EXTD=eponymous debut artfully coalesced the sonic and stylistic elemen
EXTD=ts of the burgeoning new romantic movement they were soon to spea
EXTD=rhead: pumping synths, glossy production, and seemingly impossibl
EXTD=e haircuts. Ultra-smart singles like "Girls on Film" and "Planet
EXTD=Earth" became instant smash hits both in the U.K. and America, an
EXTD=d other fine pop gems such as "Anyone Out There" and "Careless Me
EXTD=mories" rounded out the album's stellar first side. Side two was
EXTD=a far more experimental and revealing affair, with primary songwr
EXTD=iter Nick Rhodes leading the band through atmospheric mood-pieces
EXTD= like "Night Boat," "Sound of Thunder," and the instrumental "Tel
EXTD= Aviv," all of which are particularly reminiscent of mid-era Roxy
EXTD= Music (clearly one of Duran's biggest influences). The band's gr
EXTD=oundbreaking music videos would do the rest, securing them a uniq
EXTD=ue standing as forerunners of the first MTV generation and cement
EXTD=ing their status as one of the decade's most successful pop music
EXTD= icons. [The band's first U.K. number one, the non-album single "

EXTD=s import from Holland which you are viewing which contains the 19
EXTD=83 rerelease plus the deleted 'To The Shore.'\n\nAny way you cut
EXTD=it, this is a fabulous album. My personal choice for track listin
EXTD=g would be the US Harvest release plus 'To The Shore' but you can
EXTD='t get this album that way, so oh well...\n\nDuran Duran's debut
EXTD=was a post-Disco/New Romantic tour-de-force. Simon LeBon's space
EXTD=meets the water's edge lyrics backed by the thumping rhythms and
EXTD=melodies and dissonant sonic effects created a mesh that was danc
EXTD=eable, moody and glamorous. This would have been a strong album i
EXTD=f it was their third or fourth, and claimed as a come uppance for
EXTD= most bands. As a debut it was almost written off as a one-off. B
EXTD=ut here we are twenty-two years later and the album is very stron
EXTD=g and still loads of fun.\n\nOne of the greatest qualities of the
EXTD= first album is it's true lack of any filler tracks. No matter wh
EXTD=at version you buy, every track is wonderful. The debut album is
EXTD=probably my favorite Duran Duran album, if not sharing that honor
EXTD= with Rio. The thing that sets the debut apart from Rio style-wis
EXTD=e is the overall mood of the debut. \n\nWhereas Rio is mostly war
EXTD=m in tone, Duran Duran [album title] is mostly cold. It creates a
EXTD= bit darker collection and that's something that really makes it
EXTD=standout. However, the first album was released not long after th
EXTD=e death of disco and remnants of that can be heard to a degree; R
EXTD=io does not have that quality.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nF
EXTD=eels pretty thin 20 years later, November 18, 2002\nReviewer: Mic
EXTD=hael Rawdon (Silicon Valley, CA USA)\nI picked this up as part of
EXTD= my own little 80s nostalgia kick and was rather disappointed in
EXTD=it. My recollection was that while Rio was a good album and the b
EXTD=and pretty much spiralled into irrelevance thereafter, their firs
EXTD=t album was the best of the bunch. I ended up feeling disappointe
EXTD=d with both the songwriting and the production work.\nThe two sin
EXTD=gles - "Girls on Film" and "Is There Something I Should Know?" -
EXTD=are the strongest tracks, both in their arrangements and the stre
EXTD=ngth of their sound. "Something" even manages to lift up out of t
EXTD=he dance-pop genre to be something a little inspiring. Beyond tha
EXTD=t, the album features the danceable "Planet Earth" and becomes po
EXTD=sitively dire from there.\n\nMake no mistake: This was a synth-po
EXTD=p band from the get-go. The occasional tasty guitar lick is usual
EXTD=ly buried under the uninspired synth work and vocals. The rhythm
EXTD=section is especially poor, feeling largely artificial even if it
EXTD='s not, and entirely pedestrian. The lyrics are often impenetrabl
EXTD=e, but then this wasn't uncommon at the time.\n\nOn the other han
EXTD=d, the two singles ARE genuinely good tracks, even if their sound
EXTD= does feel a little dated. (But then, have you listened to the Hu
EXTD=man League lately? Eeerg.)\n\nOverall, I'd say if you want to rec
EXTD=apture the spirit of Duran Duran, stick with Rio and give this on
EXTD=e a pass unless (like me) you really need a copy of "Is There Som
EXTD=ething I Should Know?" If you want to sample some better 80s synt
EXTD=h-pop, try either of Howard Jones' first two albums or the Men Wi
EXTD=thout Hats collection disc.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nA Ne
EXTD=w Romantic Classic, March 2, 2002\nReviewer: Jorje Chica (Anaheim
EXTD=, CA USA)\nDuran Duran's debut album was a landmark in British Ne
EXTD=w Romantic music. Like other New Romantics, Duran Duran fused ele
EXTD=ments of funk, disco, and a healthy dose of David Bowie/Brian Eno
EXTD= into their music. \nUnfortunately, the Capitol release in the U.
EXTD=S. featured the single "Is There Something I Should Know?" This s
EXTD=ong was NOT on the original UK release, or for that matter, on th
EXTD=e first US vinyl release. It was recorded later, probably after "
EXTD=Rio," and most likely added to the debut album to attract more ma
EXTD=instream fans. Definitely not the high point of their abilities.
EXTD=Another disappointment was the deletion of the Night Version of "
EXTD=Planet Earth," which, instead of "Girls on Film," was the origina
EXTD=l first track. This longer, more funk-based version of "Planet Ea
EXTD=rth" is great, but apparently didn't make the cut with the Americ
EXTD=an label. Later copies of the debut, including the CD, included t
EXTD=he edited version you will remember from the video. Luckily, "Pla
EXTD=net Earth" and other Night Versions are available on the "Essenti
EXTD=al Duran Duran" compilation.\n\nStill, "Duran Duran" is up there
EXTD=with ABC's "The Lexicon of Love" and Ultravox's "Vienna" as one o
EXTD=f the greatest New Romantic albums. It and "Rio" are probably the
EXTD= only Duran Duran albums the average fan needs in their collectio
EXTD=n. But the above-mentioned flak gets it four, instead of five sta
EXTD=rs.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nNew Romanticism was groovy!!
EXTD=!!!!!, November 23, 2001\nReviewer: Kevin Claussen "Mr. Pants" (S

EXTD=y Chic and Roxy Music, but still very original and groovy, baby.
EXTD=Andy Taylor's guitar playing is fantastic abd he was a major forc
EXTD=e in the Duran Duran sound until he left in 1986. Very atmospheri
EXTD=c songs here. I think they are all very good. Tel Aviv is a wierd
EXTD= discoe-sque instrumental that I always put on mix tapes for peop
EXTD=le. Careless Memeories still rocks my socks off. "Waiting for the
EXTD= Nightboat" has a great instrumental opener.\nThe album makes me
EXTD=nostalgic for a phase in britpop that was shortlived and artsy fa
EXTD=rtsy; New Romanticism. I doubt many people in the U.S. under the
EXTD=age of 25 know about it, but Duran Duran pulled it off the best c
EXTD=lothing wise. Don't believe me, just look at old pictures of Span
EXTD=deau Ballet from the same year!!!\n\nThe U.K. vinyl import of thi
EXTD=s album is essential, as it has "To the Shore" on it.\n\nLastly,
EXTD=the album packaging is great! They used the same graphic scheme f

EXTD=It's also nice to have the "proper" British titles for the songs

EXTD=AMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nOut of Left Field: A Phenomenon, Augu
EXTD=st 22, 2000\nReviewer: Raleigh (Raleigh, NC)\nAt a college radio
EXTD=station I once worked for, I found the original release of Duran
EXTD=Duran's debut. Somebody had written on the back, "More 10-watt ro
EXTD=ck from England. It'll never sell in the U.S."\nWhile Duran had n
EXTD=ot yet perfected their "sound" that was made trademark and multip
EXTD=latinum on "Rio" and "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" they debuted wi
EXTD=th one of the best new romantic-era albums that bettered contempo
EXTD=raries (Spandau Ballet comes to mind). \n\nThe over-long synth in
EXTD=tros to "Nightboat" and "Friends of Mine" seem a bit dated. But "
EXTD=Nightboat" still captures a dancehall nightmare tone. Yet the sim
EXTD=ple trade-off of the melody in "Planet Earth" between guitar and
EXTD=keyboard still sounds fresh. Who can resist "Bop bop bop-bop be-b
EXTD=op bop bop-bop?" And "Girls on Film" is still a taut pop song tha
EXTD=t manages to tease (without the video). \n\nCritics charged that
EXTD=after release "Girl on Film" and "Planet Earth" that Duran were o
EXTD=verly cautious with their first full album release. Listening to
EXTD="Waiting for the Sound of Thunder" and "Careless Memories," I ten
EXTD=d to agree. But Duran never again managed the unpretentious tone
EXTD=of "Anyone Out There?" or the haunting orchestral "Tel Aviv."\n\n
EXTD=The only problem with the re-release was including the bombastic
EXTD=but fun sing-a-long single "Is There Something I Should Know?" Du
EXTD=ran had hit the big time and this one of their best singles. It s
EXTD=ounds too confident with the rest of the album. As long as you sk

EXTD=ent remastered sound. No audio bonus tracks (Unless you count "To
EXTD= The Shore"). Lyrics present. This is the original UK version of
EXTD=Duran Durans' first album. It was an injustice that it never pick
EXTD=ed up in the USA at first. After "Hungry Like The Wolf" hit #3 an
EXTD=d "Rio" hit #14 in the US, Capitol/EMI realized it was time to tr
EXTD=y again with releasing this album in the States. They took off "T
EXTD=o The Shore" and added the then new recording "Is There Something
EXTD= I Should Know?" which went on to hit #4 on the US charts. Virtua
EXTD=lly every song here is a gem, Even the instrumental "Tel Aviv" ha
EXTD=s a catchy beat. This is prime choice material here, Grade "A" Du
EXTD=ran Duran. Not everyone will agree but I just can't call anything
EXTD= that they wrote themselves trash. Basically you are buying this

EXTD=ave not bought any recent D.D. comps) so maybe it's indiginous to

EXTD=n)\nDuran the first, April 23, 2005\nReviewer: Timothy Brough "au
EXTD=thor and music buff" (Springfield, PA United States)\nWhile it ce
EXTD=rtainly sets the stage for their exploits to come, the debut albu
EXTD=m by Duran Duran has dated itself rather tellingly. The highlight
EXTD=s remain the singles, "Planet Earth" and "Girls On Film." The alb
EXTD=um also contains "Careless Memories," which should have been a hi
EXTD=t. But the greater textures and more sophisticated songs came for
EXTD=th more on "Rio" than here. \n\n"Duran Duran" captures the kind o
EXTD=f delirious art school DIY ethos of the period. The band was obvi
EXTD=ously stewed in the likes of Roxy Music and David Bowie, but ther
EXTD=e is a lot of Ultravoxx in here, plus the club beats that these d
EXTD=isco boys loved to spend their nights with. The synthesizers domi
EXTD=nate, are rather simplistic sounding, and LeBon's vocals are stil
EXTD=l highly affected. And if it wasn't obvious that these guys were
EXTD=working through their art school pretensions, just listen to "Tel
EXTD= Aviv," an exercise in movie soundtrack making. \n\nThe debut DD
EXTD=remains a fine album, but you can get both highlights on the "Gre
EXTD=atest" disc. Also worth noting, as many others have: the first Am
EXTD=erican version of this album (on the Harvest Records label) had a
EXTD= club mix of "Planet Earth" leading it off. Then, after "Rio" too
EXTD=k off commercially, "To The Shore" was replaced by "Is There Some
EXTD=thing I Should Know" and the single mix of "Planet Earth" was swi
EXTD=tched with the club mix. That was the first US CD version. This v
EXTD=ersion represents the original UK release, though if you look har
EXTD=d enough, you will find a version that has both "To The Shore" an
EXTD=d "Is There Something I Should Know."\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER RE
EXTD=VIEW (Remastered CD Edition)\na very solid debut, August 28, 2004
EXTD=\nReviewer: J. Brady (PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC United States)\nFor the
EXTD=record, this is the THIRD version of DD's debut album. As origina
EXTD=lly released in 1981, it contained the re-recorded, extended club
EXTD= version of Planet Earth ( cheesy string arrangements and all), a
EXTD=nd the excellent, moody rocker To the Shore was inexplicably left
EXTD= off.( It still had the same cover, though, with the odd car and
EXTD=the silly New Romantic clothing the band then sported) When re-re
EXTD=leased in the spring of 1983, after Duran mania had swept the US,
EXTD= the far superior 7" single mix of Planet Earth was put back on,
EXTD=but To the Shore was still left off, in favour of their current h
EXTD=it Is There Something I Should Know? and the cover was changed. F
EXTD=INALLY , more than 20 years later, American fans get the original
EXTD= album as it was released in the UK, with all the tracks as they
EXTD=originally appeared. This is actually quite a good album. Better
EXTD=than their reputation as "teeny-bop" would leave one to believe.
EXTD=And Duran Duran were an actual self-contained BAND, playing their
EXTD= own instruments, writing their own ( rather good ) material. A m
EXTD=ore polished, assured and accomplished debut you are not likely t
EXTD=o find from this era. I actually still play this one pretty regul
EXTD=arly, along with Rio and Big Thing, as I think they are the band'
EXTD=s best, most consistant albums.\n\n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW (

EXTD=l CD!, August 6, 2003\nReviewer: Scott Davies (Ohio)\nWhen I saw
EXTD=that Duran's 1st album was being remastered I didn't think there
EXTD=would be a reason to re-buy it. That changed when I saw the the t
EXTD=rack listing was going to be the original UK sequence, which mean
EXTD=t this would be the 1st time the excellent song 'To the shore' wa
EXTD=s going to be released in the U.S. on this album. Having first pu
EXTD=rchased this album in 1982, just before the band broke in America
EXTD=, many fans don't realize the 1st issue included the 'Night versi
EXTD=on' of 'Planet Earth'. and excluded 'To the shore'. In 1983 the b
EXTD=and released 'Is there something I should know' as a single. This
EXTD= prompted the company to re-release the first album with the new
EXTD=single, which was VERY out of place with the other songs, and now
EXTD= also included the infinitely superior single version of 'Planet
EXTD=Earth'. Now with the album returned to it's original intended run
EXTD=ning order, how could I resist?! The album has held up well over
EXTD=time, and that includes the fact that there is a somewhat dated f
EXTD=eel to it. 'Planet Earth' will always be among my favorites of al
EXTD=l time, and holds very special memories. However, 'Girls on film'
EXTD= falls flat and comes across as juvenile. Outside of that the res
EXTD=t of the album is classic New Wave/New Romantic. The disappointme
EXTD=nt in the remastering comes from the fact that songs 7 and 8 have
EXTD= a noticeably lower fidelity to the other 7 songs. It's very obvi
EXTD=ous when comparing it to the original U.S. CD, which sounds bette
EXTD=r on those songs. Just another example of shabby, half hearted re
EXTD=mastering skills from someone that did it as a 'job' rather than
EXTD=out of passion. Still, it's great to have this classic released i
EXTD=n it's original form, and it may be the 1st time many hear 'To th
EXTD=e shore'. The band never did anything as good as this. Though alb
EXTD=ums #2 and #3 are worth owning, they don't measure up entirely to
EXTD= this wonderful timepiece. This should be one of the first purcha
