charged, unfinishe
EXTD=d Remain in Light outtakes (including one that eventually evolved
EXTD= into the band's signature "Once in a Lifetime") that allow insig
EXTD=htful glimpses into Eno's innovative production techniques on the
EXTD= album, alternate versions of "Cities," "Life During Wartime" and
EXTD= "Mind" from Fear of Music, a countrified version of "Thank You F
EXTD=or Sending Me an Angel" from More Songs About.. and a strangely m
EXTD=uted early version of another Heads staple, Speaking in Tongue's
EXTD="Burning Down the House." An early demo of "And She Was" from Lit
EXTD=tle Creatures demostrates that the whole of a glorius pop song ca
EXTD=n be the assembly of its simple parts. While the additional visua
EXTD=l materials (especially the raw early performance clips) are a we
EXTD=lcome addition to the Heads' canon, they're also something of a t
EXTD=radeoff: a few of the band's videos are conspicuously absent, inc
EXTD=luding Remain in Light's "Once in a Lifetime." But overlooking a
EXTD=couple of the band's better known promotional moments in favor of
EXTD= revealing new musical treasures and vastly improved, state-of-th
EXTD=e-art audio scarcely blunts the appeal of this rewarding career o
EXTD=verview. -- Jerry McCulley \n\nAmazon.com Album Description (''Br
EXTD=ick'' box)\nFormed in the mid-70's by art school chums David Byrn
EXTD=e, Chris Franz, and Tina Weymouth-and ex-Modern lover Jerry Harri
EXTD=son-Talking Heads rose out of the CBGB punk crucible and proved t
EXTD=hemselves one of the most artistically adventurous and influentia
EXTD=l bands ever. Their visionary, polyrhyhmic sound fused elements i
EXTD=ncluding rock, funk, and punk with diverse world beats, avant-gar
EXTD=de minimalism, and pure pop genius. Inducted into the Rock and Ro
EXTD=ll Hall of Fame in 2002, the band and their groundbreaking repert
EXTD=oire are celebrated in Rhino's deluxe DualDisc upgrade of their c
EXTD=atalog. Now their critically praised recordings can be reexperien
EXTD=ced as never before, with new DVD-A Surround mixes personally sup
EXTD=ervised by Jerry Harrison. \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review (''Bric
EXTD=k'' box)\nI'm in "Overload", November 18, 2005\nReviewer: Wayne K
EXTD=lein "Wayne Klein" (Fairfield, CA United States)\nThere are very
EXTD=few bands where I own their entire output. Talking Heads is one o
EXTD=f them. Why? Like many pivotal and seminal bands they made memora
EXTD=ble music. This collection of the band's eight studio albums come
EXTD=s in the dual disc format with CD audio on one side plus (yea!) b
EXTD=onus tracks, extended remixes and outtakes. The other side featur
EXTD=es the entire album remixed in surround sound format with videos,
EXTD= photo galleries and other enticements. I noticed that some folks
EXTD= complained about the Dualdiscs not playing on their players. My
EXTD=guess is that if your player is more than a couple of years old,
EXTD=it may not play this format or just have a difficult time finding
EXTD= the instructions on how to play. It's a pretty common problem in
EXTD= situations like this. Why four stars and not five? Because the H
EXTD=eads eight albums vary a bit in quality. All of them are worthwhi
EXTD=le but some or better written or more groundbreaking than others.
EXTD= \n\nThe good news--the audio on the CD sound blows away the prev
EXTD=ious CDs issued in the early 90's. There's better dynamic range w
EXTD=hich benefits all the albums but two of my favorites in particula
EXTD=r "Remain in Light" and "Fear of Music". The other CDs sound much
EXTD=, much better with the sound having greater clarity and better pr
EXTD=esence. While many of the bonus tracks having been previously rel
EXTD=eased ("Sugar on My Tounge" and "Saxes and Violins" in particular
EXTD=) there are some from the boxed set and two CD best of set that a
EXTD=ren't on here. We do get early versions of "Road to Nowhere", "An
EXTD=d She Was", an extended version of "Television Man","Two Note Swi
EXTD=vel" (and unfinished outtake from "Speaking in Tongues"), "Burnin
EXTD=g Down the House" (Alternate version, three outtakes from "Remain
EXTD= in Light", an acoustic "Psycho Killer", "Love-Building on Fire",
EXTD= "I Feel it in My Heart" and four alternate versions of tracks fr
EXTD=om "More". \n\nThe bad news--The CD side of "Fear of Music" won't
EXTD= play on a lot of computers and some CD players (evidently some h
EXTD=ome CD players as well) but that's not the case with all of these
EXTD=. I didn't have any problems with the rest of the releases. I hav
EXTD=e written Rhino to find out what they are going to do about the a
EXTD=uthoring problem for "Fear of Music" (which is why it won't play
EXTD=on a lot of devices). Once I hear back, I'll report if there will
EXTD= be a replacement disc issued. I haven't had problems with the CD
EXTD= side for any of the other discs and since I usually listen to th
EXTD=e CD side in the car, that could be an issue (for more folks than
EXTD= me I might add). \n\n***Just an update--I contacted Rhino and th
EXTD=ere are no plans to repress "Fear of Music" if there are problems
EXTD= with your CD player or computer. It appears the CD/DVD hybrid is
EXTD= not compatable with a lot of players. That's too bad as Rhino wi
EXTD=ll probably lose a few sales due to this. Rhino plans on releasin
EXTD=g these titles individually in the Spring of 2006.*** \n\nThe CD
EXTD=artwork doesn't exactly duplicate the original albums or CDs them
EXTD=selves. The discs are issued with a new booklet but the backside
EXTD=of the holders are blank (as are the spines on the holders). Clea
EXTD=rly the holder was supposed to act as an "art object" (much as th
EXTD=e latest incarnation of the "Best of" with the large book is supp
EXTD=osed to be a coffee table art book). Still, it would have been ni
EXTD=ce to have the option of knowing what CD you were pulling out of
EXTD=the case. \n\nThe DVD side has all eight albums remixed in 5.1 Do
EXTD=lby Digital Surround Sound by Head Jerry Harrison. There are also
EXTD= live video performances, videos, photo galleries and the like. H
EXTD=arrison does a great job in remixing the albums. The first album
EXTD=recorded only in 16 track in particular sounds surprisingly stron
EXTD=g in this incarnation. The best albums though in terms of sound a
EXTD=re those involving complex arrangements or polyrhythmic interplay
EXTD= such as "Fear of Music", "Remain in Light", "Speaking in Tongues
EXTD=" and "Naked". That's not to say that albums like "Little Creatur
EXTD=es" don't sound great--they do and Harrison does a great job of r
EXTD=emixing them it's just that in terms of textures and sonics those
EXTD= albums lend themselves well to the format. If you're watching TV
EXTD= while listening there is a single static graphic that appears on
EXTD= screen (all of them quite interesting looking and featuring the
EXTD=unmistakable Heads arty bend)with the song title. No lyrics appea
EXTD=r as you're watching the video (unlike, say, the "Crowded House"
EXTD=Dualdisc release). It's kind of interesting to listen to the 5.1
EXTD=mix in stereo as well because different elements come out and are
EXTD= accentuated creating a slightly different mix to the sound. \n\n
EXTD=The videos include live performances of the band (previously unre
EXTD=leased on DVD) with the "Fear of Music" and "Remain in Light" mat
EXTD=erial played by the augmented line up featuring guitarist Adrian
EXTD=Belew (their best line up in my opinion)doing "Cities", "I Zimbra
EXTD=" \n\nEach Dualdisc comes in a CD like case with a white plastic
EXTD=backing. The titles of the CDs aren't on the individual holders w
EXTD=hich is a bit of a pain. The booklets feature new photos, lyrics,
EXTD= comments from contemporaries (such as support member current Kin
EXTD=g Crimson/Bear Adrian Belew and XTC's Andy Partridge). There's al
EXTD=so miniature limited edition art prints that illustrate a song or
EXTD= lyric enclosed in the booklet. They are kind of small so be care
EXTD=ful or you'll lose them. \n\nMy only complaint--I wish that all t
EXTD=he"new" tracks from the two disc best of had been included as bon
EXTD=us tracks on the discs or, at the very least, be included as a li
EXTD=mited edition Dualdisc available as part of the package for "Bric
EXTD=k". Other than that, Rhino has done a great job here. The outside
EXTD= packaging featuring the titles of Talking Head songs is a hard p
EXTD=lastic shell within which all the Dualdiscs fit. It's a bit bigge
EXTD=r than a CD which makes it pretty easy to store with your other b
EXTD=oxed sets on a shelf or with other CDs. Kudos to Rhino and the He
EXTD=ads on such an excellent job with the remastering/packaging. \n\n
EXTD=Amazon.com Customer Review (''Brick'' box)\nThe double-edge of Du
EXTD=al Disc..... ouch!, October 31, 2005\nReviewer: M. Svetinsky "Mir
EXTD=oLab" (Los Angeles) \nI won't waste time commenting on the music
EXTD=here, cause if you are considering buying the Brick, you must be
EXTD=a fan already. Rather, I'll comment on the odd behaviours of thes
EXTD=e Dual Discs. \n\n1.) The CD side plays on only 1 of my 4 home pl
EXTD=ayers... a very old Sony changer, but they don't play on a newer
EXTD=Sony SACD player, nor on my Marantz Universal player or Toshiba D
EXTD=VD player. Strangely, I can play or rip the CDs in my Mac G5, and
EXTD= they do play in both my car players. \n\n2.) No Dolby Digital 5.
EXTD=1 tracks. I am no fan of the sound of DD, but for people without
EXTD=DVD-Audio players, you are out of luck on hearing the amazing 5.1
EXTD= mixes. With other DualDiscs, i've been burned the other way....
EXTD=only getting a DolbyDigital 5.1 mix that sounds worse than the no
EXTD=rmal CD tracks. Dual Disc labelling is seriously misleading!! \n\n
EXTD=3.) The DVD-Audio 5.1 mixes are truly amazing, in both mixing and
EXTD= sound quality, but oddly, the center channel is out-of-phase wit
EXTD=h the Front Left & Rights. I have never heard this with any other
EXTD= 5.1 DVD-A or SACD discs, so it is not a problem with my system.
EXTD=I find the sound to be much better with the center turned OFF, as
EXTD= the phase cancellation sucks the life out of the front channels.
EXTD= \n\nSO... the content is amazing, but Dual Discs are NOT. They a
EXTD=re a cruel joke that i will continue to fall for whenever i see o
EXTD=ne that I really really want. But if you have a DVD-A player, the
EXTD=n you must hear these discs! \n\nAmazon.com Customer Review (''Br
EXTD=ick'' box)\nsimply spectacular!, October 7, 2005\nReviewer: F. Ve
EXTD=ldkamp (Netherlands)\nAll eight official Talking Heads studio alb
EXTD=ums are collected here in a nice embossed plastic 'brick' on stat
EXTD=e-of-the-art DualDiscs. \n\nEach DualDisc contains a remastered s
EXTD=tereo mix on one side and a 5.1 dolby surround (DVD-A) mix of the
EXTD= other side. Each side comes with different bonus tracks, varying
EXTD= from outtakes to remixes, music videos and rare live video foota
EXTD=ge. \n\nOf course, like with every boxset, the collection is not
EXTD=complete - there are different alternate versions and outtakes on
EXTD= the previously released "Sand in the Vaseline" 2CD set and "Once
EXTD= in a Lifetime" boxset, but "Brick" offers a lot of new -and prev
EXTD=iously unreleased- material to keep you busy for a while. \n\nThe
EXTD= 5.1 surround mix - done by longtime Talking Heads producer Eric
EXTD='E.T.' Thorngren and Heads' keyboard player Jerry Harrison - is b
EXTD=y far the best surround mix I've ever heard. It beats 'new' surro
EXTD=und albums like the latest Beck and Bjork easily with an amazing
EXTD=mix that puts you in the perfect spot with the band playing just
EXTD=in front of you and effects (percussion!) haunting you from every
EXTD= corner of the room. And it all sounds natural! Try anything from
EXTD= "Remain in Light" or "Naked" (the bands most tense albums) in su
EXTD=rround and you know what I mean. \n\nBut also the less complicate
EXTD=d albums (Jerry added some nice linernotes on the 5.1 mixes to ev
EXTD=ery album) sound spectacular in surround; it's unbelievable that
EXTD=everything you hear now (handclaps, basslines, percussion, backgr
EXTD=ound vocals, soundeffects) was on the original records when they
EXTD=were first recorded - A lot of details were inaudible on the viny
EXTD=ls and previous CD releases, so even for the die-hard fans (and I
EXTD= consider myself one), there's a lot to explore on the new discs.
EXTD= \n\nEach DualDisc comes with linernotes, lyrics and a limited ed
EXTD=ition artprint (mostly reproductions of works from Frank Olinsky'
EXTD=s book "What the Songs Look Like). \n\nHighlights for me -besides
EXTD= rediscovering the entire Talking Heads backcatalogue in glorious
EXTD= surround sound and high-detailed stereo mixes- include old live
EXTD=video footage (a 3-piece Talking Heads with drummer Chris Frantz
EXTD=on Xylophone!), super-funky unreleased outtakes on "Remain in Lig
EXTD=ht", early versions of classic hits like "Road to Nowhere" and "A
EXTD=nd She Was" and a special extended version of "Burning Down the H
EXTD=ouse" in surround sound that was done especially for this release
EXTD=. \n\nThe DualDisks are scheduled for seperate release in January
EXTD= 2006, but if you want them all, "Brick" is for you. \n\nHalf.com

EXTD= 2005, this formidable box set collects all eight Talking Heads s
EXTD=tudio albums, presenting each one in remastered DualDisc format,
EXTD=which allows for enhanced sound, bonus videos, and a slew of prev
EXTD=iously unreleased tracks. Given that the revered New York City pr
EXTD=oto-punk band's entire 1977-'88 catalogue was in need of a sonic
EXTD=upgrade, BRICK is a heaven-sent for the group's fans. Frenetic ar
EXTD=t-funk classics like "Psycho Killer," "Life During Wartime," and
EXTD="Burning Down the House" are recast in pristine audio, along with
EXTD= worthwhile outtakes like the Afro-beat homage "Fela's Riff" and
EXTD=the ambient, down-tempo "Double Groove." Although some listeners
EXTD=may be content with a less-comprehensive collection, for the Talk
EXTD=ing Heads diehard this set is essential.\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: ('
EXTD='Speaking In Tongues'') Talking Heads found a way to open up the
EXTD=dense textures of the music they had developed with Brian Eno on
EXTD=their two previous studio albums for Speaking in Tongues, and wer
EXTD=e rewarded with their most popular album yet. Ten backup singers
EXTD=and musicians accompanied the original quartet, but somehow the s
EXTD=ound was more spacious, and the music admitted aspects of gospel,
EXTD= notably in the call-and-response of "Slippery People," and John
EXTD=Lee Hooker-style blues, on "Swamp." As usual, David Byrne determi
EXTD=nedly sang and chanted impressionistic, nonlinear lyrics, sometim
EXTD=es by mix-and-matching clichs ("No visible means of support and
EXTD=you have not seen nuthin' yet," andhe declared on "Burning Down t
EXTD=he House," andthe Heads' first Top Ten hit), and the songs' very
EXTD=lack of clear meaning was itself a lyrical subject. "Still don't
EXTD=make no sense," andByrne admitted in "Making Flippy Floppy," but
EXTD=by the next song, "Girlfriend Is Better," andthat had become an o
EXTD=rder -- "Stop making sense," andhe chanted over and over. Some of
EXTD= his charming goofiness had returned since the overly serious Rem
EXTD=ain in Light and Fear of Music, however, and the accompanying mus
EXTD=ic, filled with odd percussive and synthesizer sounds, could be u
EXTD=nusually light and bouncy. The album closer, "This Must Be the Pl
EXTD=ace (Naive Melody)," andeven sounded hopeful. Well, sort of. Desp
EXTD=ite their formal power, Talking Heads' last two albums seemed to
EXTD=have painted them into a corner, which may be why it took them th
EXTD=ree years to craft a follow-up, but on Speaking in Tongues, they
EXTD=found an open window and flew out of it. -- William Ruhlmann\n\nC
EXTD=MJ New Music Report (''Speaking In Tongues'')\nWhat's a Talking H
EXTD=eads album without surprises? Even the weak-kneed Fear Of Music a
EXTD=nd the necessarily retrospective The Name OW This Bend is Talking
EXTD= Heads charted new nations in the new wave landscape, coming off
EXTD=like pieces in a big jigsaw puzzle rather than pretty maids all i
EXTD=n a row. Cue up Speaking In Tongues and the image you first get i
EXTD=s Remain in Light, Part II. That's because the differences are in
EXTD=side the record, not on the surface. Scaled down to the original
EXTD=four members (minus producer/mentor/meddler Brian Eno), the group
EXTD= is free to work with a concept - Talking Heads as a band - it ha
EXTD=sn't explored since the `77 debut album. But not a band n the cla
EXTD=ssic sense of people with discrete functions: guitarist, drummer,
EXTD= bass-player and vocalist No, Jerry, Chris, Tina and David borrow
EXTD= from the mega-Head days the process of band as extended family.
EXTD=Each plays several instruments - and Byrne plays everything he ca
EXTD=n get his hands on - and a score of session musicians drop by, ea
EXTD=ch sitting in for a song or two. So, "Talking Heads" becomes an i
EXTD=dea, a framework for working in different combinations - except D
EXTD=avid Byrne sings. All the time. And on an album whose title sugge
EXTD=sts words, that shifts the focus to him. Speaking in tongues is g
EXTD=lossolalia: a gift from the Holy Spirit to reward belief and demo
EXTD=nstrate faith. And Byrne's singing recalls the first Biblical use
EXTD= of speech: Adam naming the animals to win dominion over them. By
EXTD=rne tries to maintain dominion in his own world, one where "gravi
EXTD=ty lets you down," where the sense of self is fragmented ("How ma
EXTD=ny people do you think I am"), where danger is everywhere: people
EXTD= "gonna burst into flame," people pulling guns, people pulling pl
EXTD=ugs, people with holes in their heads, people burning down the ho
EXTD=use. But "speaking in tongues" means using words that go beyond s
EXTD=peech, saying what cannot be said. And it's the music on this alb
EXTD=um that represents a world over which there is no dominion, offer
EXTD=ing new possibilities faster than Byrne can name them. There are
EXTD=pleasures among the dangers: going home, feet on the ground, to a
EXTD= "girlfriend with bows in her hair," a land of "colored lights an
EXTD=d shiny curtains." Pleasures beyond words. The band's fluid disco
EXTD=urse finally wins the day. "I don't mind some slight disorder," d
EXTD=ecides Byrne. striking out for a place "wilder than the place we
EXTD=live in" Talking Heads can get you there. \n 1978-1999 College M
