EXTD=GEORGE MICHAEL biography :\n\n\n\n\n\nb. Georgios (Yorgos) Kyriac
EXTD=os Panayiotou, 25 June 1963, Finchley, London, England. \n\n\n\n\n
EXTD=\nMICHAEL first served his pop apprenticeship in the million-sell
EXTD=ing duo WHAM!, the most commercially successful, teen-orientated
EXTD=group of the 80s. \n\n\n\n\n\nHis solo career was foreshadowed in
EXTD= 1984's 'Careless Whisper', a song about a promiscuous two-timer
EXTD=with the oddly attractive line: 'Guilty feet have got no rhythm'.
EXTD= By the time WHAM! split in 1986, MICHAELwas left with the unenvi
EXTD=able task of reinventing himself as a solo artist. The balladeeri
EXTD=ng 'Careless Whisper' had indicated a possible direction, but the
EXTD= initial problem was one of image. As a pin-up pop idol, MICHAEL
EXTD=had allowed himself to becomeapaste-board figure, best remembered
EXTD= for glorifying a hedonistic lifestyle and shoving shuttlecocks d
EXTD=own his shorts in concert. The rapid transition from dole queue r
EXTD=eject to Club Tropicana playboy had left a nasty taste in the mou
EXTD=ths of many music critics. Breaking the WHAM! icon was the great
EXTD=challenge of MICHAEL's solo career, and his finest and most decis
EXTD=ive move was to take a sabbatical before recording an album, to a
EXTD=llow time to put his old image to rest. In the meantime, he cut t
EXTD=he chart-topping 'A Different Corner', a song stylistically simil
EXTD=ar to 'Careless Whisper' and clearly designed to show off his tal
EXTD=ent as a serious singer-songwriter. Enlivening his alternate imag
EXTD=e as a blue-eyed soul singer, he teamed up with Aretha FRANKLIN f
EXTD=or the uplifting 'I Knew You Were Waiting', a transatlantic chart
EXTD= topper. \n\n\n\n\n\nMichael's re-emergence came in 1988, resplen
EXTD=dent in leather and shades and his customary designer stubble. A
EXTD=pilot single, 'I Want Your Sex' was banned by daytime radio stati
EXTD=ons and broke his string of number 1s in the UK. "FAITH" followed
EXTD=, and was not only well-received but sold in excess of 10 million
EXTD= copies. The album spawned a plethora of hit singles in the USA,
EXTD=including the title track, 'Father Figure', YEAR: 1987
