EXTD=Whipped Cream & Other Delights Rewhipped\nHerb Alpert & The Tijua
EXTD=na Brass\n2006 Shout! Factory LLC\n\nOriginally Released March 7,
EXTD= 2006\n\nAMG EXPERT REVIEW: Rewhipped amounts to a pseudo-additio
EXTD=n to the original Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass catalog. This a
EXTD=lbum of remixes by late-'90s and 2000-era DJs features new trumpe
EXTD=t solos by Herb Alpert on seven tracks. All the cuts here appeare
EXTD=d on the original 1965 release, Whipped Cream & Other Delights, t
EXTD=hough not in the same order. Before rolling your eyes, consider t
EXTD=his: the music on this set was regarded not only as hip, but as p
EXTD=rogressive jazz by many back in the day. Producer Anthony Marinel
EXTD=li supervised all the remixes on the project and contributes six
EXTD=of his own -- including the title track with the aid of the band
EXTD=Ozomatli performing with Alpert. Marinelli is also a composer and
EXTD= keyboard player who has composed soundtracks (Man from Elysian F
EXTD=ields, Time Code) and done session work with everyone from Michae
EXTD=l Jackson and James Brown to Giorgio Moroder, Lionel Richie, and
EXTD=Supertramp. Other remixes were done by Thievery Corporation, Moce
EXTD=an Worker, John King, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Camara Kambon, and
EXTD=DJ Foosh. Whatever trepidations one might have about Alpert parti
EXTD=cipating in the project, some of the best cuts on the set work be
EXTD=st because he's on them -- the title cut (Marinelli) "El Garbanzo
EXTD=" (M,M&W), and "Peanuts" (Marinelli) -- in part because Alpert's
EXTD=gotten a lot funkier in his old age. Other standouts include the
EXTD=ambient dub that is "Lemon Tree" by Thievery Corporation, John Ki
EXTD=ng's dub-jazz-exotica redo of "A Taste of Honey" (the original al
EXTD=bum's smash single), and Mocean Worker's fine rework of "Bittersw
EXTD=eet Samba" with killer berimbau samples grafted on. The only cut
EXTD=that really doesn't work is "Butterball," Although Alpert's solo
EXTD=is hip-cool, the song's added beats don't leave enough of the ori
EXTD=ginal to appreciate it -- this is a drag, since all the other tra
EXTD=cks keep the basic cut to achieve historic continuity. It's a sma
EXTD=ll complaint since it's the final selection here. Certainly the m
EXTD=usic on Rewhipped has a somewhat limited appeal, and it's hard to
EXTD= think of the folks who bought Whipped Cream when it was released
EXTD= being interested in it now, but who knows? Hardcore dance music
EXTD=fans will find this a curiosity piece at best, but that doesn't m
EXTD=ean it's without musical merit. In fact, ReWhipped has as much ae
EXTD=sthetic appeal as its predecessor because the music Alpert and hi
EXTD=s band made in '65 has aged so well. Judging by his contribution
EXTD=here, Alpert certainly has, too -- at 71, the cat is still swingi
EXTD=n'.  -- Thom Jurek\n\nAmazon.com Editorial Review\nAfter decof be
EXTD=ing staples at flea markets and yard sales across the continent,
EXTD=the LPs Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass made in the '60s have bee
EXTD=n reissued with their original verve undiminished and sounding re
EXTD=markably fresh. Taking things one step further is a new set of re
EXTD=mixes. Those putting their hands are the faders include John King
EXTD= of the Dust Brothers, Mocean Worker, and Medeski, Martin & Wood.
EXTD= Alpert himself was an active participant in this project, adding
EXTD= some new trumpet solos amidst the snaky grooves and incessant be
EXTD=ats. Not only will those familiar with the originals be dazzled b
EXTD=y their transformations, but anyone new to these erstwhile millio
EXTD=n sellers will fall right in with the rhythmic drive and melodic
EXTD=hooks. --David Greenberger \n\nAmazon.com Product Description\nTh

EXTD=r: Curmudgeon "grantc" (West Australia)\nPoor Herb. Someone must
EXTD=have convinced him he could earn a retirement lump sum and a litt

EXTD=yet another fizzed-up remix compilation that mostly detracts from
EXTD= the cheesy original. And let's be clear: the original was a huge
EXTD= mainstream success which never approached even the fringes of hi
EXTD=pness. The only track on Rewhipped which truly messes and transfo
EXTD=rms an original is Love Potion 9: the new version adds vocals to
EXTD=the original instrumental and actually manages to sound funky. \n

EXTD= REVIEW\nWhipped vs. Re-Whipped (track by track), April 19, 2006\n
EXTD=Reviewer: Stephen V. Funk (Chicago, IL)\nI suppose it was only a
EXTD=matter of time before the eternally hip music of Herb Alpert and
EXTD=the Tijuana Brass was subjected to the remix treatment. But thank
EXTD=fully, Re-Whipped is not just your average remix album... \n\nFir
EXTD=st of all, Herb Alpert himself actually lays down some new trumpe
EXTD=t solos on some of the remixed tracks. Also, the entire Whipped C
EXTD=ream & Other Delights album has been "re-whipped" by a variety of
EXTD= remixers (although the songs are in a different track order for
EXTD=some reason...) This gave me the unique opportunity to dig out my
EXTD= old vinyl LP of Whipped Cream and listen to all 12 tracks side-b
EXTD=y-side with the corresponding Re-Whipped CD remixes... \n\nThe al
EXTD=bum cover: The cover photo on the original Whipped Cream & Other
EXTD=Delights is really the only reason most people own or even know a
EXTD=bout this album, isn't it? It's a classic, an icon, a masterpiece
EXTD=. And -- it's a real girl, covered with real cream (shaving cream
EXTD= instead of whipped cream, but still...) Re-Whipped attempts to u
EXTD=pdate and perhaps even outdo the original -- BAD IDEA. There's mo
EXTD=re skin, less cream, and -- worst of all -- the whole thing looks
EXTD= computer generated. Winner: Whipped (by a knockout) \n\nA Taste
EXTD=of Honey: Ahh yes... nothing says "swingin' sixties" better than
EXTD="A Taste of Honey." Herb's rendition is pretty straightforward ex
EXTD=cept for that nice part where he takes the tempo way down and jus
EXTD=t wades in a sea of marimba for a few seconds... John King's remi
EXTD=x wisely retains and repeats this moment a few times, but otherwi
EXTD=se doesn't do much other than add some synths and a backbeat. Win
EXTD=ner: Whipped (by default) \n\nGreen Peppers: Smooth, baby... and
EXTD=short -- the original is only one and a half minutes long. Anthon
EXTD=y Marinelli's remix adds the obligatory big beat, some reggae rhy
EXTD=thms, and lots of echo. It's nice to hear Herb laying down a fres
EXTD=h solo, but the track goes on for nearly five minutes... and then
EXTD= just fades out. Too bad... Marinelli should have followed Herb's
EXTD= lead and kept it short and sweet. Winner: Whipped (by several la
EXTD=ps) \n\nTangerine: A real laid back, melodic affair on the origin
EXTD=al. DJ Foosh keeps it mellow, throws in quite a few processing ef
EXTD=fects and so forth. Quite nice, really. Winner: Re-Whipped (in a
EXTD=tie-breaker) \n\nBittersweet Samba: Um... not really -- Herb's or
EXTD=iginal is more like the soundtrack to every unbearably unfunny ma
EXTD=dcap slapstick routine you could ever imagine... however, it is m
EXTD=ercifully short. Mocean Worker doesn't have much to work with her
EXTD=e, but he does manage to superimpose an actual samba rhythm on it
EXTD= and, as an added bonus, he keeps it short too. Winner: Re-Whippe
EXTD=d (T.K.O.) \n\nLemon Tree: Ah, yes... the background music at eve
EXTD=ry Chi-Chi's restaurant in Purgatory... Thievery Corporation actu
EXTD=ally improves upon the original, though, transforming it into a g
EXTD=orgeous, dreamy Mexican flavored meditation... Winner: Re-Whipped
EXTD= (opponent threw in the towel) \n\nWhipped Cream: Middle of the r
EXTD=oad, soundtracky stuff -- but that funky little drum and bass fil
EXTD=l is sure cool. Marinelli delivers a phat beat, a new Alpert solo
EXTD=, and some background vocals, but somehow manages to leave out th
EXTD=e best part -- that killer drum and bass riff. Oops. Winner: Whip
EXTD=ped (judge's decision) \n\nLove Potion No. 9: A fun little cheesy
EXTD= pseudo-stripper music number in Herb's hands... and then it fade
EXTD=s out. Marinelli and Ozomatli (there's a tongue twister for you)
EXTD=manage to turn this tune into some kind of hip-hop/indie-pop hybr
EXTD=id, complete with radio-ready vocals by some guy named Asdru Sier
EXTD=ra. Kind of a mess, but you gotta admire the effort... still... W
EXTD=inner: Whipped (barely...) \n\nEl Garbanzo: A corny little fiesta
EXTD= ditty that goes on a little too long on the original album... Th
EXTD=e remix by Medeski, Martin & Wood seems to be trying a little too
EXTD= hard, but in the end it's a bit more fun to listen to, I guess.
EXTD=Winner: Re-Whipped (by a nose...) \n\nLadyfingers: A rather lovel
EXTD=y, loungey little no-frills ballad on the original, Camara Kambon
EXTD='s remix throws in a lot of extra bells and whistles while still
EXTD=sounding sort of pretty -- too bad the beat is just a little too
EXTD=intrusive... Winner: Whipped (by a field goal...) \n\nButterball:
EXTD= A boring and/or irritating little tune with a monotonous beat an
EXTD=d pseudo-New Orleans Jazz interludes made worse only by Marinelli
EXTD='s relentlessly dull, unimaginative and seemingly endless remix.
EXTD=Winner: Whipped (since it's shorter...) \n\nPeanuts: Direct from
EXTD=the Mexican Polka party of your worst nightmares comes "Peanuts".
EXTD=.. Marinelli manages to turn this into a pleasant if ignorable te
EXTD=chno confection with a nice new Alpert solo as an added bonus. Wi
EXTD=nner: Re-Whipped ("I give it a 10 for a good beat") \n\nLollipops
EXTD= and Roses: The ultimate "driving through Southern California wit
EXTD=h the top down" music to be sure... Marinelli unfortunately tries
EXTD= to turn it into a retro Stevie Wonder-ish synth-fest and drains
EXTD=all the fun out of it in the process. Winner: Whipped (no contest
EXTD=) \n\nOVERALL: You simply must own the original Whipped, for the
EXTD=cover art if nothing else (and preferably on LP -- don't worry, y
EXTD=ou can find several copies of it in every used record store in th
EXTD=e world.) Re-Whipped, while not essential, is certainly a cut abo
EXTD=ve most remix albums -- despite the terrible cover art. Might as
EXTD=well just give in and get 'em both... \n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REV

EXTD= Alpert has certainly always found a way to keep himself busy. He
EXTD='s a businessman, musician, producer, arranger, composer, painter
EXTD=, sculpter, philanthropist...I guess the list goes on and on. \nW
EXTD=hile fans of his Tijuana Brass work have been rejoicing over reis
EXTD=sues of some of the 60s back catalog, Alpert wasn't satisfied wit
EXTD=h just re-releasing old product. Along with the first batch of re
EXTD=issues came "Lost Treasures" containing previously unreleased TJB
EXTD= recordings. Now we get "Re-Whipped". Not exactly a remixed versi
EXTD=on of "Whipped Cream & Other Delights" and not exactly a mash-up
EXTD=but more of a re-recording with plenty of samples of the original
EXTD= tracks from that classic LP. \nLots of well known mixers and DJs
EXTD= are featured here, each bringing his own style to the table. Som
EXTD=e of these tracks work better than others and you'll have a defin
EXTD=ite opinion about which ones work best for your personal taste. \n
EXTD=When you think about it, this project is not really too surprisin
EXTD=g. Alpert has never been one to coast on his legend. The 1974 LP
EXTD="You Smile - The Song Begins" showed that he was always willing t
EXTD=o update his sound and stay current in the ever-changing musical
EXTD=landscape. He reinvented his sound again and again ("Rise", "Keep
EXTD= Your Eye On Me", "Colors") and keeps adding to his musical horiz
EXTD=on. \nThis is an adventurous undertaking and kudos to Alpert for
EXTD=doing it. \n\nAMAZON.COM CUSTOMER REVIEW\nWhy Mess With Perfectio
EXTD=n?, March 27, 2006\nReviewer: Robert J. Resetar (Tucson, AZ)\nHer
EXTD=b Alpert was one of the most "musical" producers of the 60's. Few
EXTD= realize just how "hip" he was. \n\nHe also had the exquisite goo

EXTD=h. \n\nBut from the mid-70's on...his music lost it's spirit. I k
EXTD=eep hoping it will return... but RE-WHIPPED is no exception. \n\n
EXTD=On a high note..his "trumpet playing" sounds better than ever. Bu

EXTD=brand new album. I had to listen hard to recognize the melodies b

EXTD= wonderful--a consumate jazz artist, unlike the trumpter I felt I
EXTD= had to be embarrassed to say I listened to. I wish the arrangers
EXTD= had him highlighted even more. Which points out that the remixer
EXTD=s seem to do their mixing and rearranging simply for the sake of
EXTD=showing off what they can do. To the point it often gets in the w
EXTD=ay. It's as if they listened too hard to the Verve Remixed series

EXTD= let Herb do his thing. Herb rates a solid 4 (maybe 5) stars but
