EXTD=Originally Released September 6, 1988AMG EXPERT REVIEW: The most immediat
EXTD=ely noticeable aspect of ...And Justice for All isn'tMetallica's still-gr
EXTD=owing compositional sophistication or the apocalyptic lyrical portrait of
EXTD= a society in decay. It'sthe weird,bone-dry production. The guitars buzz
EXTD=thinly, the drums click more than pound, and Jason Newsted's bass is near
EXTD=ly inaudible. It'sa shame that the cold, flat sound obscures some of the
EXTD=sonic details, because ...And Justice for All is Metallica's most complex
EXTD=,ambitious work; every song is an expanded suite, with only two of the ni
EXTD=ne tracks clocking in at under six minutes. It takes a while to sink in,
EXTD=but given time, ...And Justice for All reveals some of Metallica's best m
EXTD=aterial. Italso reveals the band's determination to pull out all the comp
EXTD=ositional stops, throwing in extra sections, odd-numbered time signatures
EXTD=, and dense webs of guitar arpeggios and harmonized leads. At times, it s
EXTD=eems like they're doing it simply becausethey can; parts of the album lac
EXTD=k direction and probably should have been trimmed for momentum's sake. Pa
EXTD=cing-wise, the album again loosely follows the blueprint of Ridethe Light
EXTD=ning, though not as closely as Master of Puppets. Thistime around, thefou
EXTD=rth song -- once again a ballad with a thrashy chorus and outro -- gave t
EXTD=he band one of the unlikeliest Top 40singles in history; "One" was an ins
EXTD=tant metal classic, based onDalton Trumbo's antiwar novel Johnny Got His
EXTD=Gun and climaxing with a pulverizing machine-gun imitation. As a whole, o
EXTD=pinions on...And Justice for All remain somewhat divided: some think it's
EXTD= aslightly flawed masterpiece and the pinnacle of Metallica's progressive
EXTD= years; others see it as bloated and overambitious. Eitherinterpretation
EXTD=can be readily supported, but the band had clearly taken this direction a
EXTD=s far as it could. The difficulty of reproducing these songs in concert e
EXTD=ventually convinced Metallica that it was time for an overhaul. -- Steve

EXTD=ull of seething vocals and complex chord and tempo changes, with melody a
