EXTD=immediately noticeable aspect of ...And Justice for All isn'tMeta
EXTD=llica's still-growing compositional sophistication or the apocaly
EXTD=ptic lyrical portrait of a society in decay. It'sthe weird,bone-d
EXTD=ry production. The guitars buzz thinly, the drums click more than
EXTD= pound, and Jason Newsted's bass is nearly inaudible. It'sa shame
EXTD= that the cold, flat sound obscures some of the sonic details, be
EXTD=cause ...And Justice for All is Metallica's most complex, ambitiou
EXTD=s work; every song is an expanded suite, with only two of the nin
EXTD=e tracks clocking in at under six minutes. It takes a while to si
EXTD=nk in, but given time, ...And Justice for All reveals some of Met
EXTD=allica's best material. Italso reveals the band's determination t
EXTD=o pull out all the compositional stops, throwing in extra section
EXTD=s, odd-numbered time signatures, and dense webs of guitar arpeggi
EXTD=os and harmonized leads. At times, it seems like they're doing it
EXTD= simply becausethey can; parts of the album lack direction and pr
EXTD=obably should have been trimmed for momentum's sake. Pacing-wise,
EXTD= the album again loosely follows the blueprint of Ridethe Lightni
EXTD=ng, though not as closely as Master of Puppets. Thistime around,
EXTD=thefourth song -- once again a ballad with a thrashy chorus and o
EXTD=utro -- gave the band one of the unlikeliest Top 40singles in his
EXTD=tory; "One" was an instant metal classic, based onDalton Trumbo's
EXTD= antiwar novel Johnny Got His Gun and climaxing with a pulverizin
EXTD=g machine-gun imitation. As a whole, opinions on...And Justice fo
EXTD=r All remain somewhat divided: some think it's aslightly flawed m
EXTD=asterpiece and the pinnacle of Metallica's progressive years; oth
EXTD=ers see it as bloated and overambitious. Eitherinterpretation can
EXTD= be readily supported, but the band had clearly taken this direct
EXTD=ion as far as it could. The difficulty of reproducing these songs
EXTD= in concert eventually convinced Metallica that it was time for a
EXTD=n overhaul. -- Steve HueyAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEWRage Before Th

EXTD=Metallica returned with a vengeanceon AND JUSTICE FOR ALL. All th
