EXTD=G EXPERT REVIEW: Led Zeppelin returned from a nearly two year hia
EXTD=tus in 1975 with the double-album Physical Graffiti, their most s
EXTD=prawling and ambitious work. Where Led Zeppelin IV and Houses of
EXTD=the Holy integrated the influences on eachsong, the majority of t
EXTD=he songs on Physical Graffiti are individual stylistic workouts.
EXTD=The highlights are when Zeppelin incorporate influences together
EXTD=and stertch out into new stylistic territory, most notablyon the
EXTD=tense, Eastern-influenced "Kashmir." "Trampled Underfoot," withJo
EXTD=hn Paul Jones' galloping keyboard, is their best funk-metal worko
EXTD=ut,while "Houses of the Holy" is their best attempt at pop, while
EXTD= "Down Bythe Seaside" is the closest they've come to country. Eve
EXTD=n the heavierblues -- the 11-minute "In My Time of Dying," the ti
EXTD=ghtly-wound "Custard Pie," and the monsterous epic "The Rover" --
EXTD= are louder, more extended and textured than their previous work.
EXTD= Also, all of the heavy songs are on the first record, leaving th
EXTD=e rest ofthe album to explore more adventerous territory, whether
EXTD= it's acoustic tracks or grandiose but quiet epics like the affec
EXTD=ting "Ten Years Gone." The second half of Physical Graffiti feels
EXTD= like the group is cleaning the vaults out, issuing every little
EXTD=scrap of music they set to tape in the past few years. Thatmeans
EXTD=that the album is filled with songs that aren't quite filler, but
EXTD=they don't quite match the peaks of the album, either. Still, eve
EXTD=n these songs have their merits -- "Sick Again" is the meanest, m
EXTD=ost decadent rocker they ever recorded and the folky acoustic roc
EXTD=k & roll of "Boogie with Stu" and "Black Country Woman" may be to
EXTD=ssed off, but they havea relaxed, off-hand charm that Zeppelin ne
EXTD=ver matched. It takes a while to sort out all of the music on the
EXTD= album, but Physical Graffiti captures the whole experience of Le
EXTD=d Zeppelin at the top of their game better than any of their othe
EXTD=r albums. -- Stephen Thomas Erlewine \n \nRoyHarper  -  Photograp
